Call of Duty: Black Ops PC - MP review - preview|
| (hx) 02:34 AM CET - Nov,13 2010 | The chaps over at ShackNews take a further look at
the online component included in the PC version of Call of
Duty: Black Ops. Here's a taster:
Post Patch Testing:
The best thing I can say about Black Ops after the patch is
that the server browser now functions correctly and
connections actually hold. This was the same on both
machines. The max spec machine still ran smoothly after the patch
geared toward dual and quad core systems. I saw less questionable
replays from the kill cam. Single-player continued to perform well on
my new system.
The min spec machine performed slightly better in some cases
during online matches; however, the game tended to slow to a crawl as
the game progressed and more action was thrown onto the screen. It's
not as bad as a slideshow anymore but sometimes kicks into a weird
flip-book cycle. Which basically translates to a faster slideshow in
some spots. Single-player, however, still hangs for my on my
old machine. As I'm playing, the game doesn't have as many issues but
when the game takes control of my camera (and still in
cinematics) the game pauses frequently. On the subject of lag spikes,
someone at the FPS Admin forums claim that the
reason the game continues to have some issues is due to
real-time stat streaming. The solution, according to the poster, is to
set your game's priority to high in Task Manager. Also, it is
noted that a high upstream helps. I'm connected to cable internet with
a 50 Mbps downstream and a 2 Mbps upstream.
It's becoming increasingly apparent that multiplatform games, when
released on PC, are being scaled back to match the console version.
As I'm speaking specifically to the game's launch, a lot of the
PC-centric content added to Black Ops that was removed from Modern
Warfare 2 didn't work. Server lists wouldn't update correctly. The
game wasn't scaled properly for a variety of PCs--oddly, many of the
people claiming they have no issue at all are running i5 or i7
processors.
I should also note that, for me, the Theater mode
does not work at all (pre or post patch); however, Brian says
that the feature works just fine on his machine. According to both
machines I used for this test, I had no recent games to pull video
from. I'm not entirely sure what the issue is, as it works fine for me
on console. Additionally, and this has nothing to do with any
particular version or the game itself, the Call of Duty website is
broken. This is why I could not provide any detailed per game
breakdown--I wasn't aware it was broken until after I had played the
game for ages.
Having played the game on PC and Xbox 360, I will say
that I feel more comfortable playing it on PC. There are a
few reasons for this, but primarily the game just looks
better on PC. On console, the single-player component looks
great but the multiplayer looks so washed out. Playing the game on the
same monitor on console and then on PC using max settings, I just find
myself performing better with the clarity the PC version provides.

| gx-x | (05:50 AM CET - Nov,13 2010 ) | ofc you will, slow paced gaming, taking time to auto-aim, forgiving gameplay, it's much more relaxed. PC gamers just blow you to bits since you are (by now) used to retirement home paced mp gaming :P
would you join me for a match on Q3 arena live 1v1? I haven't played for over a year, maybe you could catch a frag or two (over my 30 or so) :D
My point being is: console MP versus PC MP is not comparable, at all. Period.
| Tom | (06:20 AM CET - Nov,13 2010 ) | I am level 22 in BO in just 2 nights of play on pc. Maybe 5 hours of play...I am just finished on ps3 at level 17. I got custom everything on both platforms. I bought both platforms because I know nobody who plays PC anymore dude. I am far superior in fps on PC. No debate there.
Last time I touched Q3 was the Live crap, sorry don't have any interest in installing that junk on my pc.
The fact about pc vs console is I can play without issue on console where as on pc, like all the time, I have to wait for patches to play properly. Get it? Tonight on PC 3 aimbotters, console, not one cheat.
BO is the first game in months I bought anything on PC...

Glad to hear it ;)
anyway, the issue with BO on PC is that they transferred net settings from console versions, meaning: lower packet rates etc. That's what I read anyway. If that is true, then we can hardly call that an "PC issue".
| Tom | (05:37 PM CET - Nov,13 2010 ) | | Regardless, I hope they fix the PC version but right now it's not a huge loss because I have just as much fun playing it on console. | |
| gx-x | (01:00 AM CET - Nov,14 2010 ) | | just set packet rate to 20.000 or 30.000, it should be much better (currently it is 3000, that like for a 56K modem :P ). Due to faster play PC needs higher packet rates. | |
| Koogle | (03:34 AM CET - Nov,14 2010 ) | "many of the people claiming they have no issue at all are running i5 or i7 processors."
I guess that'd be why I didn't have any in game performance issues.
anyway good on Tom for buying 2 copies, that can make up for the one I ain't gonna buy! Just got through playing the singleplayer on a steam share. I gotta say is that is some drivel of a storyline, MKUltra, CIA = doing good? lol wicked sick corruption to the core!, they sure do like to rewrite their history through film/game entertainment brainwashing and deception that's for sure.
And WTF is up with the cutscenes, were they designed to cause epileptic seizures or something?!?!? It's like they run out of shit to put in the motion graphics cutscenes, numbers and white flashes *yeh that will make the player feel all drugged up*.. oh and the entire 3d cutscenes are of you strapped in a chair for some weirdly justified American torture. Fucked up, also what kind of moron goes with 'white' background flashes, fades, backdrops for everything...sheesh that is stupid development.. its called 'black' ops aswel 8) maybe you're meant to play it while wearing some agent shit head shades on. These games are getting more like sociopathic.
Anyway Multilayer was naff, same old, seriously COD4 can remain the last game I buy in this series.
