What PC Gamers Need To Know About Windows 7 - tech|
| (hx) 12:23 AM CEST - Oct,07 2009 | If you are a PC gamer, chances are you have already tried out the release candidate for Windows 7 or are waiting for the final release. But there may be some things that you don't know about Windows 7 that you need to be aware of before making that final upgrade. BigDownload has a few items that you may need to keep in mind:
Don't expect a lot of DirectX11 titles at first
The launch of Windows 7 also brings the launch of DirectX11, the next version of Microsoft's 3D graphics API. (Vista will also support DirectX11 but so far there's no word on when an update to the OS will happen). You can expect even more realistic looking games with more special effects to come from DirectX11 titles. However, gamers shouldn't expect DirectX11 games to be flooding the market overnight.
At the moment there is only one official DirectX11 game out there; the free-to-play RTS game BattleForge (via a recent patch). More games are expected to be released in the coming months including Dirt 2 (due this December) and Aliens vs Predator (due out in the first quarter of 2010). Even if you have Windows 7 and the DirectX11 supported game you still need a DirectX11-supported video card to see the new effects. At the moment, AMD is the only manufacturer of such cards via the ATI Radeon 5800 series. Don't expect a DirectX11-supported card from its main rival Nvidia until sometime in 2010.

| Sabot | (05:19 PM CEST - Oct,07 2009 ) | Don't forget glorious Direct X 10.1, now that release was mind blowing.....ly forgot about.
When they -sometime in the next million years, when all the fat cats are dead from choking on their wads- release an 'all in one' GPU card that doesn't need a CPU,mobo,RAM and we're all on the same level playing field, without stupid fps fluctuations because of CPU/GPU 'moments'. That's what got on my tits, a game that used CPU more than GPU when you owned a Graphics card that turned out 100+ fps maxed out in games coded for more GPU. Pissing in the wind with the PC is what it's all about these days.. Hell, check out the friggin' mess that is the Empire Total War forums regarding hardware liquidisation! dual core, quad core, SLI, doesn't mean a monkeys left nut if the codings crap!
