TechNews - Windows 8.1 -> call it Windows 7.8. - tech|

- MSI debuts world's first and only 27inch AIO gaming system - MSI AG2712 (WindTop AG2712) features 27inch ten-point

covered with anti-glare substance. The system AG2712 is based on
quad-core Intel Core i7 mobile microprocessor (Core i7-3630QM with
2.40GHz clock-speed and maximum turbo speed of 3.40GHz) as well as
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670MX discrete graphics solution with 3GB GDDR5
memory. The system comes equipped with 4GB DDR3 memory (up to 16MB),
1TB 3.5” hard disk drive, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Blu-ray DVD drive, 3-in-1
card reader, 2MP webcam as well as 5W*2 5.1-channel speakers with THX

- Windows 8.1 is bringing back some familiar parts of Windows 7
- One
might theorize that this wrong-headed decisiveness is what led to Steve
Sinofsky's departure from Microsoft, and that the current edict to fix
things from on high is something that could never have happened with
him still in charge. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that
Microsoft, is belatedly, is finally listening to feedback from its
customers and changing the product as a result. That is, by far, the
most alarming thing that didn't happen-Windows division protestations
to the contrary notwithstanding-.during the Sinofsky regime. Put
simply, Microsoft should have designed Windows 8 this way from the
beginning, and didn't because the Windows division was given too much
free reign after its Windows 7 successes. And it's doing it now because
the leadership that triggered six years of ignoring customer wishes is
no longer there. As a result, Windows 8.1
will more closely resemble Windows 7 than the original Windows 8 version.
In related news, here's a Windows 8.1 9374 walkthrough video
- Microsoft Posts Record Profits! - Microsoft
has posted record profits for the quarter ending March 31, even
after accounting for a $733 million fine paid to the European
Commission. Revenue was $20.489 billion, up 18 percent on the same
quarter last year. Operating income was up 19 percent, at $7.612
billion. Earnings per share were also up, gaining 20 percent at $0.72.
The company announced a dividend of $0.23 per share. Windows Division
revenue was $5.703 billion, up 23 percent on the same quarter a year
ago. However, $1.085 billion of this was revenue taken in previous
quarters for the Windows Upgrade Offer. Excluding this, revenue was
$4.618 billion, essentially unchanged year on year. Operating income
for the division was $3.459 billion, up 16 percent from third quarter
2012.
- Apple Stock Plunges to $400 After Supplier Warns of Weak Sales
- Apple, which last year bumped the screen size of its iPhone to
4-inches, has largely been coasting on a
"if-it-isn't-broken-don't-fix-it" approach to its operating system.
While sales were strong last quarter, investors hammered the company's
stock, concerned
about weakening margins (profitability). For a while it looked like
$420 was a solid floor that the stock would resist breaking through.
But amid the supplier warning Apple's stock plunged briefly below $400
USD. It is currently trading around $403 USD. Apple has lost over a
quarter trillion dollars in market capitalization over the last half
year, since hitting a record $700 USD per share last September.
Overall, the tech sector was down on Wednesday, but Apple's stock sunk
more than most, dipping over 5 percent on the bad news. Rival Google
Inc.'s (GOOG) stock is trading around $780 USD, down ~1.5 percent.
Google's market capitalization is currently around two-thirds that of
Apple, as its stock hovers around record highs of $800 USD per share.
- Cooking Pot Can Produce 5, 10 Volts of Electricity for Device
- A student startup from Utah has created a
cooking pot that is capable of generating power through
thermoelectricity. Former University of Utah students David Toledo
and Paul Slusser created a startup called Power Practical, which offers
their cooking pot invention -- the PowerPot. The PowerPot looks like a
regular cooking pot that can be used on a camping trip, but it can
actually turn heat and water into electricity. The PowerPot captures
electrons traveling from the heated pot to the cooler water contained
inside, and the greater the difference in temperature, the more
electricity produced. Not only can these PowerPots be used to charge
smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices on camping trips, but
they can also be used in emergency kits and eventually be sent to
developing countries, where smartphones are becoming more and more
present (yet charging is a nuisance). The PowerPot V costs $149 while
the PowerPot X costs $249.
- The Most Complicated Way to Make a (Mini, Lego) Free Throw - Dubbed the GBC 5 (Great Ball Contraption-5), this
self-replenishing ball tosser uses roughly 2,500 pieces in five modules
with two motors and a 9V pneumatic pump to continually cycle, split,
accelerate, shift, and shoot miniature basketballs around its table
top-sized track. A LEGO NXT controller acts as the system's brain and
also tracks the number of shots made. If only the Golden State Warriors
could hit their free throws as consistently
- Who Wants to Be a Mars Colonist? - Mars One officials are looking
for a few good men for a one way trip to Mars as a private
corporate astronaut. To get your foot in the rocket, all you have to do
is submit a one minute audition tape ala American Idol and impress the
space experts with your willingness to throw your life away millions of
miles from your home planet. Now who on Earth could resist such a
proposition? :P
- Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive (video) - It weighs
4,774 pounds, nearly 550 kilograms more than the 3,573-pound SLS
AMG GT. The weight difference comes from the heft of the lithium-ion
battery array, composed of 12 modules of 72 cells that weigh 1,208.1
pounds. The batteries change the weight balance of the coupe by one
percent: the SLS AMG GT is balanced 54/46 front-to-rear, the Electric
Drive is 53/47. It's an energetic beast: The 400-volt, liquid-cooled,
60-kilowatt-hour battery is rated at 552 horsepower and 737 pound-feet
of immediate torque

I don't know why Windows 8 was necessary for this.
But, let's hope that those are not empty promises.

| Csimbi | (08:35 AM CEST - Apr,22 2013 ) | | I did not read anything so far that would indicate that it's worth upgrading from 7 - whatever the price tag may be. | |
| gx-x | (06:13 PM CEST - Apr,22 2013 ) | To windows 8 and 8.1, windows 7 is like windows 10...
