Xbox 360 vs PS3: Back to the Drawing Board - briefly|
| (hx) 11:36 PM CET - Dec,26 2006 | Firing
Squad's Alan Dang compares the Xbox 360 against the PlayStation 3. Here's an
excerpt:
Sony will lose market share due to increases in popularity from Microsoft and
Nintendo. As a gamer, the Xbox 360 is the clear choice. It's easily
available, relatively cheap, and offers a true next-generation experience.
The balanced development environment will ensure a steady stream of releases,
and Microsoft's aggressive Japanese investments (Tecmo, Mistwalker, Capcom) will
likely help establish the brand in Asia. Microsoft will always have the price
advantage over the PS3, and I would expect some aggressive promotions by E3
2007.
The Wii will do better than the Gamecube but will not be able to compete
as effectively as the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the enthusiast market. Yes, the Wii is
great, and yes, it's affordable, and yes, it's completely sold out. The problem
and strength with the Wii is that it's designed to introduce "non-traditional
gamers" to consoles. That's great and all, but once you've gotten them excited
about the Wii, these non-traditional gamers are unlikely to be as passionate
about games as PS3/Xbox 360 owners will be. In the same way the DDR Revolution
and Katamari Damacy eventually fizzled out, so will the Wii. It's not that the
Wii isn't awesome... it's that the Xbox 360 and PS3 will still be dominant.
The real wild card in this final third of the decade will be the PC. The PC
has quickly reestablished its dominance in hardware superior - faster than any
other console product launch cycle. As advanced as the Xenon and Cell
processors are, it's always the GPU that improves the most quickly. As fast as
the GeForce 8800 GTX is today, we know that a year from now, AMD and NVIDIA
will have even faster flagship products, and cards like the 7950GT will be even
cheaper and more mainstream. Likewise, Microsoft will continue to push DX10
gaming in their efforts to maintain a desktop entertainment platform that's
ahead of the MacOS competition.

As long as the Wii continues down the DS path of appealing to a new market while still catering to tried and tested formulas I think it has great possibilities. Sure it won't compete directly to the 360 and PS3 but if you think its not capable of drawing numbers as high you might want to see what alternative software anf markets have done for DS sales.
360 has a great potential to leave Sony in the dust but they seem content to be in the lead and only counter blows Sony throws rather than rip out their throats. This might maximise their profits now but Sony isn't going to be stupid forever and at some point they'll have a killer app or feature that MS just won't be able to beat. Really, I think MS should look hard at reviewing its hardware configurations, bump up the specs a little on the storage side, maybe chuck in a built-in HD-DVD system and then drop the prices. Getting a Core for $250 with a 60Gig hard drive is quite nice. $350 for a wireless version and 200 gig hard drive and then doing a full HD-DVD system with perhaps the HDMI built in for $450 could slay Sony. Letting Sony slowly reach that critical mass user level before making such a choice could be very costly in the end.
Sony, well they've screwed it and I shed no tears for them after the perpetual hype and BS they dished out during the PS2's lifespan I guess karma is a bitch after all. First half of 2007 we'll see if the system is going to move in any great numbers. Then the developers will speak more on whether the exclusives are going to remain that way. Sony had better get some polished AAA titles out and fast because the POWER! mantra looked tired back at E3 '05 and all they've managed to do since is copy Live! and the WiiMote. | |
| Ravenheart | (04:33 PM CET - Dec,29 2006 ) | | Sony need to stfu and start making developing tools for the PS3 AND release something to fight XNA Express Edition. | |
