Battlefield 2 Impressions - preview|
| (hx) 02:06 PM CEST - Jul,16 2004 | HomeLAN
has posted its impressions of Battlefield 2, the upcoming true sequel to
Digital Illusions and Electronic Arts' hit multiplayer shooter Battlefield:
1942. Here is an excerpt:
For our live(but non-interactive) demo, we were shown a map entitled The Dam, in which the US and MEC forces were squaring off over a dam set in the Middle East. While we were shown several scenes illustrating different features of BF2, it's best if we split up gameplay from the technological, so we'll start with gameplay changes. Core gameplay is mostly the same as in previous Battlefield titles, with most of the changes being in the vehicles in the game. Besides bringing in modern vehicles, one of the first changes that we'll see in BF2 is that vehicles have been simplified ever so slightly, as to not destroy the learning curve in the game(which the developers want to keep as a reward to the devoted), but to make vehicles like the helicopter easier to use. Civilian vehicles have also been added this time around, and while they're not machines of war, they add variety and can still be used as a way to flatten opponents. Last, but not least on the vehicle front, DICE has added some flare to the visual style of the players who use the vehicles, as they will now receive vehicle appropriate clothing to go with the vehicle they use, so pilots will now get flight masks, tank drivers will helmets, etc. It will add no functional benefit to the user, but it is designed to be for environmental reasons, not function.
