The LA Times has broken news of Microsoft's pricing plans for the Xbox 360 console. The basic version of the next-generation system will launch at $299, the premium version shipping at $399.  To HDD or not to HDD? That is the question...I wonder if the standard hard-driveless version of the Xbox 360 can use Xbox Live and is backward compatible...what do you think?

Here's some stuff:
  • Windows worms knocking out computers (updated) - Computers across the United States are being hit, including those at cable news station CNN, television network ABC and The New York Times. Tokyo-based antivirus company Trend Micro blames the havoc on various worms, including the Zotob worm that hit the Internet over the weekend and new variants of the Rbot worm.
  • Lineage II fraud results in arrest - According to a report in the Mainichi Daily News today, Kagawa Prefecture Police in Japan have arrested a Chinese exchange student who allegedly used a bot hack in Lineage II to steal items from defeated characters.
  • Kid busted by WoW-playing mommy - It used to be that a boy could play his favorite game all night and mean old Mom would be none the wiser about it. But when WoW's so popular that Mom's playing too, Junior runs the risk of getting busted. In the thread linked below, little boy Brion makes a rather innocent-sounding forum post at 3:30 AM. Trouble is, his mother notices because she reads that same forum. She responds: 'Pardon me for hijacking the thread, here.. But, Brion - if you don't want your mother to know you were up and on the computer at 3:29 in the morning - DON'T post on a forum that she reads. Busted. Grounded.'
  • Xbox 360 to ship at $299 without HDD, $399 for high-end version - The LA Times has broken news of Microsoft's pricing plans for the Xbox 360 console, revealing that the a basic version of the next-generation system will launch at $299, with a premium version shipping at $399. According to the paper, the $299 version of the console will not include a hard drive - with the extra $100 for the premium version buying a 20Gb drive as well as a wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television-style remote control.
  • Euro PSP to Ship With Anti-MAME Upgrade Pre-installed - This is because Firmware Upgrade Version 2.0 will be pre-installed.
  • New AMD Notebook Chip - AMD has introduced the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor 4000+ for full-size, high-performance notebook computers.
  • Grand Wega - 60 inches for $5,000 - Sony Electronics introduced two new sets in the line based on the acclaimed Silicon X-tal (Crystal) Reflective Display (SXRD) technology delivering full 1920 x 1080 high-definition resolution.  The 1080p (progressive) KDS-R60XBR1 and KDS-R50XBR1 Grand WEGA models compliment two existing SXRD products -- the 70-inch QUALIA 006 micro-display and the QUALIA 004 front projector.
  • Man cools computers with oil - If you fly your browser over to this page, you'll see the bottles of vegetable oil he used for his first machine, next to what looks like a fish tank filled with oil. There's more up to date pictures, here. (thanks TheInquirer)
