 Monday Reading - briefly
(hx) 04:03 PM CEST - Aug,22 2005
Hope everyone has had a good weekend. Yesterday I spent most of my time doing some PHP coding and watching Formula One on TV.

For those of you who don't know, Saga Of Ryzom players get free month of play. So, if you have not yet played this fantasy MMORPG you might to consider doing it by Aug. 29.

What games are coming out this week? Here's a list: Big Mutha Truckers 2 (PC/PS2/Xbox), Nibiru: Age of Secrets (PC) and World Series of Poker (PC/PS2/Xbox).

Other games due in stores this week include 187 Ride or Die (PS2/Xbox), Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance (Xbox), Hello Kitty Roller Rescue (GC), Inuyasha - Feudal Combat (PS2), King of Fighters 02/03 (Xbox), The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Descruction (PS2/Xbox/GC),  Namco Museum Battle Collection (PSP), Advance Wars: Dual Strike (NDS), Pac'N Roll (NDS) and three Nintendogs titles for NDS: Chihuahua and Friends, Dachshund and Friends and Labrador and Friends.

Here's some stuff:
  • Microsoft UPnP MS05-039 Vulnerability Detection Utility - MS05-039 Scan 1.0 is a Windows based detection and analysis utility that can quickly and accurately identify Microsoft operating systems that are vulnerable to the multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities released in the
    MS05-039 bulletin.
  • Xbox 360 - What You Get For Your Money -1up.com has a news post throwing together information from various sources, and revealing some release details about the Xbox 360. Scans of marketing flyers finally make clear the differences in the two SKUs.
  • Euro Revolution Begins 15 June 2006? - Amazon.com France has slipped a page with the European release date and price for Nintendo's monolithic new game console, the Revolution. The release date is listed as June 15, 2006. The total, after conversion, would be about $365. European console prices tend to be a bit higher than here in the U.S., but this still sounds like a fool's ransom given the Xbox 360's $299-$399 pricetag.
  • Linux is really a trademark now -  Linus Torvald has trademarked the name Linux and has moved forward to ask companies using the name to pay a trademark fee. Late last week, an Australian company started pursuing companies using the name with the demand that they pay a $5,000 fee to use it.
  • Power-Line Networking: The Next Generation - HomePlug 1.0 moves data at a theoretical maximum of 14 megabits per second, with real world performance roughly equivalent to the 4.5 mbps or so of 802.11b Wi-Fi. HomePlug AV's theoretical maximum throughput is 200 mbps; real-world data rates should run between 70 mbps and 100 mbps, says Andy Melder, senior vice president for strategic business development at Intellon, one of the companies contributing to the spec.
  • Swiss music industry aims to starting fighting online piracy - Swiss authorities are working to fight those sharing out copyrighted music, either by P2P or on a Website. Another issue will be dealing with students in schools & universities that share out music, since it is much more difficult to track the individuals involved.
  • New AMD chips meant for mobile gamers - The Turion MT-40 and MT-37 are available to PC makers for $359 and $268, respectively, in bulk amounts
  • Sony launches Walkman Bean - Walkman Bean will be available in both 512MB and 1 GB capacity (NW-E205 and NW-E207). The models will be priced at £99 and £79 respectively. There will also be a 512 MB model with a built in FM tuner (NW-E305).
  • UK Developing Roadside Sleepiness Test - UK officials are developing a roadside video game-like test of awareness to be used to gauge whether a motorist is driving while drowsy, whether from over-the-counter medicines or lack of sleep. Scotland on Sunday reports that the prototypes of the handheld device require suspected drowsy drivers to guide a cursor around a screen and respond properly as various road signs flash on the screen. Anyone responding with slow reflexes can be hit with a £2500 (US $4,490) fine for "driving without due care and consideration."
