TechNews - MS has no plans for Windows 7 SP2 - briefly|
| (hx) 10:26 PM CET - Oct,28 2012 |
- Apple announces 7.9-inch iPad Mini with a 1,024 x
768 display, A5 - The
iPad mini
has been revealed by Apple at a special event in San Jose. The device
has a 7.9 inch display, 4:3 aspect ratio, lightning dock connector, and
front and rear cameras. In addition, it uses an A5 CPU, LTE is onboard,
has 10 hr battery life and runs iOS6. The device is clearly targeting
the Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire market and with a starting price
of $329, Apple is finally breaking into the lower price point
demographics. Apple is also using the same resolution as the iPad 2,
while not a "retina" screen, all apps will scale natively to the screen
which makes all available apps good to go for this new form factor.
Apple also updated the full sized iPad to the 4th generation that
features an A6X processor, lighting bolt connector, faster wifi
connection, an updated camera and still comes in black and white.
- Kickstarter Project Offering A $99 Supercomputer -
To make parallel computing ubiquitous, developers need
access to a platform that is affordable, open, and easy to use. The goal of the Parallella project is to
provide such a platform!
- Microsoft has no plans for a second Windows 7
Service Pack -Waiting for a second Windows 7 Service Pack?
Keep waiting - it doesn't sound like Microsoft will be releasing one.
Sources close to Microsoft's sustained engineering team, which builds
and releases service packs, have told The Register there are no plans
for a second Windows 7 SP - breaking precedent on the normal
cycle of updating Windows. Instead, Microsoft will keep updating
Windows 7 using patches released each month until support for Windows 7
comes to an end. That date is currently slated for 24 months after the
most current SP - that's SP1, which was released in February 2011 - and
would put end of life at January 2020. The decision not to release a
second service pack for Windows 7 comes just at the time when Microsoft
would typically be preparing to release the pack.
- Pokki brings back the Start Menu to Windows 8 - Open
up the
Windows 8 desktop mode and you'll notice a major change: The Start menu
is gone. Without the familiar button at the lower left corner, many
veteran Windows desktop users are lost in Windows 8. SweetLabs wants to
make the transition smoother for them by bringing the Start menu to the Windows 8
desktop with its Pokki software.
- The new and updated games of Windows 8 - Yet
over the past decade, games like Microsoft's Solitaire, Minesweeper,
and Mahjong may be the most widely played video games on any platform.
The free game tradition continues with Windows 8, but oddly enough,
this year's collection of Microsoft-produced titles doesn't come
preinstalled with the standard version of the operating
system (some OEMs might fix this oversight before shipping their
hardware, however). Instead, the games are tucked away in the Windows
Games Store alongside more professional third-party fare like Fruit
Ninja and Hydro Thunder Hurricane, as well as countless cheap-o
knock-offs like Mahjong Plus and Card Game Collection. Downloading and
installing Microsoft's free titles is relatively easy, but we have to
wonder how many Windows 8 users will actively seek them out, rather
than stumbling upon them in a preinstalled Games folder.
- The 25 most popular passwords of 2012 - The
full list is posted here.
- Digital rights activist buys data of 1.1 million
Facebook users for $5 - Bogomil Shopova recently purchased a
collection of 1.1 million Facebook users' names, IDs and
e-mail accounts. Fortunately, the Bulgarian blogger and digital rights
activist has no intentions of spamming the list or hacking into
accounts- he did it to prove a point. That point, of course, was to
highlight how easy it is to gather personal information from the social
networking site.
- Happy Birthday, Mr. Gates! - Microsoft's
former CEO, Bill Gates, is celebrating his 57th birthday today. Join us
in celebrating and wishing him the best today! As much as I've been
annoyed with some of the business practices of Microsoft and the
Windows operating system, I can't deny the impact he has had on the
world of technology, and the things that may not have happened had he
not been there to create something great for others to aspire to.
- Kim Dotcom to Relaunch Megaupload on Raid
Anniversary - Megaupload owner Kim Dotcom has announced that
his peer-to-peer network would be relaunched on the anniversary of the
police raid on his home and his arrest. The
new service will be called Megabox and will resume operations
on January 20th
- Samsung Galaxy Q to Feature Foldable Display,
Debuts in 2013? - So
what is the GT-B9150? It is a 5.3-inch sAMOLED HD Dual
display device that runs Android and will likely officially be called
the 'Samsung Galaxy Q'. The rumor mill suggest it will run on an EXYNOS
5250 processor and will have 2GB of RAM. Other specs are believed to be
an 8MP back cam, a 2MP front cam, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 3500mAh
battery.
- New Samsung Galaxy S III commercial - The
ad shows a father leaving for a trip
and his daughters gifting him a video that they transfer via NFC.
Following this, his wife walks up to him and says she's made a video
herself and bumps the phone on her husbands and voila, it's in his
handset. So basically, it's a lot more convenient sharing sex tapes via
NFC too, rather than the previously famous Bluetooth transfers.
- Nokia Lumia 920 makes its advertising debut on
AT&T - In
the video you get to see small bits and pieces of the new
Windows Phone UI as well as the video recording capabilities.
- Motorola HC1 'Google Glass' Wearable Computer
Revealed - The display is mounted on a short arm, placing it
just in front and just below the user's eyeline. What you see is
equivalent to a virtual 15-inch panel and it runs at a
SVGA 800 x 600 resolution. Other key specs include the
energy-saving 800MHz OMAP3 dual core processor, WiFi-b/g (no
wireless-N? seriously?), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, USB, and a 9-axis
head-tracking accelerometer. There's also a mountable 2MP webcam on the
other side so the user can show what he's seeing. Pricing is in the
$4,000 to $5,000 range with discounts offered for volume purchases. It
should be noted, though, that this is being offered by Motorola
Solutions and not the Google-owned Motorola Mobility.
- Internet of food: Arduino-based, urban aquaponics
in Oakland - The land in West Oakland where Eric
Maundu is trying to farm is covered with freeways, roads, light rail
and parking lots so there's not much arable land and the soil
is contaminated. So Maundu doesn't use soil. Instead he's growing
plants using fish and circulating water. It's called aquaponics- a
gardening system that combines hydroponics (water-based planting) and
aquaculture (fish farming). It's been hailed as the future of farming:
it uses less water (up to 90% less than traditional gardening), doesn't
attract soil-based bugs and produces two types of produce (both plants
and fish).
- Boeing's CHAMP Missle Drone Flying EMP Weapon - Do
you remember in the Matrix movie
when the crew was getting chased down by those flying squid-like
sentinels? Do you remember how they said their only weapon against
their mechanized foes was an EMP, or an electromagnetic pulse? Well,
now Boeing has developed a missile with electronic-killing EMP-like
capabilities, knocking out computers and electronics as it flies
overhead.
- London 3D printer show: A world of pure (plastic)
imagination - The future is made of plastic and is being
gradually spat out of a 3D printer. CNET's
Luke Westaway took to the floor of London's 3D printer show
to examine trinkets, musical instruments, a house, and even replica cat
skeletons scanned from mummified remains

- Man Robbed on Train Tracks, Hit by Train in Sweden
- A 28-year-old Tunisian who was caught on
security camera
stealing from a man who had fallen onto the tracks on the Stockholm
subway and then leaving him to be hit by a train was sentenced Tuesday
to one and a half years in prison for theft. A Swedish court ordered
Nadar Khiari to pay $1,800 in damages to his victim and ruled that he
will be deported after serving his sentence. He was not charged with
leaving the man on the tracks, since Swedish law does not require
people to help. The September incident stirred outrage in Sweden after
the footage was broadcast on TV and went viral around the world.

Seems they are going backwards.
I was no plan on getting one anyway.
Microsoft has no plans for a second Windows 7 Service Pack
These guys would say just about anything to spoon-feed you that WinDOS 8 crap.
But IT departments will force the release eventually anyway.
Pokki brings back the Start Menu to Windows 8
And if they were smart enough, they would charge for it and get rich on MS's mistake.

Truly pathetic.

It's a good thing I never joined.
Today's youth does not understand the value of privacy. How would they? They teach them crap in school.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Gates!
There's always a reason to get drunk. I wish you fired Ballmer a long time ago though.
Kim Dotcom to Relaunch Megaupload on Raid Anniversary
Hmmm. I have never understood why pirates don't encrypt their stolen file names and file contents - they are so easy to find. I guess this Kim chap realized that too late.
Boeing's CHAMP Missle Drone Flying EMP Weapon
Congratulations! I guess it won't take long to replace that EMP charge with a nuke.

It's an oldie, but it's good to see the result. I would have cut his balls of though.

The thing is I can get used to that kind of interface on my tablet or phone (no sdcard on winmobile is why I didn't go nokia this time around) but not on the PC. You were already able to do that with rainlender and other apps for the pc. It's good for showing off but that's about it imo. People are defending the metro UI but are blinded by the fact that it's forced on you leaving you little choice and adds another layer or step in getting things done. I don't care if you like the interface on the desktop but I should have the option to go classic desktop without themes without third party apps or some sort of workaround.
Win8 metro I expected the transition to mobile as a mobile interface not a desktop one. We have cheap phones (sammy admire was 40 dollars earlier this year that can hit 900mhz) like the kyocera rise that's $99 with the latest version of android and 1gig snapdragon. Once these become the norm MS is going to be able push windows mobile into the home as an all in one product. PC runs on windows plus your phone and then if you have an xbox even more crap to sync up. They may even go the unity route with windows mobile. MS is trying hard to replicate the play store and that's a no brainer. They might be able to pull it off who knows.

The thing is, if I were to setup the metro screen, it would have calendar, mail and browser. None of which would be m$ products. The rest of the screen is just a major waste of space. I have never used windows media center on win 7. Maybe once or twice when I first got win 7 but that's it. It's just not good enough. Now they force that whole concept onto win8 primary screen, aka metro. Why? Does the wmp support various subtitles (if any)? Does it support plugins? Can it use CUDA for rendering? DXVA? Can a 1ghz atom media machine use win8 like it can use some other media centers to play EVERYTHING? No, it can't.
Now imagine installing win8 to your kid's PC. "Daddy, daddy, what is this stock market?" just a bunch of bloatware....Hell, I don't even follow stock market since I don't gamble lol.
quote: We have cheap phones (sammy admire was 40 dollars earlier this year that can hit 900mhz) like the kyocera rise that's $99 with the latest version of android and 1gig snapdragon.
Try Huawei G300. Depending on the country/contract it can be as cheap as 50$. 1ghz arm7 snapdr, andreno 200, 512mb ram, 1gb storage memory, 2GB internal SD, gorilla glass, 4" IPS touch screen, ICS...
quote: Once these become the norm MS is going to be able push windows mobile into the home as an all in one product.
Doubtfully. These cheap phones have cuts here and there to be able to remain cheap and somehow I don't think m$ is going to hand out win8 mobile for free or for the android license price (virtually little to no cost). Win8 mobile would turn a potentially 100$ device into a 150$ priced device. No Chinese company is going to embrace it. It's not even "quantity vs quality" issue since I don't see what can win8 offer that android doesn't already have and do better.
quote: MS is trying hard to replicate the play store and that's a no brainer. They might be able to pull it off who knows.
Yea, I saw their store lol. Did you see how laughable those apps are? I'd like to think that devs are going to step in and create apps but somehow I don't see why would they do that. If they want to make money and pay for license in the process, there is iOS. OR they can develop for free for android. Why would they bother to develop for OS that is going to take MAYBE 10% of market share? Maybe some will find a fiscally valid plan to develop some basic apps that will sell for sure, make money on that and then move on back to android/iOS.

You know, the shell in Windows 3.1 sucked and there were plenty of replacements available. Since MS development seems to be going backwards, I'd expect history to repeat itself.
But, I won't be getting WinDOS 8, so I don't really care.

I missed this phone. It's not listed on amazon wireless or any of the carriers that I'd use here in the states. Looks like it might work on tmobiles network as it's gsm. The rise works on virgin and metro which would run me 35 or less a month for unlimited texting/data. I'm seeing it for about 250 unlocked. I'll save it for future reference thanks!

I'm thinking xbox with live back in the beginning. It's getting to the point where the hardware can almost run win7 or win8 even and be usable. If they were smart about it an optimized mobile version with sd support on cheap phones like the rise and others for example can get them in the door easily. I'm fairly certain they could do it. Will they though? I don't know.

The store is horrible. Only way to get anyone to use it or develop for it is to saturate the low end market and gain as many users as they can. Everything would have to be ready and running smoothly though with the store or people will just switch back eventually.

I have the Huawei Ascend G300. It's a smooth impressive phone and very, fast. Review
In fact the wife bought me it after buying the Huawei Blaze for £60 sim-free. (which i had for about 3 months)
She got it for me for £72 and got it unlocked online for £4.99
She liked mine so much she bought herself one! It's tied to Orange network in the UK -Pay As You Go. £100 instore/online. Again got it home went online that night and paid the £4.99 to unlock it, 24hrs later code through by email and running it on a £10 per month 3mobile sim only monthly rolling contract, which gives 100mins/3000 texts and 1Gb Data. Stuck in a 32Gb SD card fpr installing apps too and have bags of space.
There's a new ruling coming out that Jan next year any locked phone will only be unlocked by the manufacturers discretion.

nice! Glad to hear about another happy g300 user :) You can unlock it yourself, no need to pay anyone:

you can check those forums for custom roms and guides, there plenty of users and plenty of custom roms.
anyway, let's get back to the topic :P
PS. About that ruling: sounds bad for users and sites that sell codes. BUT jailbraking iphone is also illegal yet people do it anyway :) Most phones can be hacked anyway. If you can fiddle with boot loader there is a very big chance that you can unlock the device into sim free mod.

go here: http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/technicaIndex.do?method=gotoProductSupport&productId=3940&tb=0%29;
download HUAWEI Ascend G300 firmware(U8815,Android 4.0,V100R001C00B934,General Version)
put it on the sdcard in dload folder (make one if you dont have it), turn off the phone and hold power button and both volume keys at the same time to enter the flash mode for rom update. Phone should update itself to ICS and baseband 2030. I highly recommend you to check out the modaco forums g300 section on how to root your phone + instal clock works mode recovery. It's nothing major but it will allow you to put custom roms and have control over your system (also some applications need rooted phone to work, some apps have more options if you have rooted phone etc.)
