 Wednesday Reading -Xbox 360 pre-orders! - briefly
(hx) 03:43 PM CEST - Aug,24 2005
EBGames has started taking pre-orders for the XBox 360. The Xbox 360 Core Bundle is priced at $599.93, and it includes everything in the standard package, plus an extra wired controller, a 64MB memory unit, and four games: Perfect Dark Zero: Limited Edition, Dead or Alive 4, Project Gotham Racing 3, and Kameo: Elements of Power. The Xbox 360 Ultimate Bundle weighs in at just under $700 and includes an extra wireless controller with a Play & Charge Kit, a rechargeable battery back for wireless controllers, and the four games mentioned above. I'm not impressed. Especially since it can be safely speculated that those 4 games are not necessarily the 4 games someone would want above all others. Besides, I have no doubt - none - that you'll be able to walk into a store on launch day, plunk down $300 or $400, and walk out with nothing but an Xbox 360 box if that's all you want. Save your money - don't preorder yet :P

Here's some stuff:
  • EBGames Online Xbox 360 Preorder - Ebgames is offering two Xbox 360 bundles for pre-order. On top of the system and accessories you will also get the following games: Perfect Dark Zero: Limited Edition, Dead or Alive 4, Kameo: Elements of Power and Project Gotham Racing 3. The core version is sold for $599, the ultimate version for $699. You are paying $300 extra for the games and misc accessories, meaning you don't really save anything. In related news, UK chain store, GAME, has clarified that while it is still taking pre-orders of Microsoft's forthcoming next generation machine, Xbox 360, there is currently no word on how many units the group or country will be getting.
  • No PS2 Price Cut For Now - The head of Sony Computer Entertainment in the UK, Ray Maguire, told the BBC News website there would no price cut before Christmas.  Sony is hoping to buoy up sales by offering different types of PS2 games.
  • Skype Goes Massively Multiplayer  - Free Internet telephony firm Skype will allow its instant messaging to be built into Web sites and software applications such as music playing programs and multiplayer online games, it said on Wednesday
  • Google to launch instant messaging service - In a bid to extend its communication services, Google is expected to launch a new instant messaging (IM) and voice service called Google Talk.  Google Talk, which allows users to chat and talk, is still in beta testing and is only available to subscribers of Google's Gmail e-mail service. The software, which needs to be downloaded, is similar to Yahoo! messenger, Microsoft's MSN and Skype. Unlike Google gmail, where Google delivers advertisements based on the text of e-mails, Google said it has no plans to deliver targeted ads via its IM.
  • Zotob worm hole also affects Windows XP - Computers running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 in a specific configuration are vulnerable to worm attacks similar to the ones that hit Windows 2000 systems.
  • Sony and Toshiba Give Up On Unified DVD Format - Reuters is reporting Sony and Toshiba have apparently given up efforts to develop a unified format for next-generation DVDs.
  • Hacker taps into US military database - A suspected hacker tapped into a US military database containing social security numbers and other personal information for 33,000 Air Force officers and some enlisted staff.
  • Anna Popplewell on Narnia - ComingSoon.net got a chance to talk exclusively to Anna Popplewell about playing Susan in the highly-anticipated film.
