- Microsoft Makes Office Free for iPhone and Android Phones - Microsoft
today updated Office
for the iPhone and Android smartphones and made the application
suite free for home users. Previously, the app required a subscription
to Office 365, which carried a monthly fee. iPhone and Android
smartphone owners can now open, edit, and create Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint files on their smartphone for no charge. Business users will
still need to subscribe to Office 365 in order to access Office on
their smartphone. The change comes just after Microsoft announced
Office for the Apple iPad. Office for the iPad is free to download, but
is limited to read-only unless iPad owners subscribe to Office 365.

and Apple's CEOs were congratulating each other Thursday, via Twitter,
on the launch of Office for iPad, and now we know why Apple's leader
Tim Cook might be very happy Microsoft brought Word, Excel and
PowerPoint to their tens of millions of tablets. Re/code has confirmed
with Apple
that they will get a 30 percent cut of any revenues generated from
Office 365 subscriptions if they are made within the iPad apps.
Considering that there may be a lot of iPad owners who have yet to sign
up for Office 365, that could represent not just a new revenue stream
for Microsoft but also a significant boost for Apple's bottom line as
well. Of course, people who already have Office 365 subscriptions, like
the 3.5 million people who already signed up for the Home Premium
version, won't see any of their money going to Apple.

new iOS app called FireChat is blowing up in the App Store. But
it's not the app itself that's causing such a stir, it's the underlying
networking technology it taps into. The idea behind FireChat is simple.
It's a chatting app. After registering with a name - no email address
or other personal identifiers required - you're dropped into a
fast-moving chatroom of “Everyone” using it in your country. The
interesting aspect, however, is the "Nearby" option. Here, the app uses
Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework, essentially a peer-to-peer
feature that lets you share messages (and soon photos) with other app
users nearby, regardless of whether you have an actual Wi-Fi or
cellular connection. You read that correctly. You're able to send and
receive messages even when you don't have a data connection. FireChat
accomplishes this magic by allowing each device to connect directly to
others nearby using Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, or traditional Wi-Fi
networks. Because you're connecting directly with other users, you
don't actually need to be connected over Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
