Half Life 2-Lost Coast playtest and tech info - preview
(hx) 03:10 PM CEST - Sep,14 2005
The chaps over at Bit-Tech have visited Valve's offices in Seattle and they have written up a preview of Valve's offices in Seattle, based on what they saw there. Here's a taster:
Performance: The other contentuous issue surrounds performance: people have heard the specs and are cursing the fact that they'll have to upgrade for Lost Coast. The key point to understand is that HDR and Lost Coast are independent of each other. HDR has been added to the Source engine and the performance hit is managable: between 10-30% perhaps, though we will be conducting a thorough benchmarking test later this week on both ATI and NVIDIA-based cards. If you can already play Half-Life 2 or Counter-Strike: Source at a decent framerate, you should be able to enjoy Day of Defeat: Source with HDR at a decent framerate.

Lost Coast, on the other hand, is a single-level technology showcase that features HDR as one of its many party tricks. It features very high resolution textures, and improved player models: the infamous Old Man on the docks is approx 6,000 polygons compared with around 3,000 for a Half-Life 2 character. These are the reasons why Lost Coast has relatively high system requirements.

Initial systems: However, all is not lost, if you excuse the pun. The system used to demonstrate the game to us today was an Athlon 64 3800+ with 2GB of RAM and a GeForce 6800GT - high end for many people, but not stratospheric. If you needed further proof, the 1024x768 2xAA screenshots featured in this article were taken on a 1.6Ghz Centrino notebook with only 1GB of RAM and an aging 128MB FireGL graphics card. True, it ran at 10FPS at High Detail, but it was playable enough to appreciate the overall achievement.

HDR looks like crap in these screens. They make this expensive fx look so overrated, and by the look of it know not how to use it properly. On a general note, HL2 strongly failed to impress me. I won't be playing this.

lmer I was feeling that way to when I was playing HL2 for the first time.I felt that all the waiting had diminshed its graphics and game play.I also felt upset when allot of the game content was changed due to the theft.I remeber vids with the hydra..Where is it now? However,I recently just played HL2 again with my new vid card with everything maxed out.6xAA 16XAS and I have to say that I was missing a great deal of detail with my old 9500.I also thought to my slef that no game has come out since then that has really impress me since playing HL2.The moral of the story..Try playing it again. You might be suprised.

I won't be reinstalling HL2--it's too linear to play again. In an age of open ended games from Rockstar and Bethesda, it just doesn't match up to the more involving experience of being able to do and go where you want. Overall, I respect what Valve did; it's an accomplishment. But after 15 years of FPS gaming, it's just more of the same--with a few bells and whistles. Bring on innovative gaming.

More people I talk to that play or played HL2 got bored and tired of the piss poor attitude of Valve. Only updating CS and leaving DM people up the creek. I myself was all over HL2 but now, couldn't care less. And honestly, other than physics, HL2 got nothing going for it. I feel sorry for new modders, including Dystopia and their BS download count. Ya, 80000 downloaded it? How come there is only 50 some servers and virtually everyone is empty? Downloading and playing are two different things and the Dystopia mod really has nothing to hook you.. Wohoa a few things like click to have sprint, click to have infared.. Wow! boring. Their map is also a total bore, do they not know you can do fog and sounds in maps? LOL! It's desperation of HL2 community looking for something to keep them hooked. DM Pro mod, hardly anyone playing it. Again, same thing, everyone playing CS. And why not? it's the only game Valve has really done any support. FEAR, Bet on Soldier is where I am going and the BOS MP demo is wicked!
