 RAGE Review Roundup - briefly
(hx) 06:49 PM CEST - Oct,04 2011
Today is the North American release date for RAGE, and the game is now unlocked in some territories on Steam. The first reviews for the game were published overnight and paint a reasonably solid picture of the violent adventure: 1UP B, Ars technicaAusGamers 9/10, CVG 8.9/10, Destructoid 7/10, Eurogamer 8/10, GamePro 4/5, GameSpot 8/10, GameTrailers 9/10, Gaming Age C+, IGN 8.5/10, IncGamers 9/10, Inside Gaming Daily 9/10, OXM 7.5/10,  Joystiq, PC Gamer 84%, Strategy Informer 6.5/10, TeamXbox 9.5/10, The Guardian 4/5, The Telegraph 3.5/5, VE3D
There's just not a lot of "there" there - my first playthrough, which included every side-mission and several job board assignments, took me 9 hours and 15 minutes. My second, where I completed every side-mission, every job board assignment, every courier mission, and most of the races, took eight hours and 50 minutes. RAGE ends so abruptly that I didn't realize it was over until the final cutscene began. I was left wondering what had happened.

And that's the thing. The aspects of RAGE that seem interesting and different at first never grow or expand. The enemy reactions, the clutching, the begging for their lives, it's repeated identically so often over the course of the game that it loses any impact or meaning. The town that initially holds the promise of a big, wide, asteroid-murdered world is a facade for a few fetch quests down some of the most guided, narrow shooter levels this side of a Call of Duty title. RAGE is pretty at times, but it's not enough to paint over the truth - that Id's labor feels like a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized. And the game that is there just isn't enough to compete with other, better shooters we've seen this year.

That's a major disappointment. Finished in 9 hours. Fuck that, not worth it. Just as you get into it, boom it's over. What a total waste of fucking time.

RayzorBlue(08:25 PM CEST - Oct,04 2011 )
It's no Fallout competitor then is it, 9 hours, I work more than that in a day.

Today i saw the GameTrailers review on Rage. Those fakin morons did a review on a Xbox.... What a bunch of idiots!
Im going to get my game in friday so, well see... I dont care if its 9 hours, i plan to take my time with this game since it has amazing enviroments that interests me as a game artist 8-)

Stupid game launches in 3 todays in Europe.

Anyway I am not in a hurry. Still have few hours left in Deus Ex anyway.

I'm much more eagerly anticipating Trine 2 and Torchlight 2.

Oh and Dungeon Defender, duke nukem bulldozer edition! Fuckers.

Screw id, I'm not even go into the trouble of playing a pirate copy of it.

Right now I'm more interested on when Jonathan Blow finishes The Witness than anything else on PC gaming - that thing looks like it's going to rule.

so, everyone bashes the game, tell how poor it is and then we see most reviews score some average 8/10 even close to 9/10. I guess scores mean nothing now. Well, at least it's "official".

Tom(01:07 AM CEST - Oct,06 2011 )
It's not a ground breaking game, it's 10 hours at the most and it's $60. The guys can review it 10/10, I don't really give a shit. I was expecting at least 20 hours of gameplay and a huge world to play in. I'll buy it when it's 20 or 30 bucks. The price it should be.

Probably another buy the game and 50 addons deal, no thanks.

Seriously, I have no fucking idea what these companies are thinking when they release shit like this and rape the shit out of the game. Do they only have the fucking intellect to make a game 10 hours? Then it's like $6x10 for your entertainment. Fuck I rather get this pirated and fuck you iD and John Carmack. Make me salivate for months for 9 hours of gameplay. FFS.

I was gonna buy this too but seeing 9, 9.5 here and there for time to complete F that, I'll be done it in 2 nights of playing. Not at all worth $60.

Fucking trolls,
Anyways great game. Worth it for sure.
Ofcourse if ur not a cheap ass.

Tom(02:29 AM CEST - Oct,06 2011 )
Cheap? far from it asswipe. I just don't see anything in a limited game for $60. It even has SHIT multiplayer. I'm glad you go out and buy any piece of shit that hits the shelves, OH you are such the better gamer than me. FFS I'd rather buy a few blurays instead of this joke of a game.

I didn't come back to reply to you, personally I couldn't be bothered. I came here to post a DECENT review that paints the perfect picture of this game and the reason I am not going to go buy it.

Unlike all the bullshit reviews funded by marketing campaigns and anything for a hit, this guy tells it like it is.

Tom(02:30 AM CEST - Oct,06 2011 )
and learn what trolling is asswipe.. same goes to the other moron who uses the term and has no fucking clue what it means.

John Carmack is a ZeniMax whore Tom...

Mega Texture*9hours
---------------------------- = ZeniMax fucked to the tune of $60
Marketing^2

tbh the maths might be a bit off, but there is no accounting for marketing hype :D

gx-x(05:50 AM CEST - Oct,06 2011 )

that sums it up.

Well I got the game. Reason why is because they gave a $20 gift card with it. That means the game cost me $40. After playing it for almost 6 hours I can say this.

- definitely good marketing for the game
- it's not that fantastic, it's not a huge leap over Doom
- it was made to be open but yet it is very closed and quite linear. You can't just go anywhere because there is the invisible walls blocking you.
- weapons are ok, nothing fantastic including the boomerang one
- you can't see your legs or anything
- there is no day or night at all, the sky is always the same
- racing is kinda lame and then it's quantity of bad guys rather than better ai
- ai is lame overall, yeah they run on walls and hang and stuff but easy as hell to kill.
- there is dumb stuff with the bosses, hide behind a concrete wall you are not exposed what so ever, but worry not ID made it so the things the throw or shoot at our miraculously go through 10 inch concrete walls even if you don't see it hitting you
- character animations and voice work are excellent.
- graphics are more console than PC grade. You have to carefully hack your rageconfig file to get the improved gfx and then maybe you might lose your achievements
- no DM or anything of the sort. Are you really going to get together and spend $120 on a game to do co-op? Well not me anyway.
- John Carmack loses a lot of points with me on this one. I don't know if I can ever take anything that guy says again with a grain of salt. He spent a lot of time on this game? BS. Certainly wasn't to revolutionize or change anthing, it's Doom in another skin.

It's a good try by ID to make a different game but in the end, the marketing is what this game has that's good, as I knew from the reviews. The REAL reviews, not the paid bullshit reviews.

Overall, even though I have not finished the game I rate it 6/10. If you got nothing else to play and are tired as shit of repetitive crap like BF then pick it up. If you get lucky maybe you too will get money back when you buy it. BF3 'is' really a big piece of shit thought. No amount of playing it makes me think otherwise. It's BC2 and BF2 glued together. Netcode sucks and the game is filled with cheap hackers and naive folk on PC. What else is new?
