Sony is Removing PlayStation 3 Features - console|
| (hx) 04:56 PM CEST - Mar,29 2010 | Sony has updated the official PlayStation.Blog with word that the April 1st PS3 Firmware v3.21 update will remove the Other OS feature from your system. Bad April Fool's joke? Probably not. The Slim has not supported Other OS since launch. Just seems like Sony wants to make all the console behave the same by removing this feature for Fat users.
The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS†feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS†feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

What sort of fucking fail logic is that?
disabling a feature they already offered to ensure you still get to keep those other features they had on offer when you bought it?
And are PS3 owners like sure thanks?!? regardless of whether you use the feature or not right.. they should be standing up for those who do, instead of letting Sony get away with being slackers and trying to cripple things.
Sony you are in serious need of an ass kicking, please join the Microscum line.
| kephrenz | (11:48 PM CEST - Mar,29 2010 ) | Is this legal ... I mean when I bought my PS3, this was "one" of the very features and they are now disabling it ...
Did I agree this legally ... if not ... anybody can sue Sony for crippling their machine ...
| Koogle | (12:55 AM CEST - Mar,30 2010 ) | quote: on a more secure system
lol more secure for who exactly? its fucking pathetic Sony.
although its not exactly the same, its very much like the BBC who gets funded by tax payers for its shit tv shows, using DRM on its online content, and then saying our partners want better copyright protection.. WHAT FUCKING Partners, oh those partners you used forced overpriced license payers money for shit content, to fund and buy into other studios, and now have a special interest in making some extra off the side money. So are now using that argument to twist the public into thinking its some poor shmuck who didn't get paid for the content they produced.
Seriously lies lies lies twisted fucking lies (actually the BBC is rather at good at lying and propaganda).
Anyway off topic :) Sony = assholes
quote: Did I agree this legally
its probably tied into some 'you agree to anything' clause ... that if Sony at a later date decides has reason to change something in order to suit there own benefit, or for your security ;)
Not that you shouldn't look into suing them with loads of other complainants, they'll get the fucking message not to be fucking around then.
| Sabot | (02:27 PM CEST - Mar,30 2010 ) | Get real guys.
It's a redundant feature that 99.9% average gamers don't even use. Besides it *doesn't* stop the console working nor changes it in anyway that affects gaming -or more importantly, what it was bought to do. play GAMES!! I certainly NEVER bought a PS3 and went wooohooo, i can stick linux on this -more importantly, than gaming. Jesus fuck! That's what i own a PC bloody well for!!!!!!!
Put it this way, how about the Nintendo DS (i own) it can run hacked games by way of the http://www.ishopvideogame.com/r4i-adapter-for-nintendo-dsi-ds-p-1627.html So if Nintendo release a version of the DS (like the newer DS-XL for eg) that doesn't allow the use of this 'legal' device (it clones FULL DS games onto SD cards) Does that make it a crime? It still works as it should out the box, just like the PS3.
So they bring in the ability to transfer DRM content from one PS3 to another and no one gives a fuck about that brilliant ability, nor the fact that you can stick in your own fucking HDD other than an official one like M$ or badges USB stick.
Buy a fucking XBox if you want to see drakonian measures; no FREE mp,Buy an official HDD, no USB features untill now, no dedicated blu-ray player, remotely use your Xbox for downloadable content with the handheld that they DON'T have!
Short memories indeed.
| Ozieo | (05:03 PM CEST - Mar,30 2010 ) | | This is fantastic news for Microsoft indeed. | |
| Tom | (09:57 PM CEST - Mar,30 2010 ) | This is fucking retarded. Getting two stories here. First they say they aren't removing it and now they are?! Like wtf.. who are these fucking RETARDS who make these choices?! Fucking retards everywhere! FFS!
Unlike most generic console gamers I am using Linux and I use it for various server/things. To remove this removes weeks if not really months of work I spent on it. There are also business establishments using the PS3/Other OS feature, they will fuck lots of people over.
Wow this is a real idiotic thing to do. I hope the Sony forums are filled with flames because that's where I'm heading now. F that, they can't just remove it. Security concern? my fucking ass. This is half the reason I have this F'ing thing!
There should be 2 versions of flash to choose from. Wow, I'm major pissed off!!
| Koogle | (11:02 PM CEST - Mar,30 2010 ) | Go go go Tom! give em hell
quote: It's a redundant feature that 99.9% average gamers don't even use.
eerm aside from those figures being silly, fucking over even 0.01% should not acceptable under any circumstances. You seem to think just because its a tiny percentage of users that are using a feature that you don't bother with, makes it ok. Wrong! very wrong
besides I can make up percentages aswel.. here is one... 99.9% of 'average' gamers are nooblets who don't mind accepting crap and getting royally screwed.
quote: So they bring in the ability to transfer DRM content from one PS3 to another and no one gives a fuck about that brilliant ability,
What you think they deserve a pat on the back for something as pathetic as that? Much later on? When its still the encrypted DRM junk that was the problem in the first place.
quote: Buy a fucking XBox if you want to see drakonian measures
Just because I'm on Sony's back on this Bad bad move, doesn't mean I'm now supporting xBlock, already know what that shit is about.
Hotz:
"The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout its lifecycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field."
I hope he fucks them up with some reversed firmware for this stupidly silly sony move, that has already backfired.
| Tom | (05:34 AM CEST - Mar,31 2010 ) | | Quite simply, if they do this I will dump Sony. All my entertainment needs will be from elsewhere. I will go and buy an Xbox 360 and demote my PS3 to some backroom basic streaming server. Only a moron would buy a console where the company keeps stripping and not adding features. Like what's the fucking point? | |
| Sabot | (06:24 PM CEST - Mar,31 2010 ) | Koogle, it's a console, not the end of the world......
Like folk bought the eggbox for say..Hi Def and it didn't come with it, so you bought a dedicated external player for it. then Hi Def died and so did the features of owning an external player. Unless you bought end of the line Hi Def films. So that feature is useless and redundant on that console.
The eggbox only *now* gets USB storage, now that's pathetic. Did it end the console fan base knowing that USB was available since 1995? The PS3 and even PS2 had it as standard. Nope!
No one owns DRM -that's the point of it, when Sony allow you to transfer it to another console you should be fucking happy! Look at the shit the PC puts up with transfering music, games et al. If M$ shut the fucking door on it all it would be a case of FUCK YOU ALL, like it or lump it. Stay or blow, as they already do in certain cases. Perfectly good OS. TOUGH, no longer support it. Stay or GO. Like WHERE DO YOU GO EXACTLY FOR YOUR GAMING?????....... i rest my case.
Sony OWN the console and the firmware, just like M$. If M$ charge for MP (as they do on the eggbox) do people go crying? Clearly not, so if it was a valid case of Sony charging for MP, THEN we would have a clear case to be annoyed BUT since M$ do already where would you go???? It's not a case of the grass is greener on the other side, is it? It's just a case of cut your nose off to spite your face.....
I threw 99.9% as a point, Not ONE person i know uses linux on their PS3 because, and by and large, they want a console for simplicity. That is a fact.
Likewise, you wont buy a PC with a PS3 built into it -unlike the Amstrad days when you got a Megadrive built in!! So with that parody it's a farcical idea to compare apples with oranges.
Linux on portable devices like phones, laptops and dedicated PCs but not the fuck on a PS3 lol.
I use my laptop for the internet, portable photography and film editing. My PC for PC gaming and the internet and my PS3 to get the fuck away from all the above for plug'n'play gaming!.
Why the fuck people associate using a PS3 as a home computer....when they generaly OWN a PC anyway, is beyond me...........i can understand mobile phones doing what a PC can do, but they are portable. There is NOTHING portable about a PS3 and is akin to moving the mountain to the OS... totaly beyond me and only a minority clearly need apply. Emulation, so what? PS2,PC all play old software and can quite easily buy games or download for them and get the hardware to build a legacy machine...
remember the 'install other OS' is a feature, not something you bought! It contained NOTHING and doesn't, in anyway, affect how the device -a console for playing games etc- performs.
People are clearly losing the plot and missing the point of security; some tosser out there -as is always the case, doesn't use the 'install other OS' as they should and therefore abuse it to hack into the HW on the PS3, in that case your grievance is with them and Sony have every right to PROTECT their property.
Do you get the point now? M$ blocked ALL those using HACKED eggboxs that played PIRATED games, it's NOT any different, some of you guys are viewing this with rose tinted specs on. OPEN your EYES!
There's no excuse if it's being abused.
| Tom | (12:11 AM CEST - Apr,01 2010 ) | Sony is the biggest piece of shit on the planet. Fuck them and the rest of their products.
I went out for lunch today, I was originally planning to get a Sony receiver (was $150 reduced) for my basement entertainment system, instead I bought a Pioneer(not on sale). Funny cuz the sales guy was trying to sell me on Sony and I said, I wouldn't take a Sony if you put a gun to my head. Told him about the PS3 bs that's going on and I didn't want to hear another thing about that company. He did just that and sold me on a great Pioneer.
I planned on getting a Sony 46" XBR WS but now I am getting the Samsung one. That's next month. My PS3 will go in the basement and just be a stupid gaming console, nothing more. Upstairs in my main entertainment area, I'm putting an Xbox 360. If worse comes to worse, the PS3 will just become a bluray player and that's it.
| Koogle | (12:12 AM CEST - Apr,01 2010 ) | That is just it Sony are abusing their position, in order to manipulate customers! It's pretty similar to color of law. They aren't directly enforcing you to update, but should you not, you will lose out on functionality you got suckered to pay for! Customers are trapped between a rock and very hard place.
The terms of service wording is very important because it is the one thing that makes it illegal. While it does clearly state that they may remove functionality with a new update at no point does it say they can limit the features of your hardware should you choose not to update!!! This is the key, since they are not given permission to limit your ability to play online or connect to the internet in anyway, this update is illegal because it clearly states if you do not update you won't have internet connectivity. THIS IS THE KEY POINT.
By limiting any function of your ps3 without your consent should you not choose to update they are breaking the law! It is advertised with psn connectivity. By them accepting your money and allowing you to accept the TOS (fucking tossers) they are in essence agreeing to give you access to the psn unhindered. Limiting your ability to connect based on you NOT updating your firmware is not mentioned or advertised anywhere on the box or in the terms of service or EULA. This could render this and actually nearly any update illegal.
quote: some of you guys are viewing this with rose tinted specs on. OPEN your EYES!
What?!?!, since when I have viewed anything with rose tinted specs, I wear cynical specs MAN! ... my eyes are permanently awake to this bullshit.
Stop making this an argument of left or right/ M$ or Sony, they both only have there own monopoly interests in mind. I'm coming from outside of that and don't really care about either, only the customers and future businesses, who they screw and stamp over and stop all the time in order to keep themselves at the top not because of what a good service(unless ur a noob) they provide but because how they control it and prevent anyone else without getting into it, or by taking a large profit cut which keeps them happy.
Now noobs might find this acceptable and reason around it (like well if you just spend more to do the same thing..ergh WRONG!) that the glorious mega corporation have a right to do so, and how its piracy(you want my opinion its because hackers now threaten to fuck them up and things they shouldn't be doing in the first place!), but everytime you do you will get less, and less rights in the future! So stop being a idiot and helping the wrong crowd out and wake up!
Hacking/piracy is not the real problem(it only exists because of the serious greed and anti competitive measures been taken by various multinational industries), if hardware gets anymore encrypted and one sided laws in order to satisfy the greedy fucks that currently run things, there will be no future improvements as things eventually stagnate to just where only those who have the money and trained expertise(only with funding) in order to improve technology, and only for the interests of those who control it. You really only have to look at how much equipment costs in order to reverse engineering hardware locks on microchips, its way out of reach for most to use. From an education point of view not being able to delve into the inside workings software code/hardware seriously limits your understanding of a subject forcing you to take on loans and grants. This is not a bright future path! its a controlled one all about putting society at large into positions of debt.
