Quake 4 Goes Gold! - gold
(hx) 12:44 AM CEST - Oct,04 2005
Activision just sent us a pres release announcing that Quake 4 has gone gold!
id Software, Raven Software and Activision, Inc. have confirmed Earth's invasion of Stroggos with the announcement that QUAKE 4 PC has entered manufacturing and will begin shipping to retail stores nationwide on Tuesday, October 18. The long awaited sequel to QUAKE II, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the Earth Defense Force's legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race.

"On October 18, QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale with this new chapter in Earth's war against the Strogg," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Fusing an epic war-story driven single player campaign, and fast-paced QUAKE III Arena inspired multiplayer, QUAKE 4 delivers a gaming experience fans will be raving about for years."

Developed by Raven Software and executive produced by id Software, QUAKE 4 begins only moments after the events of QUAKE II, with the Earth's fleet launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. As Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, gamers invade the alien stronghold, fighting alone, along side other Marines, and in mechanized walkers and hover tanks as they encounter the Strogg and their disturbing amalgamations of man and machine. Built on id Software's revolutionary DOOM 3 technology, QUAKE 4 also features fast-paced multiplayer competition modeled after the speed style and feel of QUAKE III Arena.

Big marketing, Doom 3 engine.. yippee. Needless to mention the lousy textures(walk up to a wall and it 'looks' fake, wow that's advanced), lack luster physics engine(yippe the bodies react a bit more to shots, what? do they bounce on the ground now?). Well at least iD and Raven were able to salvage an inferior engine amidst some of todays other superior engines. And then what's there to gain by Quake 4 when people already playing UT2004 and waiting on UT2007. Why anyone would want to buy this is beyond me. It offers nothing except memories of their older counterparts that were good a long time ago. Oh and you have to love those enemies too, all come from the exact same gene all look the same with the same scars in the same places. Woo..I know, I know ranting again. Just peeves me off to see such a lack luster non-innovative game from a company with such a big rep.

You have to ask why you would honestly feel the need to stare at a wall in what is a fps game. Please note the words Game and FPS, they kinda tip you off that realistic wall rendering is not a priority.

I believe the physics engine is totally capable and perhaps the lack of excessive physics is erm because they're excessive and add nothing to the game?

How exactly is the engine inferior? What "RELEASED" engine game is superior? Only thing I've not seen you knock is CoD2 and thats still based on the same Q3 engine technology they licensed for the first one.

Why get Q4 over UT2k4 2k7? Perhaps a single player game which is a sequal to Quake 2? Perhaps an updated version of the popular Q3 multiplayer game? I'm no big fan of the UT franchise but I certainly recognise why people would choose it over other games. Its personal taste and frankly I don't think the two games are competing directly.

I think this is called a limitation of the technology. Ever consider that perhaps loading all those textures and models might just cause a huge memory requirement? Perhaps you need to stop expecting games to be real life, ray traced experiences and then you might not feel the need to knock them all the time.

Sad thing is you're ranting about minor, technology limited points and not much about the game. Perhaps you should start being a little more positive, you might actually enjoy something.

I'll need to see a demo first. That's how far id has fallen in the decade since I've bought every one of its releases. From the heights of the original Quake to the depths of Doom III, it's quite a tumble--the distance, exactly, from stellar gameplay to gameplay as an afterthought to technology.

Raven being devs on this one is a bit of a bright spot, but bottom line: prove it.

lmer(11:29 AM CEST - Oct,04 2005 )
Bottom line, were gonna play it anyway. Anyone who says he/she uninstalled D3 before completeing the game is full of it. :)

I de-installed that crap a long time ago, lmer. R U sane!? I loaded it up later again to say at least I finished it. They wont even take it as a trade in at EB! Gee wonder why? Maybe because the shelf already has Doom 3 boxes for $24.99.

As for Jester who spent quality time microscoping my post and barely raising one valid and meaningful idea. U clearly haven't got a clue, nor does it warrant me having to waste my time with you. You are one of the targets for Quake 4 advertising. You are already sold on it. Most REAL gamers know Quake4 is going/looking like total garbage. Nice how they made sure to make it go GOLD when some of the possible games of the year are coming out! I guess they are hoping on the accidental sale. LOL!

Ya people when I play a NEW game, I expect IMPROVEMENT. I don't expect cheapness. I don't expect people to cut corners and then try passing something off things as amazing. I read lot of BS reviews including one here about Doom3. There is NO excuse for cheap bitmap textures, there's no excuse for a embarassing modeling system or the fact he stole ideas from other games rather than come up WITH HIS OWN. There's no excuse for CHEAP and PAINTED on shadows. Real gamers know the difference. I am a real gamer. COD 2 is a MAJOR improvement in terms of quality over COD. It's huge and it's nice to see and they are gonna grab up a lot of the fps gamers. Doom 4 is just a cash grab where they hope n00b's and those less informed are going to go buy it.

After buying Doom3 I realized just how crap iD has become. Unless they come up with something that really pushes the envelope in gaming (which should be carmacks biggest desire) I ain't interested. Nor do I know anyone across 2 of my Clans that are interested in Quake 4. Nobody I know cares or think Quake4 is gonna be anything but trash.

I think I raised plenty of valid points to your negative "Hey look at me" style post you're so fond of. The fact you can't even counter one of them shows you've got little substance behind your original post.

Nope I used to play Q3. Q4 offers a single player game and an upgraded Q3 multiplayer. I'm interested enough to see how that plays to put down my money. Advertising in this case has just provided me with the details I've listed above. People who need eye candy to justify their purchases are obviously the muppets you're referring too.

Most real gamers played Q3 with the graphics at the lowest settings possible to get every fps out of their systems and remove any screen clutter.

You may not like the D3 engine but really you should stop complaining about it like you're the only person who sees the truth and you must save the rest of us from our mistakes. People said it was too dark and Q4 shows it doesn't need to be. People said its only good for corridors and ET:QW is going to show its physics engine and outdoor performance.

Are you honestly serious? You think they release the game in Oct/Nov up against FEAR, CoD2, SS2 to name just three highly anticipated titles to score some accidental purchases? Perhaps this is erm whats it called, oh yes, the HOLIDAY SEASON where lots of games get released each and every year. Jeez.

Why is it the "Real Gamers" are always the ones who would rather join a server to bitch moan and disrupt a game, always have some stupid rule or method of play which they feel they must impose on everyone else and then get a bunch of fellow idiots to back them up until the server empties or they get banned.

Its more of the same with better graphics. The improvements are minor or in your words STOLEN from other games. I look forward to it, don't get me wrong its very appealing but hardly the ground breaking game you expect Q4 to be.

Now was that a genuine slip or do you really just have a problem that you got suckered into thinking Doom 3 was anything more than a tech demo of the new engine by id?

I guess you'll be next in line to me when the Revolution comes out then.

Shocker, you socialise with people who think the same as you. Guess that gives you a nice safe corner to cultivate those over inflated opinions of what a REAL GAMER should aspire to.

Nosferatu(07:40 AM CEST - Oct,05 2005 )
Jelster, you seem like a guy who has sane thoughts and thinks logically. Why the hell do you spend your time to prove something to someone who is too stubborn and uncompromising to accept any other's ideas? There's just no use in explaining him something that is obvious.

Jelster(04:31 AM CEST - Oct,06 2005 )
Between you and me, I just post to see if I am comfortable with my own opinions. I gave up expecting anyone like that listening to reason many years ago. :) Sometimes laying it down in writing makes you think whether perhaps you're being a bit over zealous yourself.

Having done those two posts, I'll still buy Q4, I have faith in the D3 engine and expect it to improve with its title developed on it. The addition of megatexture (?) for ET:QW shows how dedicated id is to its products.

Anyway, so many good games coming out this month and now Wolfenstein is announced. I'm looking forward to a great end of the year!

Nosferatu(09:39 PM CEST - Oct,06 2005 )
Yes, you're right about writing. And yeaaaaahaaa! You're so right about great crop of games this year. Soon I'll have my dirty hands on B&W2, I've been waiting for so long!!! Just can't sit still when thinking about popping into this cosy world again. Ah, memories :)
