ET: Quake Wars details - briefly|
| (hx) 06:01 PM CET - Jan,10 2006 | VE3D
runs down some of the highlights from this month's issue of
Computer Gaming World magazine,
in which Enemy
Territory: Quake Wars graced the pages:
- Human Classes: Field ops (fire support/machine pistol), Engineer
(defense and support/shotgun, mines & traps), Soldier (duh/machine gun, LAW
rocket launcher), Medic (support/ assault rifle &grenade launcher) and Ranger
(sniper).
- Strogg Classes: Tank (your basic stormtrooper/Bosonic Orb gun),
Oppressor (heavy weapons and lightning gun), Constructor (engineer/nail gun, EMP
charges), Meditek (medic/unknown weapons) and Infiltrator (sniper/rail gun).
- Just from looking at the screens, Marines have tanks, helicopters, mobile
radar, anti-air guns, mechs, fast attack hover fighters and amphibious assault
vehicles. They don't talk much about the Strogg, but I assume they will have
similar units. Except they ARE the vehicles. I think...
- Strogg have an anti-gravity jetpack type unit.
- id is looking to bring ET to other properties, possibly Doom.
- No plans to support bots, although there are some single player
training missions.
- There's some sort of XP/ranking system similar to Battlefield 2.
- As far as tech stuff goes, they are using the Doom 3 engine. But a lot of the
changes to make Quake Wars more of a multiplayer friendly experience has been
done in-house over at Splash Damage. Expect 32 player games.

Still the Doom3 engine hasn't had much online success yet but I have high hopes for SplashDamage and they certainly have the background to pull this off.
Adding it to the "Please please please, don't let them screw it up" list along with Stalker. :)

Appears Quake Wars is nothing but a miniture version of BF 2 which a futuristic theme. I think the "Strogg" remind me too much of the Borg and the lack of imagination behind them really turns me off. I'd like to know what the spec's of the machine was that that video came from. I'd like to know if all those facial expressions will be in the game as well or is that gimick. Because the intro says "In-game Footage", so that would be false advertising to me.
Again, I'll believe it when I see it. I do not have such high praise for Doom 3 engine.
| Jelster | (03:36 AM CET - Jan,11 2006 ) | I don't know why people have to directly compare BF and ET as if BF is some monolithic achievement. I always felt BF is like the billionaire's idiot son, so much potential but let down in execution.
Neither title has copied the other nor do I think they compete on gameplay. ETQW is objective based and BF is ticket capture and hold. ET had a much more developed class system based on the established RTCW base.
The introduction of vehicles is probably influenced by BF but then that hardly made Halo a BF clone. I also think any open terrain FPS that doesn't include vehicles would be totally slated for their omission.
From all the recent press I'd be surprised if this isn't released within a couple of months. After the disappointment that was CoD2 MP I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out.
