Fallout 3 Nears Completion; Over 200 endings! - briefly
(hx) 08:50 AM CET - Mar,25 2008
PC.IGN reports that Fallout 3 nears completion, and that it has over 200 alternate endings to the game. The game, which is now set to span anywhere up to 100 hours of your time, is still firmly on schedule for the Fall.
One of the biggest and perhaps most impressive pieces of information is that the game has far surpassed the dozen or so endings it was originally set to have. "Being that we are Bethesda, everything gets a bit big, so as of last week we were over 200 endings," said Howard. However he does acknowledge that figures like these do tend to get tossed around a lot for the sake of PR, "...that is not an exaggeration, but it deserves some description. Yeah...200 endings...that's a lie of some kind! So originally when we started there were various iterations of the endings, and the ending is kind of cinematic that's dynamic based on the things you've done. Well there's at least 9 maybe 12 [original endings] but we kept adding things to it," Howard said whenever somebody pitched a good idea for an ending to the team, the team would be very excited about the proposition, and would expand and build upon that ending, which would only lead to more alternate endings. Sounds crazy? Howard agrees, "It gets kind of stupid."

Bethesda seems to be very open to new ideas, "The games... when they start on paper, are a lot smaller, and we can't stop ourselves... If we think they're good [ideas] and they fit the tone, we're going to jam in as much as possible... Fallout is probably twice the size that we originally had on paper." Even with all of this taken into consideration, 200 endings? Bethesda is trying to make the ending (and the game does have a definite ending) as tailored to your journey as it possibly can be. In addition, Howard said your decisions and karma would affect scenes you see throughout the game.

200 endings. Ok, there's replayability for you :P

Interesting hype, I'm getting more and more excited about this sequel.
I hope the excitement is paid with an incredibly satisfying gaming experience when it is finally released.

If it isn't, I'll put on some Tin Foil Armor, sneak up to the Beth HQ and bash the walls with an Ikea Hammer. That should do around 259 damage, the hammer adds +%5 Structure Damage. I'll shush now.

200 endings?

Ok its a 360 game from Beth, let me guess.

Ending 1 = Wearing red boots.
Ending 2 = Wearing red boots with a silver stripe.
Ending 3 = Wearing red boots with green heals.
Ending 4 = Wearing darker red boots.
Ending 5 = Wearing darker red boots with a silver stripe.
etc
etc
Ending 103 = Wearing Orange Helmet with walnuts attached.
etc
etc

Sorry, I know I'm being pessimistic but I just don't trust any developers any more.

It'll probably be something like the endings for Temple of Elemental Evil.

You see an assortment of still images or cards that vary depending on what you did throughout the game. Kinda crude, but it works.

I can't imagine what other way they could do it and have 200 completely different endings.

The game technically ends when your character dies.
They also probably have different screens when you quit from the menu etc. I'm sure a crash to desktop is also considered an ending as well...

I'll bet you $5 that the CTD from Oblivion when running big mods will still occur even with Fallout 3.
I'll bet a further $5 that the guys that made the Unofficial Oblivion Patch fixing around 1000+ glitches will end up discovering an equally embarrasingly large amount of glitches.
Maybe they'll release a Collectors Edition with a free rusted desert eagle and bottle cap.
It's fun to speculate

Badmagic, your post was great :D
