 TechNews - Windows 7 Mania - tech
(hx) 06:24 PM CEST - Sep,03 2009
  • 4-Way SSD Round-Up Redux: OCZ, Corsair, PhotoFast - They are giving the OCZ Vertex Turbo Series drive a strong recommendation.
  • Western Digital announces 2TB Black HDD - Western Digital announced that it's now shipping 2-terabyte 7200 RPM drives for hardware enthusiasts and workstation PCs, the WD Caviar Black 2TB and the WD RE4 2TB respectively. Both drives sport 64MB of cache, 500GB platters, 3Gb/sec SATA, and 5-year warranties, with the Caviar Black 2TB retailing for $299 (pricing for the RE4 2TB wasn't announced.
  • Windows 7: Understanding Windows 7 upgrade paths - There are a couple more things worth noting here. While you can't perform a direct update from Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, there is simple a workaround: You can run an in-place upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, and then use Windows Anytime Upgrade to move up to Professional for an additional $90. The total upgrade cost amounts to $210, which is $10 more than a direct upgrade but still better than buying a full Professional license at $300.
  • Throw a Windows 7 house party and get a free copy - Microsoft is looking for some Windows 7 fans to throw launch parties between October 22-29. You can apply for the competition and if selected you'll not only receive a special "Signature Edition" of Windows 7 Ultimate but your very own Windows 7 Party Pack - woo! Microsoft wants you to hold parties in the following countries: Australia, Italy, Canada, Japan, Mexico, France, Spain, Germany, USA, Hong Kong, UK and India. If you're interested in throwing a party then apply now as spaces are limited.
  • Windows 7 Enterprise 90 Day Evaluation Now Available - For those of you that haven't downloaded a 'try before you buy' version of Windows 7 yet, you only have a limited time left to do so. Microsoft is offering a 90 day trial version of Windows 7 but there are only a limited number of licenses are available "while supplies last."
  • Windows 7 will give your laptop longer battery life - When comparing two identical laptops one with Windows XP SP2, the other with Windows 7, the Windows 7 machine was able to last 1.4 hours longer than the XP machine while playing a DVD.
  • Opera 10 is Out - Yeap, that's right. True to its word, Opera has gone ahead and made the public, final version of its latest release available worldwide, bringing some slick new changes which are bound to make some folk rather happy. It took a surprisingly short time for Opera to bring their browser from Release Candidate to the release version... the RC was out on August 25, and of course, it's only September now, so the pre-release version had been out on the market for less than a week. Here are some of the improvements found, which were in the Release Candidate version (but of course are in the final, too):
  • Skype Spy Trojan Escapes into Wild - Only days after Swiss programmer Ruben Unteregger released the source code for a Trojan he wrote three years ago to hack Skype phone calls, the inevitable has happened -- someone has released it as a compiled piece of 'faux' malware
  • Snow Leopard Incompatibilities - Incompatibilities with Apple software? Surely you must be kidding, I could swear the motto was something like "it just works." ;-)
  • Sneak Peek at Firefox Mulitouch - Mozilla intern Felipe Gomes is showing off multitouch support for Firefox.
  • Windows Phones set to launch on October 6 - Microsoft has taken the wraps off its Windows Phone schedule today with the confirmation of Windows Mobile 6.5 devices for October 6, 2009. Microsoft re branded Windows Mobile to Windows Phone earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress. The idea is to re-focus marketing on the products so that consumers are not confused at what they are purchasing and that they are aware they have a Windows powered phone.
  • Buster Bros to Burst Bubbles on Apple iPhone (video) - The great thing about the Apple iPhone and other similar handhelds is that they provide the perfect platform for gaming nostalgia. If you go back into the 80s and 90s, you'll find that the arcade cabinets of the day were no more powerful than what we hold in our smartphones today. Well, another classic is on its way to the App Store and bubble-attackers couldn't be happier :-)
  • Beautiful Trailer for Chow Yun-Fat's Confucius - The life story of the highly-influential Chinese thinker and philosopher, Confucius, who lived from 551 BC to 479 BC during the Zhou Dynasty in China. His teachings have deeply influenced life in most of Asia. It does not currently have a US distributor. Stay tuned!
Badass Trailer for Woody Harrelson's Defendor! - Reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington, a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor, and combs the streets at night in search of his arch-enemy, Captain Industry.
  • Slow Motion Sneezing (video) - Wow! Don't ever let anyone sneeze near you! ;-)

SSD drives are way overpriced. I'll wait for the prices to drop 75%. No way I'm paying crazy amount they are asking.
