- Another Bagle variant tries to spread -
Another version of the Bagle mass-mailing computer worm started spreading
this week, but it likely won't get far, security experts said. The virus,
known both as Bagle.dll.dr and W32.Beagle.AQ, attempts to turn off security
software on a victim's PC and then tries to download the majority of its
malicious programming from 125 Web sites. However, the virus has not spread
far because many of the Web sites cannot be contacted.
- Off-topic: First practical plastic magnets created -
The world's first plastic magnet to work at room temperature has passed
the elementary test of magnetism. Its creators at the University of Durham in
the UK have used it to pick up iron filings from a laboratory bench. So
the Durham team can claim to have made the first plastic magnet that could be
used in everyday products. One of the most likely applications is in the
magnetic coating of computer hard discs, which could lead to a new generation
of high-capacity discs.
- Off-topic: Nanotubes race toward bike parts - Sports equipment
maker
Easton Sports plans to start producing bicycle components constructed out
of carbon nanotubes in 2005, another step forward for the budding
nanotechnology industry. Easton said Wednesday that it will use nanotubes from
Zyvex in its components. Earlier this year, Richardson, Texas-based Zyvex
linked up with Intel to see if its nanotubes could help dissipate heat inside
PCs. Carbon nanotubes are coils of pure carbon that exhibit a number of
unusual properties. They can conduct electricity better than many metals, are
light and stronger.
- Off-topic: BBC Launches Downloaded Music Charts -
The Official UK Download Chart is based on the most popular, legally
downloaded tracks in the UK. It's compiled from the sale of permanently owned
single track downloads and doesn't include streamed downloads, subscriptions
or free downloads.' The Chart played on Radio 1, the UK's most listened to
station, and will be a regular feature.
- Off-topic: Updated Hitchhiker's Game - To coincide with the
new radio series of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the
BBC will be
reviving the old Infocom Hitchhiker's text adventure game, to appear on
Radio 4's website.
It's not just a
straight port, either - apparently 'the new version of the game will be
illustrated by Rod Lord, who won a BAFTA for his graphics for the original
Hitchhiker TV series.' (thanks

- Off-topic: Where are the Good Open Source Games? - It is clear that
building a top-quality game is harder than ever. The amazing amount of work
required, the short schedules, and the need for experts in many domains all
combine to make game development one of the most challenging areas of software
development. Will developing a game as open source
make
things easier?
- PS2 Online - Over 1.4 Million Users -
Sony has over 1.4 million users of the PlayStation 2's online services in
North America, according to SCEA executive VP Andrew House, with the number
growing by around 50,000 every month.
- 7 Megapixels Under $600 - In the midrange, for instance,
Sony will ship its 1-inch-thick Cyber-shot DSC-P150, a 7.2-megapixel
camera that includes a 3X optical zoom lens and a 1.8-inch LCD screen.
- Hitachi Drives Consumer Storage - Hitachi Global Storage
Technologies is launching a new line of
1.8-inch Travelstar C4K60 hard drives. The new drives will feature
high-density 30GB platters and ZIF (zero insertion force) connectors for use
in small consumer-electronic devices such as portable MP3 players.
- Maxtor Reportedly Raises HDD Warranty - Maxtor Corp. is reportedly
boosting warranty of its hard disk drives intended for consumers from one
year to three, following the similar move to stretch HDD warranty to five
years from the rival Seagate Technology.
- ATI X700 card released to press soon -
ATI is
working on its Counter Strike RV410 card that will be sent to the "press"
just a week after Nvidia reveals the scores. I guess that ATI might tweak its
clocks if it feels necessary as it still doesn't know Nvidia's final numbers.
You better make your X700XT card faster then 8000 in 3Dmark.
- 6600 GT scores 7960 in 3Dmark03 -
TheInquirer got this score on a high end P4 machine PCI Express of course
since the 6600GT only uses this new super duper bus
- Rock Pegasus Ti Widescreen Notebook review - Like the Evesham, this
Rock is a fully Centrino branded machine, but unlike the Evesham,
the Rock is driven by a 2GHz Intel Pentium M CPU, giving it a significant
performance edge. Supporting the CPU is 1GB of 333MHz DDR memory and a 7200rpm
60GB hard disk
- Intel Pentium 4 550 (3.4 GHz LGA775) Processor review - Although
its current processors are not quite outperforming the ability of these
interfaces, Intel Corporation decided recently that it was time to introduce a
new package for their flagship Pentium 4 line of processors in order to get
ahead of the curve a little bit. The engineers at Intel chose a design that is
quite different than any other mainstream CPU available today. The processor
design itself has not changed;
the
packaging of the processor is what has changed. Intel is still using the
recently released Prescott core (replaced Northwood) for their Pentium 4
line-up.
- Leadtek WinFast A400 Ultra TDH Graphics Card review -
The Leadtek WinFast A400 Ultra TDH did well where it was expected to do
well – in the pure speed mode as well as in games that don't use complex
version 2.0 pixel shaders. So, this card may suit ideally for people who like
playing in high resolutions, although without full-screen antialiasing. Like
all graphics cards with NVIDIA's new-generation GPUs, the WinFast A400 Ultra
TDH supports Shader Model 3.0, which may come in handy in the future, in case
the new pixel shader version becomes widespread among the game developers. The
higher GPU frequency of the Leadtek card (425MHz) is of a small, although
noticeable, effect.
