Do or Die for id Software - briefly
(hx) 02:30 PM CEST - Jul,20 2009
In this article Gameplayer looks at the current state of id Software, and why they need to start delivering the gameplay and tech it has long been promising now.
The freakily scary, but far less revolutionary Doom 3 (2004) remains the only notable development project for id Software in the last decade. It has basically been acting as a publisher to a host of so-so spin-off titles; think Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001), Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (2005), Doom RPG (2005), Orcs & Elves (2006), Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (2007) and Wolfenstein (2009). Not even the last addition in the legendary Quake series was a dedicated hands-on affair, with Raven Software taking credit for 2005’s lukewarm Quake 4.

Well there is no doubt that it is time to deliver. We need to see id Tech 5 in full swing. We need to see genuine gameplay footage of the still in development RAGE and the announced but secretive Doom 4. We need to hear of other developers jumping at the chance to get in on its exciting new middleware. We need hope. And you get bet your original sealed box copy of Doom that new owner Zenimax will expect to see results, and see ‘em soon. Because with new stable-mate kicking goals with Elder Scrolls IV and Fallout 3, id are at serious risk of running a distant second at its new home, and furthermore, of watching a whole generation of gamers come and go without ever knowing the true awesomeness of id.

With that said, we have good news. It appears that the RAGE is starting to make a reappearance and could be something more than a tech demo for the new engine, as some had begun to fear. Check out these scans from the awesome Game Informer - let’s hope that this marks a proactive return to the big leagues for the developer and that its third decade can prove as mind-blowing as its first.
