Test Drive Unlimited Impressions (Xbox 360/PC) - preview|
| (hx) 10:52 AM CEST - Aug,11 2006 |
Team
Xbox has posted its impressions of
Test Drive Unlimited, the upcoming massively multiplayer multiplayer online
racing game set in Hawaii. Like in an online role-playing game, these players
are free to explore their surroundings at will, or they can engage in races with
other players in order to win cash and progress further. The PC port, developed
by Eden Studios, will be released this fall following the Xbox 360 version's.
If you're a short attention-span gamer, finding a race is as easy as getting
close to another car and flashing your headlights, which puts the two of you
into an instant challenge. But the multiplayer's appeal will be in the setting
up custom races, which contains the highest degree of flexibility. Quickly
creating a race is simply a matter of moving a cursor to a start point,
clicking, moving to an end point (you have to make a course at least a mile in
length) and then clicking again. On top of that, you can set how many
checkpoints you want and other parameters to vary the challenge. With hundreds
of miles of roadway available, there's essentially an infinite number of courses
you can create.
One concern has to do with the car handling. Though, in all fairness, Test Drive
Unlimited is still a work-in-progress-and Atari said that it and developer Eden
Games have been spending countless hours testing and balancing the game-a
long-running observation has been that the driving wasn't up to the same quality
as the game's graphics and depth. The latest play session still felt like the
car physics and steering aren't spot on, but we're hoping that the remaining
development time will polish up the rough spots.
