 Game xStream Interview - briefly
(hx) 10:16 AM CET - Feb,18 2005
aComputer Games Magazine has conducted an interesting interview with Royal O'Brian talking about Game XStream, their upcoming game download technology and service. Here's a bit:
Computer Games - How does Game xStream differ from Valve Software's Steam technology?

Royal O'Brian - This is a question I get all of the time. Steam uses a download delivery system that sends the game or patches of a game to your system, then unlocks / unpacks those items for you to use. The thing is that you cannot use it until they have been fully received, which means its not a streaming "on demand' system, its a download system. There are many mixed comments I have seen out on the net, but personally it seemed to work for me except for a quirk here and there. Our system can send a fraction of the game to you, unpack and begin playing just as if the entire game were there. As the game plays, our engine watches to see what you are doing, and works with the game itself. Our system does not need to be conditioned, or hard coded into the game to support the delivery system, as does steam. And since we are transparent, we can compliment their system by using a steam game and actually make it into a streaming, on demand game as well, and not alter the content itself. Steam sees it as a valid game and you need to log into steam, but you can play way before the game has been delivered. I havent tested this lately, but it seems that if you start up a game, steam will stop transferring data in the background until you have exited the game, so it will only download when you are not playing. We are designed to stream in the background while you are playing and only send you the items you actually need while you are playing.
