TechNews - Windows 7 Momentum Grows - tech|
| (hx) 08:33 PM CEST - Apr,05 2015 |
- These are all the Steam Machines coming in 2015 - The
biggest news? That Steam Machines will start arriving this fall.
- Samsung Announces Pricing, Availability For New Line Of Curved
Monitors - Just weeks after Samsung introduced five new curved
monitors to the
international crowd, Samsung Electronics America revealed this week
that four of those panels will be heading to North America in May 2015.
These include the 31.5-inch SE590C Series, the 27-inch SE591C Series
and the SE510C Series, which arrives in 23.6-inch and 27-inch flavors.
For starters, the SE590C series monitor is the only one in the batch
with a 3000R curvature; all of the others sport a curvature of 4000R.
All of these monitors have a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a response time
of 4 ms, a refresh rate of 60 Hz and support for 16.7 million colors.
Other similar traits include a 16:9 aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing
angles, HDMI input and a headphone jack.
- Early Benchmarks Put Retina MacBook CPU Performance - According
to MacRumors,
the new benchmarks put the 2015 MacBook on par in terms of sheer
numbers with a 2011 i7 MacBook Air. But, the true power of the new
Intel chip cannot be determined solely by the GeekBench benchmarking
tool because it does not measure the graphics capability of the new
chip. In order to judge the true performance of the new MacBook, a more
comprehensive test will have to be performed that tests the GPU and
improved SSD. Apple offers two additional processor upgrade options for
the Retina MacBook, at 1.2GHz in the higher-end machine and at 1.3GHz
as an optional build-to-order upgrade, both of which will see somewhat
better performance results than the entry-level 1.1GHz processor. The
new Retina MacBook, which is Apple's thinnest and lightest notebook to
date, will go on sale on April 10. Prices start at $1,299 for the
1.1GHz/8GB/256GB model and $1,599 for the 1.2GHz/8GB/512GB model.
- Microsoft stops producing Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, will
focus on Kinect for Xbox One and Windows apps - Microsoft stopped producing the Kinect for Windows v2
sensor after phasing out the original sensor not long ago. The
company
emphasized, however, that this does not mean it will stop supporting
developers who want to build Windows apps that use the device.
- PiKasa Will Turn Your Raspberry Pi into a Laptop - The ultimate
housing for your Raspberry Pi, with a 7" (800x480) LCD, keyboard,
power supply,USB hub, speakers and battery charger - all inside a
fantastic looking housing. From Pi to Appliance in 3 minutes !
- Windows 7 Momentum Grows, Shows No Sign of Slowing - Windows 7 is following in the footsteps of its older cousin,
Windows XP, in its expected resilience and user loyalty all the way
until its inevitable end of support life in 2020. It is conceivable
that Windows 7 could co-exist with Windows 10 and even garner a full
quarter of user share in the process.
- Windows XP Still No. 2 Operating System - Net
Applications gave XP a 16.9 percent share for the month of March, a
hefty drop from the 19.1 percent recorded in February. Though XP's grip
on the market continues to loosen, it remains the No. 2 most-used
operating system based on Net Application's Web stats, beating Windows
8 and 8.1 and their collective share of 14 percent. Windows 8.1 took
the third spot with a 10.5 percent share, leaving Windows 8 in fifth
place with just 3.5 percent. It will be interesting to see how well
Windows 10 does once it hits the market. Especially considering it will
be free for Windows 7 - 8.1 users for the first year.
- Microsoft says that open sourcing Windows is "definitely
possible" - Microsoft has changed a great deal over the years -
from launching its own devices to its new cross-platform strategy of
making its software as widely available as possible. But if you were in
any doubt of the company's changing attitudes, consider the comments
made by its Technical Fellow, Mark Russinovich. In an interview
published today by WIRED,
Russinovich said that open sourcing its Windows operating system is
"definitely possible". Indeed, he added that Microsoft has already
discussed and considered the possibility: "Every conversation you can
imagine about what [we] should do with our software - open versus
non-open versus services - has happened."
- Learn How to Hack an App Video Series - Would you like to
learn how mobile apps are getting attacked and what you can do about
it? Jonathan
Carter from Arxan shows real life examples of tools and approaches
readily available in the market to hack into a mobile application.
- Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge revealed to be just as easily bendable
- How
bad is it? Pretty bad, according to a San Francisco-based extended
warranty service provider that took the matter so seriously it
conceived a 'BendBot'. Exactly, a robot whose sole purpose in life is
to test the fortitude of various gadgets while under pressure.
- LG Shows Off the G4's QHD Display - LG
Display today revealed a new screen for smartphones that stretches
5.5 inches across the diagonal and boasts quad HD (2,560 x 1,440)
resolution. According to LG, the new panel uses in-cell touch
technology to reduce thickness while maintaining excellent sensitivity.
It can be used when wet, for example. LG also says the LCD panel offers
50% higher contrast and is 30% brighter than its previous screens,
while not requiring any more power. Combined, LG says these two
elements help improve outdoor viewability. LG plans to use the panel in
and upcoming flagship smartphone, which is likely the successor to last
year's G3.
- Here's how to run Android apps on your PC or Mac - The
first thing you will need is a version of the Chrome browser which is over 40
and the ARC
Chrome app. Once the app has been added to the app launcher within
Chrome, an Android app's APK needs to be found. A simple Google search
will yield results. Once downloaded, open the ARC app and find the .apk
file which has been downloaded and open it. The ARC app will give
various settings - which orientation the screen should be and so on -
and once you are happy with those, simply click "Launch App" and the
app will start. The software is only in beta, so don't expect perfect
service, but the apps that I loaded worked well and Google is going to
be frequently updating ARC in order to add new features.
- Google Adds Master Inbox View to Gmail for Android - Google
today updated its Gmail application for Android devices with the
ability to see all emails from various accounts in a single, master
inbox. Using the new "All Inboxes" option will lump together emails
from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and IMAP/POP accounts into a single view.
This way users can respond to emails from all their accounts without
having to switch inboxes. Further, Google will automatically thread
email conversations from non-Gmail addresses to help users keep their
inbox under control. Other new features include improved auto-complete
when using the search box, more responsive animations, larger
attachment previews, and the ability to save to Drive with a single
tap. The new version of Gmail for Android devices is available from the
Google Play Store.
- Sling TV will add HBO content - Although it was thought
that Apple would have exclusive access to HBO content, it looks like Sling
TV will also offer HBO content in the near future. While an exact
date has not been announced, Sling TV ensures that it will have HBO
content on its service in time to watch the April 12th season premiere
of Game of Thrones. This will be excellent news to some, knowing that
they will not be required to purchase an Apple TV in order to subscribe
to HBO service.
Naturally, Sling TV subscribers will have the same type of access to
HBO's content as those subscribed to HBO GO. Along with acclaimed
series like True Detective and The Wire, subscribers will also have
access to movies like the Fast & Furious 6 and The Lego Movie. You
will still be required to sign up for Sling's basic service which is
priced at $20 USD a month. HBO access will be an additional $15 on top
of that. Currently, Sling TV can be viewed on a variety of streaming
boxes and the Xbox One.

- The startup CEO who stole $765k from his friends - Dressed
in matching yellow scrubs from the nearby Alameda County Jail, Jon
Mills looked resigned to his fate. After taking a plea deal on two
felony counts of wire fraud, the young former startup CEO appeared in
federal court Tuesday afternoon for sentencing. Mills had moved to
California five years ago with a dream to hit it big in Silicon Valley.
The company he founded, Motionloft, uses small sensors to perform
analytics on in-store foot traffic. Everything worked. The company
continues to succeed, and celebrity venture capitalist Mark Cuban
remains its sole investor.
But that success wasn't enough. In early 2013, Mills
told at least five people that if they gave him relatively small
amounts of money, they would own stakes in the company. He claimed
that a Cisco acquisition worth hundreds of millions of dollars was
supposedly imminent, so Mills and all Motionloft shareholders others
would stand to make a tidy profit. In reality, Mills knew the deal
didn't exist.
- Record-Shattering, All-Electric 1968 Mustang - The Zombie

people's keystrokes as they type can reveal a great deal of
information about the state of their motor function. Using the
researchers' algorithm for analyzing keystroke patterns could lead to
the diagnosis of diseases that impair motor function, such as
Parkinson's disease, much earlier than is now possible.

Wrong.

Give me my 27inch 16:10 and I'll get one.

PC computing power is doubled every year. That's four years, so it's 2^4, meaning it should be 32x faster, lol
This is so Apple.

No surprises here.
quote: Windows XP Still No. 2 Operating System
No surprises here, either.
I don't know why MS was thinking cutting patches would force people buy into WinDOS 8.

And it's closed source. So what does it matter what Russinovich is ranting about?

Not really. You both got the content and the basis of moore's law wrong:
quote:
The complexity for minimum component costs has increased at a rate of roughly a factor of two per year. Certainly over the short term this rate can be expected to continue, if not to increase. Over the longer term, the rate of increase is a bit more uncertain, although there is no reason to believe it will not remain nearly constant for at least 10 years.
[emphasis added]
G. Moore, 1965
The density of IC's double every 24 months. That doesn't in any way mean double the processing power every year.
The macbook is also a lot less square inches of integrated circuits, so it's fine that the benchmark places them equal. the main board looks a bit like a raspberry pi in size.
| El_Coyote | (10:19 AM CEST - Apr,06 2015 ) | | seems there are some sort of posting issue with the forums at the moment. | |

Wrong.
If this is regard to Steambox. I think you are wrong. Not saying Steambox in particular but a PC attached to your TV, yes. I've been doing it for years and people are catching on right now.
| Tom | (10:02 PM CEST - Apr,08 2015 ) | | Steambox is dumb, I forfeit all my previous support. Pay that much for a cutdown PC with probably crap parts?! Right. I suspect it won't do very well when released. | |
