TechNews - Microsoft Introduces $40 TV Tuner - tech|
| (hx) 02:49 PM CEST - Aug,09 2014 |
- Best Graphics Cards For The Money: August 2014 - August gives you price reductions across the Radeon
and GeForce line-ups. THG also take a close look at AMD's Mantle
graphics API, test PowerColor's new dual Radeon R9 290X and AMD's
FirePro W8100, and talk about Nvidia's upcoming Maxwell-based cards.
- TechSpot PC Buying Guide: Mid-2014 Update - The
TechSpot PC Buying Guide offers an in-depth list of today's best
desktop PC hardware, spanning four unique yet typical budgets. Get all
your PC part recommendations here
- Alienware to introduce new slim line of gaming laptops - The company
has confirmed that it is working on a new line of slimmer gaming
laptops, the Alienware 13 line. The laptop is fueled by
an Nvidia GTX 860M GPU, up to 16GB DDR3 memory, and the
latest Intel CPU, which will eventually be upgraded to the
next-generation Broadwell processors, but not at launch.
- WD Red Pro Review: 4 TB Drives for NAS Systems Benchmarked -
Finally we have the WD Red Pro, which aims to strike a balance between
performance, power consumption and price. The attractive pricing (given
the warranty) makes up for the fact that it doesn't impress in any
particular category compared to the competition. If Seagate's
Enterprise Capacity drive were to retail for the same price as that of
the Red Pro, the choice would be a no-brainer in favour of the Seagate
unit. But right now that is not the case, and Western Digital continues to present a unique value
proposition with the Red Pro lineup.
- Microsoft Introduces $40 TV Tuner for Xbox One in Europe
- Microsoft is planning to release a digital TV tuner
adapter to allow
European Xbox One owners to turn their consoles into a TV set-top box.
Launching in October in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK, the
29.99 EUR ($40) accessory will plug into a USB port to pick up channels
using free-to-air DVB-T, DVB-T2, and DVB-C television standards. This
will enable the TV functionality on Xbox One alongside TV listings from
OneGuide and a pause live TV option without the need for a separate
set-top box and IR blasting through Kinect. Although pausing live TV
will undoubtedly use part of the 500GB of hard
drive storage on the Xbox One temporarily, Microsoft has not committed
to providing DVR functionality with its digital TV tuner to schedule
and record programs. It's possible Microsoft may choose to enable DVR
functionality in a future update. Microsoft's Xbox One Digital TV Tuner
accessory is similar to Sony's PlayTV device for the PlayStation 3.
PlayTV allowed the PS3 to act as a digital TV tuner and DVR, but Sony
has not yet revealed a similar device for the PlayStation 4.
- Windows Threshold preview said to be on track for fall release
- Microsoft is polishing up Windows Threshold and so far this
week, Neowin
has revealed that virtual desktops will be coming to the updated
Windows OS and that the Charms bar will be getting overhauled as well.
While there has not been a single leaked build of the OS (yet), it does
look like the plans to release a preview of the OS later this year are
still on track. Mary Jo Foley, who reiterated and confirmed
this scoop about the virtual desktops, also reports that her sources
have indicated that a fall public preview for Threshold is still on
track for release. If true, that means that Microsoft is quickly moving
towards a stable release of the OS and we will likely hear more about
other new features in the very near future. Microsoft is pushing
aggressively ahead of Windows Threshold as it knows that to get
consumers to upgrade from Windows 7 or even XP, it needs to bring back
the Start menu. While most of you who have jumped to Windows 8 have
easily adapted to the new setup, consumers (and the enterprise) in the
wider market have spoken and they want the Start menu back before they
think about upgrading.
- CryptoLocker victims are able to decrypt their files for free
- CryptoLocker would encrypt the files on the victim's storage
using AES-256 bit encryption and demand about $300 in bitcoin in order
to retrieve the decryption key. If the victim didn't pay within a
specified time, then the victim's files would remain encrypted forever.
Well, until a couple of days ago, at least.
Computer security experts and researchers from the firms Fox-IT and
FireEye have collaborated to reverse engineer the CryptoLocker software
in a project they called "Operation Tovar." The collaboration between
the two has led to the identification of many of the private keys used
by CryptoLocker, and they have subsequently developed a free decryption
assistance website and tool to help victims of the ransomware
retrieve their data at no cost. The site requires the user to upload
any file that has been affected by the ransomware (they specify that
they will not store or view the file), and the tool will email the user
the relevant private key that can be used for decryption. At that point
the user must download a specific tool, enter the private key and the
location of the encrypted file, and the tool will decrypt the encrypted
file
- Justin.tv Shuts Down - Justin.tv has shut its doors for good
today. Visitors to either the main Justin.tv site or any of its
subchannels are now redirected to a goodbye message announcing that
"the Justin.tv website, mobile apps, and APIs are no longer in
service." Following that announcement is a Q&A about the closure,
and the first question - "Why?" - dances around the answer. The FAQ
indirectly blames the popularity of Twitch: "Unfortunately that means
we need to shut down Justin.tv." Such an answer only fuels recent
rumors and reports that have all but confirmed that YouTube will soon
acquire Twitch for $2 billion. Should that happen, today's news hints
at Twitch's services remaining largely unchanged, as Justin.tv users
are advised to transfer their account to Twitch by September 5, 2014.
(Paid Justin.tv users have already had their accounts converted to
similar services on Twitch.) As of press time, Justin.tv's main blog
had not been updated to reflect this news; its last post, dated May 29,
was an announcement that its live-video archives would be deleted on
June 15.
- Apple iPhone 6 Release Update - According to a
source of MacRumors,
the Apple iPhone 6 will be released on the 14th of October. Apparently
that Tuesday will be an "immense" day for Apple and the month of
October will be a busy one for the company. The month, of course,
should be a busy one if they are indeed going to release the much
anticipated next-gen iPhone on the above said date. And maybe Apple
will also show off the iWatch, OS X Yosemite, new iPads, and new Macs
in October, as rumored earlier. The company reportedly is also planning
a media event for September 16. According to a report which came out
last week, the company has plans for an event scheduled to happen in
mid-September for showing off the iPhone 6 and iOS 8. But there are no
hints about whether both the upcoming iPhones, the 4.7 and 5.5 inch
models, will be released on the same date. Several rumors have pointed
towards a delayed release, in late December or 2015, for the larger
model due to production issues.
- T-Mobile and MetroPCS Score Waterproof Kyocera Hydro Life -
-Mobile and MetroPCS have announced

smartphone. Like many of Kyocera's handsets, the Hydro Life is for
customers who need a robust phone that can survive the trials and
tribulations of an active lifestyle. It is certified to mil-spec 810G

Kyocera says has a non-slip finish. The Hydro Life is powered by a

Wi-Fi and T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling service, as well as Bluetooth 4.0,
and T-Mobile's HSPA+ network. The Kyocera Hydro Life runs Android 4.3.
It will be available to T-Mobile customers at Walmart stores beginning
August 8 for $125. It will reach MetroPCS stores on August 29.
- Timex Debuts Smartwatch with Mirasol Display - Timex
recently unveiled the Ironman One GPS+, a
connected watch for athletes. The stand-out feature of the One GPS+ is
its touch display. Timex selected Qualcomm's Mirasol technology, which
offers an always-on experience, high outdoor visibility, and low power
consumption all at the same time. Qualcomm uses Mirasol technology in
its own Toq smartwatch. The Timex One GPS+ comes with a free year of
AT&T cellular service and can be used to send text messages without
requiring a cellphone. The majority of today's smartwatches lack
stand-alone cellular connections and messaging capabilities. The One
GPS+ also supports Bluetooth and GPS for live location tracking;
includes an on-board music player; and is water resistant up to 50
meters. The Timex Ironman One GPS+ costs $399 and can be preordered via
Timex's web site.

- Hacker demonstrates how to remotely unlock a car in minutes -

- 4chan screenshot sells for $90K on eBay - If you ask 10
different people, "What is art?", chances are you'll get 10 different
answers. To 17 bidders on eBay, the answer this week would be a
screenshot of a 4chan post. Opening at a minimum bid of $500 and
finishing just four days later on 1 August
at $90,900, the screenshot -- named "Artwork by Anonymous" -- is an
anonymous post on the board pondering the diminished nature of art --
once something "to cherish", now reduced to a post on 4chan.

abs in your mouth? Do you also probably want to hurt your teeth a
lot and look like an idiot while doing it? If you answered yes, you're
the only person on Earth who could possibly want the Facial Fitness Pao.
- Magnetic Hair - MIT engineers have fabricated a new
elastic material coated with microscopic, hairlike structures that
tilt in response to a magnetic field. Depending on the field's
orientation, the microhairs can tilt to form a path through which fluid
can flow; the material can even direct water upward, against gravity.
- Veritasium Shows You Five Cool Physics Phenomena - You can try
most of these out right now, but we're not responsible for anything

- China bans Apple devices from government over 'security
concerns' - Apple is the latest foreign tech company to fall foul
of new procurement guidelines for China's government, as the country
continues to reduce its dependence on hardware and software from
international firms. The government has now
excluded Apple from a list of approved companies from which devices
can be purchased for government use, due to vaguely defined 'security
concerns'. Government officials, speaking with Bloomberg on condition
of anonymity, said that ten Apple products - including iPads and
MacBooks - had previously been on the list drafted in June, but were
dropped when it was formally approved in July. Apple joins a range of
other firms whose products can no longer be bought with public money in
China. In May, the Chinese government banned Windows 8 from its
procurement list, and indicated that it was looking at alternatives to
IBM servers in its banking sector, to prevent international
surveillance. This week, China also barred Symantec and Kaspersky from
providing software to government bodies.

- This astrophotography video is absolutely mesmerizing - Photographer
Gavin Heffernan recently spent some time capturing
the landscape surrounding Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks in
California. Instead of focusing on just the trees and the
mountains, however, Heffernan put an emphasis on the sky to create the
beautiful video you see above. Heffernan spent three days during the
summer solstice capturing material for the film. Most night shots were
taken with 25-second exposures on two Canon EOS 6D's using multiple
wide, fast lenses. My favorite part of the clip is the star trails
which were created using a rendering program called Starstax. There's
just something mesmerizing about seeing the Earth rotate in such a
manner.

- This Is The Worst Pain A Human Can Experience - This

of bullet ants. The ants generate the worst pain a human is capable
of experiencing and the sensation goes on and on and on.
- Ethan Swanson Doing The Epic Roof Jump (Video) - If you have
a GoPro camera, you probably have attempted some bizarre stunts
just for fun and for the thrill of seeing a few thousands of clicks on
YouTube. But you most likely have never done something similar to what
Ethan Swanson is doing in the video below, unless you are a
professional stuntman like him. The daredevil in Swanson one day
decided to jump off of a building, slide down a steep roof and then
land on the stairs. The video seems to be appropriately named as "Epic
Roof Jump". Check it out and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
And you probably better leave insane stunts to the pros or, in the
usual words, don't do this at home!!
