Call of Duty 3 Impressions - console
(hx) 12:22 PM CEST - Jul,11 2006
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii
The chaps over at IGN has posted their impressions of Call of Duty 3, the upcoming WWII sequel for next-gen consoles. Currently being developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty 3 is scheduled for a fall 2006 release on Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox, and PS2. That's right, no PC version this year.
A few more tidbits include the inclusion of soft cover points, dynamic enemy AI fronts, more useful smoke grenades, and sticky grenades. Soft cover points mean when you slink down behind what you assume an impenetrable stone wall, it can actually be blown away by enemy attacks. Enemies know that too, and will force you out into the open. Also, Activision said enemies will act more like a team, pulling back in groups if they're getting overwhelmed instead of individually charging forward to get annihilated one by one. Grenades can be cooked too, which is always a good idea unless you're keen on the idea of enemies tossing them back in your face. In an attempt to escape the linearity of its predecessor, CoD3 will include branching mission paths, though we didn't actually see much evidence of this in the short demo.

Activison then busted out a brief multiplayer video, and it's clear there have been a number of changes with this area. First off, there are now a number of character classes, each with specific weapons and abilities. Light and Heavy Assault gunners carry around anti-personnel mines in addition to their standard weaponry. Riflemen can fire off a limited number of rifle grenades. Support and Anti-Armor Support classes can drop ammunition refill packs for squad mates. A Medic drops health packs and can revive fallen comrades, and Scouts can call in precision artillery strikes. As an incentive to use the class specific skills, players will actually get points for successfully implementing them which will stack with their kill counts. To anyone who's every played Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, this system should sound very familiar.
