Xbox 360 and PS3: death to PC gaming? - briefly|
| (hx) 04:38 PM CEST - Jun,04 2005 | CNet
has published an interesting article about the impact of the upcoming
Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on PC gaming. Here's an excerpt:
If you buy the hype, the PS3's Cell processor--combined with an Nvidia-based RSX graphics processor--will offer stronger graphical performance than just about anything you can get in a current gaming PC. That means you're getting a whole system for less than what it would cost to buy a cutting-edge, high-end graphics card. But you don't have to take my word for it or even Sony's: the claim that the PS3 will offer the equivalent graphics performance of two GeForce 6800 Ultra cards working in tandem came from Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of Nvidia. Current cost of those cards: about $500 each. Cost of Alienware's Aurora ALX SLI, which incorporates a dual 6800 Ultra configuration: nearly $5,000. And how many consumers are willing to pay hundreds extra for PC graphics cards that the manufacturer's own CEO admits are inferior? I'll let you do the math.
In related news,
C&VG has conducted an interview with Epic's Mark Rein talking about next-gen
hardware, games, and U-Engine:
CVG: So you're not exactly predicting the death of the PC in the midst
of this next-gen frenzy?
Mark Rein: You know, it used to be id, and Epic, and a few others aimed
at all those high-level games, but now because everybody's doing PS3 and Xbox
360, they're all gonna be doing high-level games. So when they do bring them to
the PC, they're gonna be great.
And we actually adjusted our pricing structure on Unreal Engine 3 basically to
say "you're paying for all three whether you're using it or not, so you may as
well do PC!"
We're evangelising to all our customers, we want them to do PC, because we make
royalties, so the more they do...[laughs]

| Rasded | (08:31 PM CEST - Jun,04 2005 ) | | Ya they did..And Xbox was supposed to as well..I dont think PC gaming will go anywhere..People use there PC for so much stuff,I dont see consoles doing that for a long time. One good example..PORN | |
| yhancik | (01:24 AM CEST - Jun,05 2005 ) | sure sure but they said "PC Gaming", not PC :P
that would indeed ben really stupid to say consoles would kill PC

| Aesliip | (02:54 PM CEST - Jun,05 2005 ) | | 2x 6800ultra in SLI mode to match a PS3 , well im not expecting a PS3 release until early next year and by then , we will have single cards that match those speeds(R520 , G70). | |
| lucas | (03:47 PM CEST - Jun,05 2005 ) | Aesliip: a few things for you to consider.
a: how many people are likely to fork out for two 6800u's and a motherboard with support for SLI... compare that figure with the number of people that will fork out for a $300 console that can outperform it (what you've state MIGHT match the GPU, havent even started on the cpu side)
b: how many pc games do you think are going to be written that make use of such a hardware config that is rare except among the rich and stupid? how many console games do you think will be written that take advantage of the standard hardware that every console of that type will have?
pc gaming is gonna need to pretty fucking awesome titles to survive this round
| Sabot | (12:09 AM CEST - Jun,06 2005 ) | The BIG difference this time around is the XBox2 will plug into your PC and also you will be able to swap out the HDD. The cost of PC gaming is cheap for the software but rediculously expensive for the Hardware. Also the demise of AGP to PCI-E and the fact that you need new board,RAM,PSU and case *if* you build (like i do) is off-putting to say the least. Graphics cards last for a couple of months -novelty wise- and then you play a game that strangles it! 6 months later that card is half price.
That's the sickening part of owning a PC. A console will always produce games that run on it for however long it lasts -not what you can say for the PC...
We have 64bit Longhorn coming out, which means that XP will soon be counting down on it's suport from MS. PC gaming is a rip-off! Some say that about console game prices (which i agree) but i buy pre-owned or second hand, that way i save.
