- Weighing the value of today's processors - CPU round-up -
Intel's Core 2
Quad Q6600 receives an honorable mention for being the best overall
choice for users more focused on performance than on saving money-though
still concerned about both. In the same playing field, AMD's Quad FX
platform fails to impress, and Intel's quad-core Core 2 Extreme chips are
just too expensive.
- Core 2 Duo E6750 Overclocking -
With this
overclocking the overall performance measured by PCMark05 increased 4.77%
while the CPU score provided by this program increased 13.48%. On Quake 4
the performance remained the same.
- Intel Ships Over 1 Million Quad-core CPUs -
It seems to me
that AMD really needs to price Barcelona quite a bit above the $266 Q6600
in order to recover R&D investments and to generally become profitable
again. But it seems like Intel's pricing is not going to allow that to be
possible
- Mysterious Intel Celeron tested -
InsideHW came up with a review of a processor that does not exist. At
least not at the moment. The processor in question is an Intel processor
based on the Conroe-L core, so it is probably a Celeron of some kind.
- Samsung 19" Syncmaster 940UX USB / DVI / VGA LCD Tested -
Everything USB posted a review on the Samsung 19" Syncmaster 940UX
monitor.
- Total HD Delayed -
The hybrid disc that would feature Blu-ray on one side and HD DVD on the
other has been delayed until next year. Warner cited the desire to have a
better cache of movies available.
- AT&T Enhances EDGE Network Ahead of iPhone Launch -
AT&T confirmed
that it spent $50 million to improve its EDGE data network just before
the iPhone launch.

- Apple's iPhone makes it to stores -
Apple's much-hyped iPhone handset goes on sale across the US, after
thousands queued for hours
- iPhone Stress Tests - Can you scratch it? What happens when you
drop it? PC World's
Eric Butterfield takes the iPhone through a gruelling set of tests to
check how the device handles abuse. In other news, Engadget has posted
iPhone first hands-on video in High Definition. Finanly, in this
article,
AnandTech was able to strip the Apple iPhone of its brushed aluminum cover
and reveal its innards. Inside the iPhone, there are the usual GSM and WiFi
antennas, battery, camera and tape. Apple equips the iPhone with Samsung MLC
NAND flash memory and an ARM processor. The ARM processor was manufacture by
Samsung, but has an Apple logo printed on it. AnandTech believes the Apple
branded ARM processor may be the Samsung S3C6400 derived from an ARM1176
core. Another 'disassembling an iPhone' photo-article can be found
here.
- Google Maps: Change Directions - If you are an avid Google Map
user like I am, you’ll appreciate the
new ability to change your route on the fly with a new drag and drop
ability
- Military Running a Parallel Earth Simulator - The US
Department of Defense (DOD)
may already be creating a copy of you in an alternate reality. Putting
supercomputers to an innovative use, the military is simulating our planet
in an effort to predict the outcome of different scenarios. They might run
tests to see how long 'you' can go without food or water, or how 'you' will
respond to televised propaganda. Billions of nodes are created in the
system, intended to reflect every man, woman, and child. 'Called the
Sentient World Simulation (SWS), it will be a "synthetic mirror of the real
world with automated continuous calibration with respect to current
real-world information", according to a concept paper for the project.
- 'Space hotel' test craft launched -
An experimental
spacecraft was launched into orbit for testing purposes. If the
technology is successful we could see an inflatable space station as early
as 2015
