Xbox One: Connectivity, Licensing (24h check-in) - console|
(hx) 12:55 PM CEST - Jun,08 2013 | Microsoft has posted a
series of articles (thanks Stumpus) detailing exactly the way that
the Xbox One will handle a permanent internet connection requirement,
how it allows users to trade and sell games and exactly how private
your Kinect will let your house be. Many of the most titillating and
specious rumors about how the Xbox One will handle these tricky
situations has been proved false with this post. Most of them except
the Internet connection requirement that is. That one is still going to
raise some eyebrows. The Xbox One will let you play your ‘home console'
for 24 hours without an internet connection, then will require that you
log on to continue playing. If you're logged on to someone else's
console, you'll have to check every hour. That's even for single player
games. Microsoft says that this internet connection will allow
developers to create "massive games in the cloud", which was one of the
big features touted at the launch event. This means that large sections
of some games may require a cloud connection to operate as planned. The
Xbox One will always be running in a "low power" state in order to
automatically download updates when you're away.
Here's what Microsoft says are the network requirements for the Xbox
One:
- A persistent connection is "not required", but one is if you want
to "verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see
if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your
game to a friend."
- 1.5MB internet connection is recommended
- You can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console,
or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your
library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times
until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV
and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.
Confusion arose after it appeared the company would impose a fee for
playing pre-owned games, a move that was highly unpopular with gamers.
The company has now said in a statement that games can be traded in,
but only at "participating retailers". Games can be freely passed on to
friends, Microsoft added, but only once. "Xbox One is designed so game
publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your
friends," the statement said. "There are no fees charged as part of
these transfers. "There are two requirements: you can only give them to
people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each
game can only be given once." |

tride | (05:23 PM CEST - Jun,08 2013 ) | So you have to "check-in" every 24hr. in order to play games ?
And if there is no internet connection where you take your console then just watch porn and movies...
Jesus, ill skip this generation too... obviously. And the console fanboys will eat this shit too... pity!
Let's see if Sony goes for the same shit too. I expect they will because what MS is doing is doing it in favor of the game dev's - more money for all.
If Sony dont offer them developers such "cloud shit control protection" theyll stop developing for PS i guess. But its a GO for all the indie companies. Let's see how smart Sony might get...

Sabot | (08:27 PM CEST - Jun,08 2013 ) | Koogle> Microsoft is a disgusting company and bill gates is a fucking criminal.
Exactly. Pure despotism. Though there is millions of morons that think M$ can't do a thing wrong. Remember, they fucked up pc gaming with buying out every major game dev for exclusives for their shit Eggbox. Yet these PC owners blame other console manufacturers that just happen to not even MAKE games for Windows piss, except for their own hardware.
People need a fucking brain transplant that support Eggbox and M$....
Apathy Curve | (10:29 PM CEST - Jun,08 2013 ) | Koogle> Microsoft is a disgusting company and bill gates is a fucking criminal.
To be fair, Gates is no longer associated with running the company, making product decisions, etc. What you're seeing with the Xbox One and last year with the Window 8 fiasco is the club-handed touching of the raging dickhead known as Steve Ballmer. The man is a screaming, ranting asshole and a perfect example of everything that's wrong with the CEO "good old boy" system in modern American business. He'll drive the company right into the ground if the shareholders don't have the sense to run him off.
Notice how Sony is being very, very quiet. They are following the old military axiom: "Never interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake."
Genoism | (03:21 AM CEST - Jun,09 2013 ) | can only give ur game once to a friend....cool, ill stick to a pc where i can give it as many times as i well damn please.
-=WolverinE=- | (05:59 AM CEST - Jun,09 2013 ) | TV, TV, TV, SPORTS, TV, CALL OF DOODY!
Sabot | (12:10 PM CEST - Jun,09 2013 ) | So after one trade-in or given away to a friend, for a substantial loss.. the games then end up in landfill. Every Eggbox idiot will acquire a library of games that will obviously be redundant and worthless. No value to move on. So shelves fill with one-stop, 'give once to friends' or buy at full price and permanently make a loss. This is against everything environmental. Would like to know what the government thinks about all this dumping?
This is like buying a printer that you can't change the ink in. Either give it to a friend or chuck it in landfill...
People who buy into this will be doing it at night with hoods on. You would seriously need to have issues to think this was ok. Parents will go mad when they realise that 'Johnny' has duped them into a permanent loss contract. Lol
The trouble with this is America have got used to downloading games on Eggbox or STEAM for a while now. So M$ are banking on that clientele being adopters. Of course as many have said, they have limited bandwidth or don't like the 'check in'. But one thing has changed, the, end of physical games on that console is what is being championed ; all be it subtly. M$ are killing off game shops to claim 100% profit on downloads. People are idiots, many will see it as not an issue.

Windows phone is actually decent imo. It's bloated and always hungry but I really like how it works in everyday use. App store is shit in comparison to ios or android but it seems to work better than android and a smidge better than ios with normal simple tasks. Don't get me wrong though there are downsides not to mention the fact that 7.5 and previous windows phones haven't ever really caught on for good reason.
The rest I agree on verbatim. We have this large corp that basically owns the PC space OS wise and yet they ignore gaming and anything that could help people adopt an xbox. Imagine a windows based game box. MS could've rode the steam train and had a virtual store on PC and console and even phones/tablets. Gaming on windows only devices remains sacrosanct. Now linux and mobile OS gaming is going everywhere and they have almost no horses in this race.

Once they realized crap like this does not sell, they'll end up changing the whole thing.
BTW, I wonder if the whole online crap is needed to be able spy on users in their own homes for the US goverment. Maybe I'm just a paranoid...

Hmmm. I guess that's another reason why people will just go with PS4 - the Japanese won't spy for the US.
BTW, I just read that the PS4 won't require any sort of online activation crap and you'll be able to trade your games - much like with PS3 - so I guess this battle is already decided.

Just posted this to Hx.

Sony also sought to distinguish its games machine by announcing it would not introduce any new restrictions on pre-owned disc-based games bought from friends or retailers, nor would it require users to regularly authenticate their machines via the internet to allow games to continue being played.
By contrast, Microsoft has introduced limitations on who consumers can buy second-hand titles from and has introduced a requirement to connect to the net once every 24-hours to play games on the Xbox One.
"With Sony continually pushing their gaming credentials and the development of the PlayStation brand for gamers throughout their presentation - it has very publicly slapped Microsoft across the face," said Alex Simmons, UK Editor-in-Chief of news site IGN.com.
"Talk of restrictions on the sale of pre-owned games and a requirement for an internet connection have been two of the largest consumer concerns surrounding the next-generation consoles."
quote:
The Japanese firm announced at the E3 trade show that its machine would be sold for £349 in the UK, $399 in the US and 399 euros across Europe.
It added that it would not impose restrictions on second-hand games.
Sony also unveiled what its box would look like, having previously kept the design under wraps at its February PS4 press conference.
For many in the audience at the Los Angeles event, the scale of the price difference came as the biggest shock.
Earlier in the day Microsoft had revealed its new console would cost £429 in the UK, $499 in the US and 499 euros.
"Clearly the big headline is that the PlayStation is going to be $100 less than the Xbox One when they come out in the US," Stephen Totilo, editor-in-chief of the gaming news site Kotaku, told the BBC.
"Microsoft is going to need to look again at its price or explain why it offers better value, such as the inclusion of its Kinect sensor.
I guess M$ will be gulping like beached fat greedy whales, now!

There's a new version? I didn't know as my versions are only up to 3.5. It takes some getting used to and doesn't have as many features but it gets most of what's needed done. Kids use it for school all the time and even projects haven't had an issue yet.
