TechNews - Windows 8.1 Update Tries To Win Back - tech|

- Intel's 800Gbps cables headed to cloud data centers - Intel
and several of its partners said they
will make 800Gbps cables available in the second half of this year,
bringing big speed increases to supercomputers and data centers. The
new cables are based on Intel's Silicon Photonics technology that
pushes 25Gbps across each fiber. Last year, Intel demonstrated speeds
of 100Gbps in each direction, using eight fibers. A new connector that
goes by the name "MXC" holds up to 64 fibers (32 for transmitting and
32 for receiving), enabling a jump to 800Gbps in one direction and
800Gbps in the other, or an aggregate of "1.6Tbps" as Intel prefers to
call it. (In case you're wondering, MXC is not an acronym for
anything.)
- Build Your Own:
Single-Slot GeForce GTX 750 Ti - How much performance might you sacrifice in the
process of dipping from
a dual- to single-slot cooler? That's probably the most important
question coming from HTPC and small form factor enthusiasts.
- Gigabyte Builds First Single-Socket LGA2011 Motherboard With
10 Gb/s Ethernet -The Gigabyte GA-6PXSVT is the world's first motherboard
with a single LGA 2011 socket to feature integrated 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Beyond this, the motherboard has support for up to Intel Xeon E5-2600
V2 CPUs, 256 GB of DDR3 ECC 1866 MHz memory (split over eight DIMMs),
along with ample storage options. Ample, in this case, means that the
board has a total of 10 SATA3 (6 Gb/s) ports, along with another four
SATA2 (3 Gb/s) ports. It also features three PCI-Express x16 ports.
- Ghetto Crypto-Currency Mining Rigs - The
crew at ThinkComputers has posted an article today that showcases some
really ghetto crypto-currency mining rigs.
- Sony And Panasonic Announce The 1TB Archival Disc - Sony
Corporation and Panasonic today announced that they have
formulated "Archival Disc", a new standard for professional-use,
next-generation optical discs, with the objective of expanding the
market for long-term digital data storage. Optical discs have excellent
properties to protect themselves against the environment, such as
dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in
temperature and humidity when stored.
- Stephen Wolfram's Introduction to the Wolfram Language - Stephen
Wolfram introduces the
Wolfram Language in this video that shows how the symbolic programming
language enables powerful functional programming, querying of large
databases, flexible interactivity, easy deployment, and much, much more.
- Windows 8.1 Update Tries To Win Back Desktop Diehards - A
word of warning: If you're a Metro hater, this update will do almost nothing to make you feel
all warm and fuzzy. The Windows 7-style Start menu is not coming
back. This update sticks with the fundamental design principles of the
Windows 8 interface, and nothing in it comes close to restoring the
Windows 7 desktop interface. It is still the Windows 8.x interface,
evolved, with that evolution clearly driven by powerful negative
feedback.
- Apple Releases iOS 7.1 with Bug Fixes and New Features - Apple
has made iOS 7.1 available to iPhones, iPads, and iPods Touch. The
operating system update resolves a significant bug that soft reset iOS
devices when being used. iOS 7.1 also adds support for CarPlay, Apple's
recently-announced in-car software. The update tweaks the behavior of a
wide range of functions, such as the ability to control Siri manually
by pressing and holding the home button. Siri gains more
natural-sounding voices for Chinese, UK English, Australian English,
and Japanese. iTunes Radio was improved with new placement of the
search bar, and the ability to buy albums directly from the Now Playing
screen. The Calendar app gains the ability to display events in the
month view, as well as view country-specific holidays. Accessibility
has been improved with a bold font option, and the Reduce Motion
function now applies to more apps, including weather and messages. iOS
7.1 also adds new HDR camera tools, improves iCloud Keychain support,
automatically clears FaceTime calls, improves Touch ID on the iPhone
5s, improves performance of the iPhone 4, and provides other UI teaks.
iOS 7.1 is free to download from Apple.
- iPhone Air Concept 2014 - The design
by Sam Beckett rests upon the same principles that Apple's existing
devices use, such as flat metal sides that act as the antennae with
chamfered metal edges. The concept also boasts sapphire glass, an
enhancement which seems likely given Apple's recent investment in the
manufacture of the material. However the 1920x1080 resolution that
Beckett gives is unlikely to be included on a real device, as Apple
traditionally do their best to maintain aspect ratios in their device
upgrades; they are more likely to double the iPhone 5s' resolution, as
they did with the iPads with Retina Displays. An imaginary 10-megapixel
camera makes an appearance as well as the existing Touch ID sensor.
This comes within a device which, if ever made real, would be 9%
thinner than the current generation.
- Leaked video shows Wi-Fi Sense in Windows Phone 8.1 - The
brief clip on UnleashThePhones' YouTube channel shows how users
will be able to turn off Wi-Fi on their handset for a brief period
before it comes back on again automatically. Wi-Fi connections can
be stopped for one hour, four hours or one day in addition to the
regular manual selection. The other feature shown in the video is what
Microsoft is calling Wi-Fi Sense. If a user goes to a Wi-Fi hotspot
regularly, this feature will let them to save their login and password
information. This will enable them to login automatically the next time
the phone "senses" that the Wi-Fi hotspot is available. Finally, Wi-Fi
Sense includes a feature where users can actually share their hotspot
connection information with others via their Outlook.com, Skype and
Facebook contacts. So if a group of friends gather at the same hotspot,
one person can simply send that login and account info to their buddies
without the others having to type it in manually.
- Toyota FCV Concept - Geneva Motor Show 2014 - Heralding
the fuel cell vehicle Toyota plans to launch in 2015 as a pioneer in
the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles, the Toyota FCV Concept
makes its European debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

and liquor does the average person in each state drink per week? Wow, we
really need to cut back.

you think about it, cats are basically tiny raptors :-)
- Everything Wrong With The Worst 'Indiana Jones' Movie - He hates
snakes; we hate this stupid film.
- 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' Reboots Carl - "The cosmos
is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be. Come with me." With those
words in 1980 the astronomer Carl Sagan launched "Cosmos," an
epic 13-part TV series that brought science to the public like
never before, and opened up all of space and time to exploration. A
generation later, Sagan's legacy lives again in "Cosmos: A Spacetime
Odyssey," a 21st-century reboot premiering on Fox tonight (March 9).
The new "Cosmos" (the original was billed as "A Personal Journey")
updates its predecessor with a blend of spectacular visual effects and
the latest astronomical discoveries. 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' is a
21st-century reboot of astronomer Carl Sagan's iconic 1980 science
television series. The new 13-part series, hosted by astrophysicist
Neil deGrasse Tyson, begins March 9, 2014 on Fox.
Yet the all-new 13-episode series - hosted by astrophysicist Neil
deGrasse Tyson, a fitting successor to Sagan for reasons the first
episode makes clear - still stays true to the north star as Sagan's
original: to share the wonder of the universe and science with viewers
today. The people behind the new series think Sagan would be proud.

last 10 comments: | Apathy Curve | (02:51 PM CET - Mar,12 2014 ) | @Win8.1 update: Microsoft just don't get it, do they? I DO NOT WANT a tablet interface on my desktop computer. Period. No amount of tweaking, coaxing or cajoling is going to make me want it. Ever.
Just freakin' stop pushing your lame-ass app store in my face and produce a basic operating system. One that, you know, operates the system. That's it.
Greedy jerks. | |
| gx-x | (05:03 PM CET - Mar,12 2014 ) | "Leaked video shows Wi-Fi Sense in Windows Phone 8.1"
They did not have all that before? o.O Android and iOS have these features since like....forever...Androids puts wifi to sleep when device enters deep sleep, or you can tell it not to if you prefer constant updates to get every single tweet/spam...As for remembering user/pass for networks, wow, just...wow...What's next? mobile IE that supports bookmarks?
| spectra9 | (02:20 AM CET - Mar,13 2014 ) | | Metro looks like ugly even on the OS it was designed for. What was MS thinking when they design this thing  | |
| Kompressor | (04:15 AM CET - Mar,13 2014 ) | | This is a conspiracy. Microsoft is trying to get everyone to buy Apple computers and invoke a shitload of hardware sales. | |
| gx-x | (05:00 AM CET - Mar,13 2014 ) | I actually installed windows 8.1. It's terrible, it needs a lot of fixing and tweaking to get it to acceptable levels (most of those are minor things but very irritating, like, win8 takes your background picture and compresses it to 300KB and then it looks ugly, you need to convert wallpaper to PNG so windows wont compress it. Took me like 5 hours to figure this out (using google ofc))
I disabled appstore and changed nagging UAC to totally off because I couldn't even uncompress some archives if I don run WinRAR in exclusive mode (not all but some archives)...thats just a few things I personally had to change, there are more of course but to each his own. I made start button on keyboard shortcut to "Launchy" (a great little customizable indexing launcher that can replace windows search and most of the shell if you want to and like to type), as for start menu, luckily, I type fast so I can open/find things very fast via launchy, but anyone can if it's indexed... (you can choose to index just first 3 levels of depth of drives instead of every junk file like windows does).
anyway, I installed it (win 8.1) because some games run better. I was sceptical but they really do.
| spectra9 | (01:14 PM CET - Mar,13 2014 ) | I'm sticking to Win8 right now, because Win8.1 brings nothing worthwhile for me, most of the updates are Metro related, which I don't use. Not to mention that it's reported to conflict with the driver I used to flash my tablet.
Metro and UAC are the first things that I ditched when I installed Win8. I also install Start8 and thankfully, haven't needed to see any Metro abomination so far. I agree with the wallpaper compression issue, what an annoying one that is, how can MS mess something so simple like setting a wallpaper that's been working fine since Win95. When I see a cool picture, I always have to restrain myself from right clicking it and setting it as wallpaper because I don't want to mess with the procedure to fix it again.
I actually had come to a point where I uninstall Win8 and go back to Win7, only to find out that strangely, Chrome does not work properly via RDP on Win7. Starting Chrome in RDP will result in the Chrome instance in local machine to hang somehow. So, back to Win8 for now
| gx-x | (05:30 PM CET - Mar,13 2014 ) | 8.1 has some speed improvements, gaming vise :) Couldn't care less about metro... As for wallpapers, just save whatever you like and convert it to png with image editor/viewer of your choice and then set it as wallpaper.
The reasoning MS gave for atrocious compression is "it makes for a smoother desktop workflow experience" . While I do agree that setting a 2MB wallpaper on a 1GB memory tablet is not a very good idea, I am not using windows mobile and that approach should not be used on non-mobile versions or at least we should be presented with a choice.
