 Prey preview - preview
(hx) 08:05 PM CET - Feb,02 2006
1UP.com have posted an extensive preview of Prey, the upcoming first person shooter from 3D Realms. Here's a slice:
Not only can the A.I. use the environment, it understands how to move, react and fire through portals and all the shifting planes of gravity. Furthermore, it will react to how you're doing in the game. Prey incorporates a dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) system to keep the game tuned to your ability. One of the overlooked parts of these new systems is the challenges they pose to the A.I. routines. In order to work, the A.I. must be more sophisticated than a simple trigger-and-response system. The DDA will also make adjustments to things like health drops and ammo supply to tailor the game to your play.

And Tommy should be up to the challenge, whether he likes it or not. Since it is the Doom 3 engine the first thing you need to know is yes, he has a light. His trusty Zippo is at the ready to light up a decent-sized area around him at any time. Silly, but it works. As does the bizarre collection of alien weapons that more or less resembles an arsenal of earthbound guns. One of the most interesting is a leech gun that draws power from nodes around the ship. Depending on the node, you get different projectiles/effects. For instance, a bright white node turned out to be a freeze power-up whereas a bright red one provided a rapid-fire machine gun.
There's also a new singleplayer video here.
