Is Console Gaming Dying? - briefly|
| (hx) 02:22 PM CET - Jan,03 2010 | The chaps over at Bit-tech.net have posted an interesting article called 'Is Console Gaming Dying?'. Here's a taster:
Technologically speaking, these are very different times from the previous golden age of consoles, and this is partly due to Microsoft’s development of the original Xbox.Console manufacturers no longer develop their own graphics hardware, but instead rely on PC hardware manufacturers such as Nvidia and ATI to do the job. There’s very little to separate a console from a PC in terms of hardware now, and this is massively different from the days when the SNES had a completely different architecture to a 386 PC.
If you’re using PC hardware, then there’s little need to develop a separate console. All you really gain with a console over a PC is easy setup, a different controller and the knowledge that any game will run without issues. I know a few PC gamers who’ve switched over to consoles because they got fed up with the costs of upgrading, which is fair enough – but let’s not forget that an Xbox 360 wireless adaptor costs £60!
Future tech historians may well laugh at what I’m about to say, but the console as we know it is now obsolete. However, as with PC gaming, this doesn’t mean that console gaming is dying, but rather evolving with the times. I think this console generation will be the last with proprietary, state of the art hardware and physical media, but people will still want easy-to-use gaming systems at home.
If there ever is a PlayStation 4 then it’s going to be very different from the consoles we know now. Instead, with fattening broadband connections, mainstream gaming is probably going to go towards the way of OnLive, where one big bank of hardware can churn out the power needed for broadband-connected gaming machines, without needing to fill a loss-making box with proprietary hardware. In fact, limited bandwidth is the only obstacle to this technology taking off worldwide.

| Tom | (08:05 PM CET - Jan,03 2010 ) | | What an idiotic article. Next generation consoles are gonna kill gaming on PC the way I see it. If mouse and keyboard were common place on consoles the PC would be dead as a gaming platform already. | |
| Cauptain | (12:08 AM CET - Jan,04 2010 ) | Oh it´s really...I up my Pc on 2009, 2000 U$...But I want play Final Fantasy XIII, Ninja Gaiden 2, Uncharted 2, Gears 2, Tekken 6 and others...
Oh wait i´ts only console games?? Yeah...Buy PS3 for it.
The article is most stupid for new 2010.
the magazine editor is "pc saudosist". Sorry guy, PC is cool for games, but consoles is PERFECT.

| Renton | (03:20 PM CET - Jan,04 2010 ) | I'm really curious about if darknothing, Tom and Cauptain actually read the article or just taking a dump only for reading the title.
It doesn't say in any way that consoles are dying per-se, the hardware an applications of the classic consoles are dying. Nowdays they are using components and softwares more like PC's than the consoles of the past (wich is great).
So the consoles of tomorow will be internally a lot more like an actual PC than an old console.
The next PS we already now that is going to be multi-core to be more like it's competitor. The XBOX is almost a PC except for it's IBM CPU.
PS: Cauptain, two things. Gears 2 on PS3? WTF!? To me, consoles are good for gaming and PC's are beyond perfection. But the devs money is in the crapbox and the paystation.
| Tom | (08:11 PM CET - Jan,04 2010 ) | | I read the article I think I just lost interest to even reply fully. LOL! | |
| Sabot | (06:59 PM CET - Jan,05 2010 ) | Strange how the article is done by a person in the UK, yet he complains about console game prices at £39.99? If he had any savy -owning a PS3 or xbox, for both blu-ray movies and games- he would subscribe to lovefilm and get a monthly subcription package (£9.97) which allows a mix of films and games (of your choice on ANY platform other than PC) Keep for as long as you like basicaly forfeiting a rental for eg. If you like either then buy it! Saves hundreds and hundreds of bucks on duff games/films. Doh!!
Lastly, we've always known from the start that that a console (PS3) is a media centre. No brainer. It does more than a standard PC can ever do without a major outlay. Yes it has PC components; but then all games are MADE on a PC anyway, so it has to ressemble a PC.... Gaming in 7.1 TRUE HD sound and blu-ray films in 1080P/24hz 46" SONY Bravia without a SINGLE outlay other than the console, is not exactly what the average xbox/Wii owner does is it? Besides, own a PS3 and it syncs up to the handheld PSP remotely anywhere in the WORLD and syncs up to your TV reciever with just ONE button press! The average 'joe' gamer hardly ever uses the full potential of their console, one reason why HD died a death on the xbox. Bad,bad move by M$ to not make the HD drive standard lol! Buy a PS3 and the blu-ray is already there to be used.
PC sales of games are in dire straights compaired to consoles and that's with a database of MILLIONS! why? Obvious, exactly how many of those MILLIONS of PCs play games on them, as in REAL gaming? Not many when you look at game sales or digital downloads. Quite shocking realy and consoles are 'not doing well'? I said this eons ago, more 40+year old adults use a PS3 for a home cinema entertainment system than JUST for games.
Consoles have evolved (namely the PS3), the guy is BLIND because he DOESN'T own one! Therefore he talks bull about seperate wireless adapters for his xbox costing £60, NO HD/Blu-Ray capability -except downloads which both console do but only ONE plays the genuine article as the director intended at 24fps. and it has wireless as standard........what a plonker.
If M$ had all the features of the PS3; free MP,Blu-Ray, hand-held compatibility, standard HDD etc, etc, etc then i would have bought it. but it DOESN'T!
If the guy could speek relative on ALL terms -as in owning ALL consoles or doing PROPER reasearch into the pros/cons of each- then fair enough, but to try and debate without doing so is just asking for to be shot down in flames -which he has just been!!
