Sony UK: "PS3 will come in at GBP 425" - console|
| (hx) 06:10 PM CEST - May,18 2006 | Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Ray Maguire has revealed
that PlayStation 3 will retail for GBP 425 when it launches in the UK on
November 17th, but has defended the price point as "a bargain" for consumers.
I don't think it's an expensive machine; I think actually, it's probably a
cheap machine," he commented. "If you think a Blu-Ray player by itself might be
GBP 600-700, and we're coming in at just GBP 425 - it's a bargain."
"The point is that most people don't realise what they're actually getting
with PlayStation 3," he said. "Number one, it's a games machine and we all know
that. But also it's a high definition video playback device through Blu-Ray, and
a lot of people don't really understand that part of the functionality either.
There's a big story to tell people and a lot of information to be taken on
board."
In other news, DFC Intelligence says
steep price
tag will prevent next-gen platform from rapidly building installed base--which
will give developers pause. Indeed, DFC says that the PS3's high price will
make--or has already made--many consumers side with a next-gen rival. "With a
$200 price difference now announced, consumers that were sitting on the fence
can feel free to go buy an Xbox 360," read the report.
Along with the price, DFC reasons that the 360's stout software lineup will
be another factor possibly causing consumers to shy away from the PS3. "In terms
of game software it currently looks like the Xbox 360 will be able to match the
PS3 punch-for-punch in the important genres like shooting, RPGs, racing, sports,
Grand Theft Auto IV and others," asserts DFC. "Will Sony's brand name alone
explain a $200 price difference to the gaming audience?" |

There speaks a man who's paid too much.
| devilhood | (03:09 PM CEST - May,20 2006 ) | 425 quid for what it offers, on the top-spec side of things is actually a very reasonable.
Not quite a bargain in console terms though.
Console though? everything is an inevitable hybrid-mix-thing now, the Wii is probably more of a console than anything else at the moment.
| v1m | (12:29 PM CEST - May,21 2006 ) | At least in the US, Sony's timing could hardly be worse. The housing market is tanking, and with it goes (among other things) the equity credit that's driven retail spending sprees for the past five years. Their credit cards maxed out, the dollar falling and the price of gas rising, Americans won't have the dough for a $500-$600 PS3. A recession will squeeze lots of things, especially luxury console sales.
As for troubled Sony, it's facing serious economic consequences if it doesn't move a lot of PS3 units fast. Desperate jobs-slashing mega-corp tries to woo cash-poor over-charged consumers with a pricey boutique toy; good luck!
