Gears of War PC Ships - briefly
(hx) 09:37 AM CET - Nov,07 2007
Microsoft Game Studios announced the PC edition of Gears of War has shipped to retailers worldwide and will be in stores this week:
In addition to retaining all of the content from its Xbox 360 counterpart and all previously released downloadable content (seven multiplayer maps and the Annex game mode), "Gears of War" for Windows will feature exciting original content, all-new Achievements to unlock and ultra-high resolution visuals, including support for DirectX 10. Five new campaign chapters expand upon the riveting story (including an epic battle with the fearsome Brumak), and the action-packed multiplayer offering is bolstered with three exclusive multiplayer maps, a "King of the Hill" game type and Games for Windows - LIVE support to deliver online matchmaking for LIVE members. A new game editor will allow users to develop an unlimited number of user-created levels with complete access to the Unreal Engine 3 Editor.
And like all good PC games, it's launched with a problem. Namely, when you pop it in, Games for Windows Live updates itself, only to hit a snag and be unable to complete the update. There's two ways to get around this. 1) The easiest is to simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you'll know it's safe because you'll be back at the main menu, and not on the "Don't shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded" screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you're good to go. 2) If you can't manage the one above hit this link for more details. (thanks Gwarrior)

In other news, The chaps over at HardOCP have published a benchmark article in which they test some of the top video cards, compare its use of DirectX 10 to DirectX 9.

i have an 8800 gts 320m, i get a steady framrate of 50 (1680x1040) dx10.. so im not sure about that review... dx 10 isnt the best for most games, gears is one of those games that you dont need dx10, but for the most part,

dx10 is new, 8800 are new, when they had dx8,9 the cards wernt the best, just wait for the new dx10 cards to come out and we will see better performance.
