RAGE Gameplay Performance and Image Quality - tech
(hx) 01:29 PM CEST - Oct,20 2011
The chaps over at HardOCP have posted their RAGE Gameplay Performance and Image Quality evaluation. Here's an excerpt:
The NVIDIA GPU based video cards came out of testing as very clear winners in this game. Performance was exceptional, and they support the texture transcoding on the GPU feature by way of NVIDIA's CUDA technology. All three NVIDIA video cards were capable of playing RAGE at 2560x1600 with 8X AA, 16X AF, Large Texture Cache, and GPU Transcode enabled. The GTX 580, GTX 570, and GTX 560 Ti all put in very close performances due to the 60FPS performance cap in RAGE.

The AMD video cards we used in this evaluation performed well. The HD 6970 was playable at 2560x1600 with 8X AA and 16X AF, same as the NVIDIA video cards. Performance was lower than the much less expensive GeForce GTX 560 Ti, but it was playable. The Radeon HD 6950 and HD 6870 were playable in RAGE at 2560x1600 and 4X AA.

Overall, the experiences provided by the AMD Radeon HD 6970, HD 6950, and HD 6870 were comparable to those provided by the NVIDIA video cards. The GeForce card had an edge thanks to CUDA-based GPU texture transcoding, but it wasn't that big of a deal. After a few minutes in any given environment, the texture pop-in issue fades to being a minor annoyance with the AMD video cards installed.

The blurry textures on many (if not most) surfaces, however, can't be helped by GPU transcoding, or anisotropic texture filtering, or even selecting Large for the Texture Cache option. The PC version of Rage shipped with the same texture assets as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, in spite of the fact that texture memory is not limited as much with modern video cards as it is on gaming consoles. The only way that particular issue can be fixed is through a (presumably very large) high-resolution texture pack.

Unless ID's next game is PC only I'm not getting it. Still can't understand why THIS game needs 3 dvd's to install. For the size of the game and crap graphics it's stupid. Just bad code is all I can think of. I had the game maxxed with low AA and it never lagged a bit. How can it with all that BS blurry crap textures and slow fill rate. Crap code.

It's funny because John Carmack was talking so high about this game a couple years ago and how it was going to be the wave of the future. Now it's released and it's just an average, mid-range game. I think Carmack needs to spend more time with his first love, video games, instead of SpaceShipOne.

Let's face it. Carmack got old and rusty.

Problem is... this game arrived 3 years late.

id, you ignorant sluts.

That's fine. You go roll in the hay with the cute little bubble-brained consoles. When you soon find their attentions drifting away from you, we PC types will be waiting.

With whips.

I just couldn't get any chub going for this game. In fact as I get older I'm finding it increasingly hard to find games I can enjoy for more than a week. Dues Ex was a nice distraction for me as contemporary titles go. My major gripe with it though is all the god damn cutscenes like floating down if I jumped from a height. It's cool the first couple of times then it's just being a douche. The other hiccup I had was it was always better to tussle in melee since it's one shot one kill while the weapons usually aren't. Dead Island was kinda boring and I swear I just played through it as a zombie.

Anyways whatever I need to find my mojo again somewhere.

Yes, it is a problem. Our expectations are different than a 16-20 years old's. We don't take any shite now, we have preferences and we watch carefully where we spend our hard-earned cash.

Doom 4 is DOOMED because this game sucks so much. So PC gamer says.
