 GeForce GTX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI - tech
(hx) 10:10 PM CET - Dec,02 2010
Upgrading your video card but having a hard time deciding which upgrade path you should take? HardOCP's GeForce GTX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI evaluation should help you decide which road is right for you. Here's a taster:
What strikes us about our gameplay experiences today is the fact that with GTX 460 1GB SLI the 1GB of RAM on the GTX 460 may be holding it back at higher resolutions with AA. In all of our gameplay testing, we were surprised how well GTX 460 1GB SLI keeps up with the more expensive GeForce GTX 580. While it comes close, and at times exceeds it in framerate, it doesn’t deliver the same gameplay experience. The GeForce GTX 580 has more RAM on board, 1.5GB to be exact, and this seems to be giving it an advantage in some DX11 games when AA is enabled at high levels.

The game that showed the most fluctuation in performance with the GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI was Civilization V. in this game, the GTX 580 maintained much smoother performance with 8X MSAA enabled. While GTX 460 1GB SLI had higher framerates, its framerates were all over the place. The change in framerate is noticed by gamers, and it can be quite annoying as you are playing the game and the framerate suddenly drops. The fact is, the GTX 580 not only maintained smoother performance in that game, but also allowed a higher playable setting by further turning on higher AA transparency options.

We experienced this fluctuation in framerate in many games, where the GTX 460 1GB was also pulling in lower minimum framerates. It seems if you want to crank up the AA settings very high, a single GeForce GTX 580 is going to give you more room to do that, and makes those settings useable. If you are running at lower settings however, with lesser amounts of AA, then the GTX 460 1GB SLI may produce higher framerates depending on the game. In F1 2010 we were running at a lower AA setting, 4X AA, but the GTX 580 was still faster, so it isn’t always the case that lower settings means the GTX 460 1GB will be faster.

We have found it to be very game dependent, with no clear pattern on which type of game will allow one video card to provide better performance than the other. The overall feeling we got is that with DX11 games that use more graphics card RAM, the GTX 460 1GB SLI will run into limitations at higher resolutions with AA. The GeForce GTX 580, overall, offers smooth and consistent gameplay at high resolutions with AA in DX11 games. And worth mentioning, with the GeForce GTX 580 you can install a second card to boost framerates well beyond GTX 460 1GB SLI.

First off how many gamers actually play at that resolution? Next to nobody. Second of all, I play at 2048x1152 and I play at max AF quality already with no performance issues on a 24" screen. I have a gtx 260. I am sure if I got another one, at the fraction of the cost of a 460 my performance would even further warrant no need for cards that support a DX level nobody is releasing games for. All this is is a marketing push for nVidia.

HardOCP at their failure again. nVidia pays them well, don't be mistaken about that. It has been a while now, some 2 years or so. I stoped reading them back then.

They are full of shit. They added apples-to-apples just a bit over a year ago because people started questioning their results. Their results are one of the most inconsistent on the web today. Eg. One card performs better in one test and worse in the other few weeks further...they've became pure joke as far as GPU testing goes. It's a shame, they used to be the best.

just look at their lines of text, sli 460 gives better fps overall but 580 is better with some AA here and there, and we all know (those of us who understand technology) that SLI shines in higher resolutions and/or with more AA compared to single GPU solutions. And yet they choose to praise gtx580 over 460 sli in resolutions bellow 2xxx x 1xxxx not to mention that for a price of gtx580 you can get at least three 460 cards...

@TOM:

AF hasn't been a performance hitter since 9800gt...As for gtx460, my price for them here is 160 euros. Gtx260 is 120 euros (no new cards since they are EOL) so you cannot get another one for a fraction of the price. As a matter of fact, one gtx460 is 30% faster than your gtx260 and it costs 30% more. Just right, don't you think? (not to mention cooler, less audible, lower power consumption and dx11 (which neither of us cares about. )) So I think you should give it more thought. I am not saying you should buy it, just give it more thought before you start talking like that. ;)
