TechNews - GTX 550 Ti to launch on March 15 - tech|
| (hx) 07:17 PM CET - Feb,20 2011 |
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti to launch on March 15 - The
upcoming NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti, based
on the new GF116 chipset is expected to launch on March 15. Although
the GF116 is a mainstream chipset, NVIDIA has chosen to name its new
card the GTX 550 Ti, and not the GTS 550. Performance is estimated to
be up to 35% faster than the current AMD Radeon HD 5770, which also
means the new card will tread into the GeForce GTX 460 family's
territory.
- Google Releases Chrome 10 Beta - Chrome
is getting faster - 66% faster performance over existing
versions.
- Mozilla Delays Final Firefox Beta - Mozilla
announced the release of beta 12 will be delayed for at least a few
days while bugs are worked through. The five bugs being
addressed may actually create the need for a beta 13 before finally
issuing the Release Candidate.
- IE 9, Twitter integration, SkyDrive confirmed for
WP7 - Microsoft confirmed
that Windows Phone 7 will be getting Internet Explorer 9 in the second
half of 2011, something the company is calling a 'dramatically enhanced
browser experience.' Alongside IE 9 and multitasking, Windows Phone 7
will finally get Twitter integration into the People Hub which
currently only utilizes Facebook and Live as its social network
databases. In addition, support for Office documents in the cloud is
coming this year which would presumably use SkyDrive from a user's Live
ID.
- Windows 7 SP1 RTM now available on MSDN/TechNet - Microsoft
has released Windows 7 SP1 to MSDN and TechNet
customers on Wednesday. The free download allows Windows 7 customers to
upgrade their machines to the latest Service Pack. Microsoft has
confirmed the official build for Windows 7 SP1 RTM is
7601.17514.101119-1850. Microsoft will release Windows 7 SP1 to
non-MSDN and TechNet subscribers starting February 22, 2011. The update
will be available through Windows Updates for existing Windows 7
customers.
- Feature cut from Windows Home Server to return via
add-in - One of the crowning features of Windows Home
Server, which Microsoft announced it was cutting as part of the next
major version of the OS, is set to return with the help of some
third-party software makers. Drive pooling, which lets users take
multiple hard drives and turn them into one solid block of storage was
made possible by a feature called Drive Extender. In November, Microsoft announced it would be removing the
feature in the second major version of the Windows Home
Server software, code-named Vail, citing higher-capacity commodity hard
drives as making the feature obsolete.
- Zynga's Value Approaches $10 Billion Mark - Some
experts believe the astronomical value placed on these social media
companies is evidence of a looming tech bubble that could
eventual burst on investors.
- Xperia Play Officially Announced - After
months of speculation, confirmation and deliberation, the
Xperia Play has finally been officially announced by Sony and
will be available for purchase as early as March.
- Wired Launches Android e-Magazine - Rupert
Murdoch decided that one way to save his print business was to launch The
Daily exclusively though the iPad.
- Tasteless Marketing By LG Kicks Steve Jobs In The
Face - LG's marketing is tasteless to say the least. They
release a video
for the newly announced Optimus Pad, aka G-Slate, with a simulated
'Spec Fighter' video game challenging what clearly resembles Apple CEO
Steve Jobs and the iPad, not so cleverly renamed to the A-Pad. LG's
unnamed Ninja kicks Jobs in the face at about the 1:00 minute mark of
the video.
- Confessions of an Apple Store Employee - Apple
is famous for its secrecy, with a code of silence that runs from top
management all the way down to its retail employees. One Apple Store employee decided to throw
protocol to the curb and told PopularMechanic what it's
really like working at the vaunted retail outlets. Here's an excerpt:
- Why This Man Could Spend 20 Years In Jail For a
YouTube Video - Evan Emor posted a video on YouTube
that showed (through some simple editing) him singing a sexually
explicit song to a classroom full of elementary school students. He
didn't actually sing anything offensive in front of the kids. But he's
still facing 20 years in prison, on a felony charge of manufacturing
child sexual abusive material.
- Are We One of Many Universes? MIT Physicist Says
'Yes' - Some physicists have theorized
that only universes in which the laws of physics are 'just so' could
support life, and that if things were even a little bit different from
our world, intelligent life would be impossible. In that case, our
physical laws might be explained 'anthropically,' meaning that they are
as they are because if they were otherwise, no one would be around to
notice them.
- First Badass TV Spot for Zack Snyder's Sucker
Punch - Sucker Punch is Zack Snyder's
first movie not based on previous material, but an original idea that
he came up with and turned into a screenplay with co-writer Steve
Shibuya.
- Chilling Full-Length Trailer
for James Wan's 'Insidious' - A
family tries prevent evil spirits from trapping their
comatose son in a realm called The Further forever.
- Freaky Official Trailer for
Sci-Fi Horror Film 'Apollo 18' - The Weinstein Company will
be releasing the mysterious Apollo 18 in
theaters everywhere starting on April 22nd this spring.
- Hesher - Trailer - Hesher
is a loner. He hates the world and everyone in it. He has
long hair and tattoos. He's malnourished and smokes lots of cigarettes.
He likes fire and blowing things up. He lives in his van... until he
meets TJ.
- Family guy - Magic baby - Great
mini-sketch. Tends to sum it all up, doesn't it?
- Fake Video Fools the Media - This is
just your average 'dude posts funny fake video and the media
posts it as real' news item:
