TechNews - Radeon HD 2900 Pro benchmarked - tech|

- AMD rumored to release an Athlon 5000+ Black Edition -
The processor would be built on 65nm and be clocked at the 'regular'
2.6GHz and have 1MB of L2 cache, the same as the non-Black Edition version
but, it will differentiate itself by having an unlocked multiplier.
- Nvidia to release four nForce 700 series chipsets in November -
Nvidia will be releasing the nForce 780a and 750a , the first being the
highest-end offer, with support for three PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots while
the latter will boast only two such slots. Both will support AM2+ and AM2
processors and will come with DDR2-1066-ready modules. On the Intel front,
the C72 chipsets have finally received their 'official' names, nForce 780i
(C72 XE) and nForce 750i (C72 P), both featuring support for Intel's
upcoming 45nm processors and DDR2 memory.
- MSI P35 Diamond Mobo Tested -
Good board with
fantastic stability and great performance, but it still doesn't
represent good value for money.
- Radeon HD 2900 Pro benchmarked - PCLab's benchmarks include
3DMark06, F.E.A.R., Prey, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and The Elder Scrolls IV:
Oblivion. In the four game tests,
the 2900 Pro is
on average about 19% slower than the full-blown Radeon HD 2900 XT at
stock speeds.
- HP w2207 22-inch LCD Monitor Tested -
The screen
measures in a 22-inches diagonally and has a native resolution of 1680 x
1050 at 60Hz. The contrast ratio is 1000:1 and the brightness is up to 300
nits
- Western Digital RE2 750GB Hard Drive Tested -
The RE2 may even
be a better alternative than a 10K-RPM Raptor
- Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 - This service pack is
hardly of 117.7 Mb but Microsoft says it to be an important update to
Microsoft Office 2003 Service pack 2 so everyone using Ms Office 2003 must
download and update it (changelog)
- FileZilla 3.0.1 -
FileZilla is powerful Open Source FTP/SFTP client with many features. It
includes a site manager to store all your connection details and logins as
well as an Explorer style interface that shows the local and remote folders
and can be customized independently.
- Recuva 1.05.118 -
Recuva (download)
is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally
deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin
as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from
digital camera memory cards or MP3 players.
- Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta sent to testers -
SP1 Beta comes in both 32 and 64bit versions and according to Brandon
LeBlanc, it brings a few speed improvements and it takes out the search
option from the Start Menu. The Vista GUI hasn't received any major updates
but the whole idea with SP1 was to fix bugs and give the OS and applications
running on it a boost. The final version of Vista Service Pack 1 is still
slated for Q1 2008.
- Blu-ray/HD DVD War to Last Another 18 Months -
A stand alone
Blu-ray player sells for about $500, while HD DVD players cost about
$400, and prices are expected to drop further as the holiday shopping season
nears.
- Apple: unlock may damage, void warranty - The company said that
unlocking an
iPhone may render an iPhone useless after applying future software
updates.
