 Irth Online Interview - interview
(hx) 10:23 AM CEST - Apr,05 2005
Computer Games Magazine has posted an interview with Dennis Robinson, Alan Chipura, and Tony Pungitore of Magic Hat Software talking about their upcoming fantasy MMO title Irth Online. Here's a slice:
Computer Games - How will the combat system work in the game?

Robinson, Chipura, and Pungitore - Basically, combat includes hand-to-hand, melee, and magic. One can cause damage to another by using weapons, poisons, fire, water, chemicals, and spells. There are defenses including resistance spells, anti-spells, anti-venoms, and neutralizers for chemicals.

The first goal of the combat system is to kill the bad guy. The second goal is to protect your territory. A third is to protect the goals of the kingdom; this one is a bit more complicated because is impacted by storylines affecting PvP and PvE where the characters are called to. One example of this is the civilization deities at the empowering source of wonders. Characters must make sacrifices to deities for sustaining faith. Faith is an attribute that affects a character's abilities. If one civilization can capture another civilization's wonder, the victorious civilization will have their abilities enhanced and the defeated will suffer diminished abilities.

The deity of the conquered wonder will shed inclement weather conditions upon his people until the wonder is reclaimed. Poor weather conditions will adversely affect all members of the civilization. Therefore, there is significant incentive for players to engage in this combat scenario.

Here is how the mechanics of the combat system work. Players enter into combat mode by pressing the combat mode button. This will attack the current target with the current weapon in hand or with your fists if you have no weapon.

In combat mode, you may select a new target and do whatever you wish to the target -- fire a spell, get stats, etc. This will not affect the current combat target. In the case of informational requests, this will not affect combat at all. Combat is only affected by use of skills, going out of range, or your or the target's death.
