Star Wars: Battlefront preview - preview
(hx) 10:11 PM CEST - Jun,25 2004
Both SWBattleFront.net and WorthPlaying have posted their preview of Star Wars: Battlefront, the Pandemic Studios multiplayer squad-based tactical first-person shooter for developer LucasArts. Here is a taster:
A popular character at the event was the Jetpack Storm Trooper who can out maneuver and quickly escape enemy firepower. The jetpacks are a faster way to travel and great for surprise attacks. Quick amounts of damage can occur since the Jetpack Storm Troopers carry a rocket launcher as their primary weapon.

The powerful AT-STs have long range laser cannons and a gunner turret which allows a second player to ride along. On one occasion, I was piloting one of these monstrous machines with another player in the gunner seat. We were unstoppable as we consistently attacked the same Imperial spawn point (hey, they could have switched their spawn location!) The killing quickly got repetitive, so I decided bring the AT-ST to another location. Everything was fine until I stepped too close to a tree. Just like out of the movies, an Ewok trap (you know, the swinging logs) crushed my AT-ST in a single hit. I was surprised to see the Ewoks attacking us since they were supposed to be helping the rebels faction. My only guess is that the furry creatures lacked the vision to differentiate who was piloting the machine. (Either that or it was payback from when I tossed a thermal detonator into a group of three or four Ewoks earlier in the level opps.)

Another character that deserves mention is the Droidekas. Pandemic captured the Droidekas from Episode I perfectly. These droids travel by rolling until wanting to engage a target, then they quickly initiate fighting with twin energy blasters and a personal shield for deflecting enemy fire. Anytime that you are stationary with a Droideka, you will want your energy shield up. One thing I would have liked to see was the droids move a little faster while rolling, but the Droidekas can still be used to capture control points efficiently.
