Duke Nukem Forever Staff Exodus? - briefly
(hx) 10:03 AM CEST - Aug,31 2006
Shacknews is reporting that some ten "key" developers have left 3D Realms' Duke Nukem team recently:
Developers confirmed to have left 3D Realms since last December include Scott Alden, Will Bate, Brian Cozzens, Kyle Davis, Andy Hanson, Keith Schuler, and Charlie Wiederhold. Some of the former employees headed up crucial game systems such as physics, animation, and rendering. Notably, Schuler is a sixteen year veteran of Apogee and 3D Realms. Our sources indicate that while the game's team has reached a size of about 24-28 developers, recently it has been closer to 18, meaning these current departures may actually comprise a majority of the team. Several sources have indicated that further information regarding these matters is expected next week.

3D Realms' George Broussard, who heads up the Duke Nukem Forever project, is known to hold a perfectionist attitude towards the game, which is in large part responsible for its many delays. The game has been revamped with new engines multiple times, further prolonging development time as game assets and levels have had to be rebuilt. Some sources speculate that, unless major changes are made to the development process, the game may never see the light of day. A Prey-like rebirth under a new developer supervised by 3D Realms may be a potential consideration, but descriptions from those close to Broussard suggest that he would be unlikely to approve such a direction.
They also have learned that four of the employees named above--Brian Cozzens, Kyle Davis, Keith Schuler, and Charlie Wiederhold--are now working for Brothers in Arms series developer Gearbox Software. Wiederhold's employment at Gearbox was already public knowledge. These four employees were key members of the Duke Nukem Forever team and led various aspects of development.

Update: George Broussard has made an interesting post on the ShackNews forums:
Physics and animation systems are virtually finished and shippable. It's simply maintenance and polish from here on out. We haven't needed to make substantial changes to those systems in months. The changes we have made, were made without great effort. Things are never as bleak as they appear, as is often the case when you simply have one side of the story.

I'm glad to see that Shack is now a major investigative new source. I alone, have secret insider info on half the developers in the industry and their secret unannounced projects, their departures, layoffs and other internal politics. If you really want to open up the site to being the next BitchX or FatBabies, it shouldn't be too hard to solicit reputable sources (anon developers or their friends) to provide you with all the information you need. It's all 'news' :)

Looks like an angry little boy posted that at Shack with the overused cliche recap of 3D Realms and DNF... So what if developers left, developers have left the DNF project many times, whats so new about this time? Maybe they are only pulled in to do a certain part?? Maybe they couldn't do what they were asked to do? I just read the Shack news article and it seems more like a rant than anything else.. I have a lot of respect for 3D Realms, Prey was a good game afterall, it was entertaining and despite what some reviews out there say, it was damn original, funny and had a decent story. I also liked the ability to fly in it as well. You don't see that highlighted that much in the reviews.. just reviewers selectively choose what things will 'make' a game or breaks it. The inclusion of flying in one game can get a game a great mark then in something like Prey, umm huh? flying? ya so? Prey you weren't just a normal simple homo like Gordon Freeman who is a mute and boring and ugly. Prey was a really good quality release and very short on bugs. Prey to me, based on the other garbage out there, easy 9.5/10 and I'd only take off .5 cuz the MP is a little bland even if you could go flipping and through portals etc.. Maybe I haven't played it enough, but it would have been cool to fight in those little pods..

anyhow.. thats my rant..
