Students, buy a Windows 7 PC, get a free Xbox 360 - briefly
(hx) 02:59 PM CEST - May,21 2011
Microsoft has announced a heck of a deal for anyone in the US looking to buy a new computer or laptop: spend $699 or more on a Windows 7 PC and get a free Xbox 360 'Slim' 4GB console (MSRP $199). The only catch is that you need to be attending high school or college and provide a .edu email address or valid student ID card to verify that fact.
While the current school year is coming to a close, it's never too early to start thinking ahead to next year. Are you about to head to college this fall for the first time? Planning another year on campus? Worried what next year has in store? Wondering what you'll need, how you'll succeed or what fun adventures will be around the corner? We can't predict the future but here at Microsoft, we've come up with a way to help you succeed in the coming year, while building on the fun and friendships that are key to your life. And starting May 22nd for a limited time, we are bringing students a very special offer.

When students buy a Windows 7 PC over $699, they will receive a FREE Xbox 360*.

You can buy any kind of PC, although we recommend a few specifically for students like the HP Pavillion DM4 a great entertainment system on the go, the Dell Inspiron 14r a stylish powerful 14” PC, and the Samsung Series 9 a computer that has been described as looking like it is about to rocket off the runway. Ask Ben the PC guy, he has one! If you are still trying to figure out what might be the best option for you, you can use the PC Scout, an interactive app available on windows.com that helps you find a perfect match.

If you have a .edu email address you can purchase your new PC through one of our participating retailers including Dell.com, HP.com or Microsoft Store. If you don't have a .edu address or prefer to walk into a store, touch the PCs and test their features, bring your Student ID into Best Buy or any Microsoft Store retail location Check with your chosen retailer for additional specifics they may have in place.

Once you are set up with the perfect PC for school and play, there is still more! With this offer, you get an Xbox 360 4GB console with your Windows 7 PC purchase over $699 - no cost and no strings! While a Windows 7 PC is perfect for staying connected to your social networks, surfing the web, gaming and streaming videos, music and more, when you add the power of Xbox 360, you've got a world of entertainment at your fingertips. You'll never lack for opponents with the huge network of gamers playing on PCs and Xbox 360 consoles**, so it's easy to find friends or players at your level. And it's easy to stream music, TV and more from your PC directly to your Xbox 360.

The offer is available in the United States starting May 22, so you'll have to wait a few days until you can rush into the store. End dates vary by retailer so shop early! It's also coming soon in France and Canada.

great way to get rid of their overheating chipsets.

What the heck kind of deal is that?

They should be paying people to use shitty vis7a :P It's worthless compared to the cheap labor manufacturing of an xblock sos chipset .

Honestly though they ain't really giving shit away its just bribery! And its not really costing them at all, they'll make even more money on those who spend on its console platform.

They want to flush the current Xbox from the market.
Probably as a preparation for Xbox 2.

Yea, that true i think too... they just try to sell whatever they can before the new GEN comes...

They're giving away overpriced shit 4GB units. Who gives a shit. Probably because they are so badly overstocked with them.

Wow, what's with all of the negativity? All new computers come with Windows 7 by default, so if you are already going to buy a computer, why not get a free Xbox with it? If you hate it so much and don't want it, give it away.

As for Windows 7 64-bit, it is the best version to date and you can run more than 4GB ram. Actually, 64-bit XP was the best but very little software was designed for it, but what can you do. Your only other option is to buy a crap Mac or run Linux, but again, not allot of games and software for it.

First off I am in Canada, this is only applicable to the USA. Second of all it is the low end model which you can't do jack shit on and will end up costing you down the road as you workaround all it's lacking features. When they had a sale on these at Walmart they just sat on the shelf and never moved. Windows 7 is a fine OS as was Vista 64 that was great after SP1. I see no going back to XP old crap. If you have an old piece of crap computer you run XP.

Isn't MS supposed to be pushing gaming on PC? Yet here they are giving away a console with a PC purchase?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know there is only one Xbox 360 model which is the new Xbox 360 S, but you can buy it with or without or a hard drive. The one you're getting for free does not come with a hard drive but you can add one at any time. And even though it doesn't come with a hard drive it does have 4GB of internal memory which acts like a hard drive so you can still use Xbox Live and and do everything any other console can do but of course you are limited to 4GB instead of 250GB.

An Xbox 360 with a 250 GB hard drive retails for $299.99, without a hard drive it's $199.99, and if you want to buy a hard drive is $99.99.

I am curios, what's wrong with 4gb xblock? I haven't really looked into differences between versions. What makes it crap compared to better versions? I can get one for like ~70e and was thinking about it (cheap way to play driving games like forza). Is it really that unusable or what?

sorry for OT.

edit: and oh yea, kudos to m$ for promoting PC gaming /sarcasm

darknothing(02:59 AM CEST - May,24 2011 )
Tom nailed it, thats the problem with this promo.
Push PC gaming.. yet they release a console with the pc.
hmmm i wonder what platform they will get games for...

other than 4gb not much I suppose, really haven't looked into it though I'm sure if you did you might find it a limiting.. or maybe not.. Either way what has MS got against education that they would want to be distracting young scholars with heinous black box gaming devices.

well that's always been a bit obvious since MS got into the console gaming/entertainment market. It's not like they got any competition on the PC side, by that I mean Linux or OSX..

I just wonder how they keep crApple from doing anything to encourage opengl game development on its platform, do crApple just get paid off by MS to do a crap job of making their drivers/platform as shit as be for developers, while putting any meager amounts of effort into easily marketable insert i[device name here] where you will find more games targeted for those platforms.
