TechNews - Battle of the 4 TB NAS Drives - tech
(hx) 05:23 AM CEST - Sep,07 2013
  • Battle of the 4 TB NAS Drives: WD Red and Seagate NAS HDD Face-Off - Coming to the business end of the review, one must note that both Western Digital and Seagate have put forward convincing offerings for the 1-5 bay NAS market. While the Seagate unit manages to win most of the performance tests, it comes at the cost of an increase in power consumption. 1-5 bay NAS system users looking for top performance at lower price points might do well to take a look at the Seagate NAS HDD. On the other hand, if a cool-running system is the need of the hour and performance is not a major concern, the WD Red makes an excellent choice.
  • Alienware 17 Gaming Notebook Review - The baseline Alienware 17 enjoys an Intel Core i7-4700MQ with a nominal clock speed of 2.4GHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M, 8GB of DDR3L-1600, and 750GB of mechanical storage only; at $1,499 this model is cute but not really worth considering. Unfortunately configuring an Alienware isn't as flexible as it used to be, and as a result if you want any of the good stuff, you have to shell out for the $2,299 top base model and then upgrade that.
  • My Passport Slim First 2TB Thin Drive with Metal Case & HW - WD today announced the availability of its My Passport Slim line of portable hard drives, the first thin drives to offer up to 2 TB capacity, a metal enclosure, and 256-bit hardware-based encryption. The included WD SmartWare Pro data protection software allows users to back up their data to their My Passport Slim and keep an extra copy in their Dropbox account for peace-of-mind. The software also lets users back up their Dropbox1 account to the My Passport Slim. These features make the My Passport Slim an ideal choice for protecting, storing, and enjoying digital content on the go.
  • GALAXY at Computex 2013: World Record Breaking Overclocks - Recorded during Computex 2013 with guest overclockers HKEPC OC Lab from Hong Kong, renowned Japanese overclocker Duck San, and NP2Korea Pro OC from Korea. Several world records were set during the show using GALAXY's GeForce GTX 780 HOF (Hall of Fame) Edition.
  • HDMI 2.0 officially announced: 18Gbps bandwidth, 60fps 4K - Arriving just in time for the wide rollout of a new generation of Ultra HDTVs, it adds a few key capabilities to the connection standard. With a bandwidth capacity of up to 18Gbps, it has enough room to carry 3,840 x 2,160 resolution video at up to 60fps. It also has support for up to 32 audio channels, "dynamic auto lipsync" and additional CEC extensions. The connector itself is unchanged, which is good for backwards compatibility but may disappoint anyone hoping for something sturdier to support all of those suddenly-popular dongles. The cables won't change either, as the group claims current high-speed Category 2 wires can handle the increased bandwidth. Some companies have suggested upgrade paths for their UHDTVs already on the market -- hopefully we'll find out more about those plans this week at IFA 2013.
  • Android 4.4 Named 'KitKat'  - Google today announced that the next major version of Android - version 4.4 - will be named KitKat, after the Kit Kat candy bar made by Nestle. Each major version of Android is named for a sweet treat starting with a successive letter of the alphabet. Only major versions get a new name. So while version 4.0 was dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, versions 4.1-4.3 all shared the name Jelly Bean. Therefore version 4.4 is expected to bring more major changes compared to versions 4.2 and 4.3. Google has not announced any details of the new release, hinting only that it will "make an amazing Android experience available for everybody". Google and Nestlé have teamed up on a promo for the new software. Specially-marked Kit Kat bars will come with a code good for the chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet or Google Play store credit.
  • Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Is a Companion for Note 3 - Samsung today announced the Galaxy Gear, a smartwatch that serves as an accessory to smartphones such as the Galaxy Note 3. The Gear has a 1.63-inch touch screen, 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM, and uses Bluetooth 4.0LE to communicate with the Note 3. The Gear includes a 1.9-megapixel camera and a speakerphone, both of which are embedded in the wristband. The camera can record 720p HD video, and images and video are synced to the Note 3 for safekeeping. The Gear runs Android from Google, but uses a unique user interface from Samsung that permits users to swipe from screen to screen and from app to app. The Gear runs several native apps, such as pedometer and clock, and also interacts with the Note 3. When paired with a smartphone, it can be used to place phones, view rich notifications, and interact with Samsung's S Voice app. The Gear runs third-party apps as well, and will ship with several from the likes of eBay, Evernote, RunKeeper, TripIt, and others. The Galaxy Gear will go on sale after September 25, but pricing was not announced.
  • Samsung Note 3 Offers Bigger Screen, Smaller Footprint, Updated S - Samsung today announced the Galaxy Note 3, its third-generation phablet with S Pen stylus. The Note 3 increases the screen from last year's 5.5-inch display to 5.7 inches. It also improves the resolution from 1280 x 800 to 1920 x 1080 full HD. Despite the larger screen, the Note 3 is 1mm narrower and 1mm thinner than the Note 2, and also weighs significantly less thanks to the use of polycarbonate in the frame. Samsung also refreshed the design language, giving the Note 3 a faux leather texture to the back cover rather than the glossy plastics of the Note and Note 2. The Note 3 will come in two variants, an LTE version with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and an HSPA+ version with 1.9GHz eight-core Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor. Both will include 3GB of RAM
  • Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Gear - The display is fantastic. It measures 5.7 inches across the diagonal and uses Samsung's Super AMOLED technology. It is a full HD screen, which gives it 1920 x 1080 pixels. Colors pop off the screen and everything looks razor sharp. I honestly can't offer enough praise for the screen, it's that good. As with Samsung's higher end devices, there is a single physical button below the screen for accessing the Home screen. There are capacitive buttons on either side, left is Menu, right is Back. They worked just fine in our time with the device. The rest of the buttons are placed right where you expect to find them. The volume rocker is on the left and the screen lock button is on the right. Both have great profiles and feel very good to use. There's a clean satisfying click when they are pressed that I really like.
  • NSA Prefers Hacking Routers and Switches - The NSA runs a massive, full-time hacking operation targeting foreign systems, the latest leaks from Edward Snowden show. But unlike conventional cybercriminals, the agency is less interested in hacking PCs and Macs. Instead, America's spooks have their eyes on the internet routers and switches that form the basic infrastructure of the net, and are largely overlooked as security vulnerabilities.
  • Nymi Will Replace Your Passwords And Keys (Video) - Nymi has been designed to allow you access into your smartphone or tablet or computer without typing in any password, but the company thinks that the bracelet can be utilized to do much more. All you have to do is attach Nymi onto your wrist and press on the sensor on its top with your finger. You will know that the bracelet is active via LEDs and a vibration motor, which can also be utilized to get notifications from your handset. Nymi is coming with support for Bluetooth 4.0.
  • Oculus Rift Wanna-Be Uses Your Cell Phone - vrAse turns your Smartphone into the ultimate device for Movies, Games and Augmented Reality. Huge 3D screen, everywhere and hands free.
  • Amazon announces updated Kindle Paperwhite -  Amazon has announced an iterative update for their amazing Kindle Paperwhite ebook reader. The new Paperwhite comes with new display technology that gives even higher contrast, an updated backlight that Amazon says helps further reduce eye-strain, and a 25% faster processor that results in faster page-turns.
  • $7 BILLION: MS Buys Nokia With Change from Cushions, Elop Rumor - Microsoft has purchased Nokia's devices and services unit, bringing the Lumia lineup under the Redmond roof. The move unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, giving the company the integrated mobile offering it's been looking for with Surface and other devices. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay €3.79 billion for Nokia's business, plus another €1.65 billion for its portfolio of patents. (The €5.44-billion total is considerably less than Microsoft paid for Skype in 2011.) 32,000 people are expected to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft, including 18,300 that are "directly involved in manufacturing."

Whatever. I'm waiting for the WD Green drives.

That's a whole lot of data to lose at once. I don't think people would carry around that much...

So, what was wrong with DisplayPort?

Of course; PCs are easy to protect with custom software, the software package varies a lot, their address might change and they're are turned off quite often. Routers on the other hand are easy-peasy - always on, fixed address, relatively fix software with well-known backdoors, etc.
We always knew that US builds backdoors into everything produced in the US. I wonder how it'll affect global sales however; I guess they won't be selling too many routers to the Russians anymore...

Elop's an idiot, just like Ballmer. He could not renew Nokia, why do you think he is able to do anything different in MS? Or, is the goal to run MS to the ground? Why don't you keep Ballmer then? He's far better at that.

Now I know what this device is food for, thanks!
