Counter-Strike In-Game Ads Illegal? - briefly|
| (hx) 12:56 AM CET - Jan,14 2006 |
Earlier this week a new in-game advertiser called
Engage put
in ads for Subway restaurants inside Counter-Strike levels. Today
ShackNews
contacted Valve to see what their involvement with the product was. They
were given the following response from marketing director Doug Lombardi: "At no
time did Valve grant permission nor discuss these advertisements with Engage. As
such, this is now a legal matter. Advertising or any other commercial use of our
games requires our written permission."
ShackNews has also learned that Engage did not handle the technical aspects
of the project; this is done by another firm called IGA International. IGA has
apparently developed a propriety technology called Radial Network to handle this
kind of advertising.
Well, I'm with Valve on this one. Steam and HL are trademarks of Valve
Software. If another franchise is using their products to make $ or using them
to sell space to other third-parties. Thats a direct violation of their
trademark and copyrights, especially if Valve didn't sanction them or was not
asked permission.
Also,
a new Steam Update has a screenshot of the upcoming remake of the Militia
map for Counter-Strike: Source. Word is: "As you can see, this new version of
Militia is visually a dramatic departure from the previous version. There have
also been a few changes to the way the map plays, which should make for some
interesting matches." |

Hahaha, but truthfully, pretty dumb to do something like that. Now Valve will get richer, slower and more uncaring. Think Gabe. Thanks a lot Engage! Now get a brain and take your Subway and Jerry the queer sub eating homo somewhere else! I don't care if Jerry lost weight, I want Grease dam#it!
| Jelster | (04:33 AM CET - Jan,14 2006 ) | Plain stupid to do something like this without Valve's okay. Unless of course there is nothing in the ULA to say you can't do it.
On the other hand, is it so bad that perhaps some great server admins could earn some money by including adverts on their servers. I don't see valve contributing squat to the people who run servers and ultimately support thier client base.
Now those screenies look crap but if someone took the time to put adverts in that fit the environments they were placed in on the maps why the hell not, it hardly like we don't go through life bombarded by them already.
If it doesn't happen on the servers then I'd expect the Map/Mod makers to just get sponsorship via this route. If Joe Public doesn't cut into the revenue stream with this then the same advertising agencies will and none of us will benefit.

Fuck. Every fuckin' time I load up steam i get gay ass faggy pop-ups for some shit. That's bull shit. Steam sucks. I'm glad someone did this. Everymap either has homemade ads or a legit ad. It's not like it really matters. As long as valve ain't gettin' paid then it's wrong. Samething when nobody is allowed to sell their copy of the game on EBAY. If Valve can't get a penny they get piss mad. FUCK VALVE! :D
| Jelster | (04:47 AM CET - Jan,14 2006 ) | I think you forgot.
FUCK THEM IN THE ARSE

Well you have to agree if Nike and Kellogs starts advertising, or the army I mean.. come on. Would you release a game and let others use it as a tool to advertise and profit and you get nothing? Come on. It's ALL about money one way or another. Want that dick size increased? it COSTS MONEY! No sorry more sex doesn't make it bigger. My wife doesn't buy that story either. Hahahahahahaa!!! Another thing is is that Half-Life is big, cheats and all, the idiots go out and play it and the community is big. That's a lot of people seeing "other" company ads. It's money loss one way or another. Gaming is a big business, I can't blame Valve for their actions. They have their right in this corrupt society we are all a part of.

No you constantly whine about Valve no matter what the news is because you have a grudge against them.
I'm whining about Valve right now because I don't agree that they should be the ones to benefit from advertising on servers they do not pay for with software people have purchased.
The other post was humour. I certainly don't think valve should be bum invaded, nor do I think it would make them any better a developer :)
| yessum | (03:55 PM CET - Jan,14 2006 ) | | Meh. I just hate Valve. | |
| xxxx | (10:32 PM CET - Jan,15 2006 ) | | I don't have a grudge against them, I just don't go with many peoples opinions they are so good. Their support sucks, Steam sucks and VAC is BS and they continually leave their community in the dark in regards to anything except upcomming titles. As for their problem with advertising. I said all I wanted. | |
| KingArthur | (05:39 AM CET - Jan,16 2006 ) | | I personally don't mind ad's in games as long as they are seamless and fitting, a bill board off in the distance in a city map is fine or if there is some garbage on the floor like a McDonalds cup or fries package I think it's fine as long as it doesn't get in the way or look out of place, but a subway poster on the wall of an office building is stupid it would ruin the game. | |
| yessum | (01:58 PM CET - Jan,16 2006 ) | Not really, an ad out of place is just like a kid using a spray. It'll always be off place.
Y'know? Ads in a game are fine. They can distract, but then again anything can; a tker, a goatse logo, a rude microphone operator... etc.
