Sony reveals PlayStation 3 launch date & price - console|
| (hx) 09:54 AM CEST - May,09 2006 |
In a press conference at E3 on Monday, Sony Computer Entertainment finally
announced the launch date and pricing for its upcoming PlayStation 3 console.
SCE America President and CEO Kazuo Hirai said the console would launch in two
flavors on November 11 in Japan and on November 17 in North America and
Europe. The cheapest version of the console will feature a 20GB hard drive
and will retail for $499 in the U.S., 499 in Europe, and $549 in Canada. A
variant with a 60GB hard drive will also ship for $599 in the U.S., 599 in
Europe, and $659 in Canada. Hirai did not mention any differences other than
the extra storage space between the $499 and $599 flavors.
In addition to the launch and pricing information, Sony also revealed
the
PlayStation 3's new "redesigned" controller. While the controller looks
virtually identical to the current PS2 controller, user wrist movements can also
be translated into onscreen movement. In a demonstration, a virtual duck was
made to jump out of the water by moving the controller upwards. Sony is
following in the footsteps of Nintendo, which has opted for a one-handed motion
sensitive controller for its Wii console.
Update: IGN just posted this comparison detailing the differences between the two controllers. |

$599 PS3 has 60GB HDD, 1 x HMDI (not 2), wifi, CF/SD/MS slots, 4 x USB2, GbE, Bluetooth, digital audio out.
$499 PS3 has 20GB HDD, 4x USB2, GbE, Bluetooth, digital audio out.
No HDMI (so no 1080p and no HDCP), no wifi, no card slots.
Apparently the cheapest version ($499) will only have support at 720p for Blu-Ray discs
| nb411 | (11:01 AM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | | I wish they just made one good one that works with everything and just ignored the bitching about the price. If you can afford to buy it for $500 and it costs $600 then it will come down to $500 in year or less. I would much rather full quality content across the board instead of appealing to peoples impatience when it comes to cost. It just leads to lowest common denominator-ness and creates confusion. | |
| miglaugh | (02:38 PM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | | Either way, sign me up for the $600 one... WOOT!!!! atleast it's not 900 like everyone was thinking. | |
| Smiley_ie | (03:51 PM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | | Where are they getting €599.00 & $599.00 , €599.00 is 760.00 dollars ? | |

Yeah, $599 in the U.S., €599 in Europe...
In the US, the prices are presented excluding the Sale tax (about 7-9%) that is added to the price. In Europe the shown price allways include VAT (15-25 %). Please correct me if I'm wrong...
| lmer | (04:32 PM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | The price alone is allready an entertainment. Microsoft has the strategy to accumulate the profit loss of console production via Live, Game licencing and so on, but Sony obviously decided that they should start with a insulting price, wait till the gullable guys and gals grab it, and when the sales begin to decline, lower the price to a point of reason.
Here's annother theory Billy, whatcha think? ;)

| El_Coyote | (07:40 PM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | eeehh.. what happened to the design of the case and controller that actually looks good?
that one looks like rubbish...
| devilhood | (08:33 PM CEST - May,09 2006 ) | I wasn't a huge fan of the boomerang style controller, although I wanted to reserve judgment until I tried it for myself.
I feel safe knowing they modernized the standard PS2 controller design a little, because it is quite simply the best controller (apart from the snes one heheh) :P
