360 hard drive - a third smaller than advertised? - console
(hx) 03:40 AM CET - Dec,09 2005
GamesRadar is reporting that Xbox 360's owners can never access more than 13GB of storage space - just two thirds of the stated size. Obviously some space will always be required by the operating system, as true of everything from iPods to desktop computers, but it's rarely such a high proportion. While there's no doubt that 360s hard drive is indeed the claimed size, its effective, usable capacity is actually only 65% of that. This could become more problematic as large files, such as high-definition movies, become more common. Out of the box, Xbox 360 has only 12GB of free space, but it's possible to free another gigabyte by deleting the demo movies and music.

In Xbox 360 related news, TeamXbox has directions on "How to Avoid Your Xbox 360 From Scratching Your Discs.":
After many Xbox 360 owners reported scratched discs as a result of tilting their consoles between the horizontal and vertical positions, the guys at Llama.com decided to run an investigation.

They painted the whole black laser assembly housing with a silver grey pen, reassembled the drive and did the tilt-the-console-while-it-is-working trick using a copy of Quake 4. After hearing that spooky scratching sound, they once again disassembled the drive to find out what causes the scratches. The following picture shows exactly the areas that produce the scratches.

So there you have it. Switch your Xbox 360 between vertical and horizontal position while playing a disc and rest assured that disc won't work again. As Llama points out, Microsoft does indeed warn about this in the Volume 1: Setup of the manual that comes with the Xbox 360: "Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions."
