Weekend Reading - No Diablo III in 2010 - briefly
(hx) 12:36 PM CEST - Aug,22 2009 - Post a comment / read (10)
  • No Diablo III in 2010 - Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime has stated that only Starcraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm are heading to your computers in 2010.
  • Mass Effect 2 Runs at 30 FPS - Bioware's Jesse Houston has told VG247 that the game will run at a constant 30 FPS and experience no weird hitching that we saw in the first game: 'If you look at most good shooters, they lock down frame-rate at 30FPS: we've done the same thing. Bam. Everything's 30FPS, streaming is fixed up,' said the associate producer for the game. 'If you remember in Mass 1, if you took a step backwards and you hit a weird stream and it'd pause for a moment. We've done a away with that. What you're seeing here is pulled straight from the game.'
  • Battle.Net 2.0 Gets Some Features - For the next version of Battle.net (screenshots), which will launch around the same time as StarCraft II, the service will also allow friends to connect more easily and get news, info and more about the StarCraft II community.
Even while you are playing StarCraft II, you have access to your friends list. You can keep track of your stats and achievements and let your friends know how well you are doing in the game. Unlocking new achievements will also unlock things you can use like new avatars, decals and more. Additionally, it has been noted that Battle.net 2.0 will eventually support the sale of user created maps.
  • 20 Years Of Evolution - Scott Miller And 3D Realms - Scott confirms that the whole Duke Nukem Forever team has been laid off, but that he cannot discuss the status of the game because of pending legal actions. As for the future:  'Our future is fine. We have, I think at last count, 11 or 12 projects in the works. One of them is coming out next week. Another one is coming out in about six weeks. Both of those are on the iPhone. We have some major games in production still. So we're fine. That's not an issue at all.'
  • Wolfenstein reviews - CSN (7/10)
  • TF2 Blog - Making of Viaduct - Valve updated the Team Fortress 2 blog last night with a look at how KOTH_Viaduct came to be. Yes, they released a time lapse video of the creation of a map. Looks good!
  • Call of Duty: World at War map pack 3 has sold over 1 million copies - Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 3 from Activision Publishing, Inc. and developer Treyarch topped more than one million paid downloads during its first weekend of availability (August 6-9) on Xbox LIVE online entertainment network and the PlayStation Network. With this latest release, all three map packs for Call of Duty: World at War now total a combined 6.5 million downloads worldwide, and counting.
  • World of Warcraft: The Magazine coming soon - Blizzard and Future publishing (the company behind PC Gamer) have partnered to deliver World of Warcraft: The Magazine. The quarterly publication will be offered by subscription only -- officially you won't be able to purchase individual copies of the magazine (although I'm sure enterprising subscribers will plop their copies on eBay) -- with 1-year subscriptions selling for $40 and 2-years for $70. The magazine will be published in English, French, German, and Spanish.
  • Section 8 Demo Available on XBL Marketplace - Section 8 demo which is now available for download for XBL gold members.
  • Rock Band 3 May Use Project Natal - MTV Games manager Scott Guthrie sat down with MCV and said he could see Rock Band 3 utilizing the Project Natal technology.
  • 360 Elite $299 On August 30? - Kotaku is reporting the price for an Xbox 360 Elite will drop to $299 at the end of August.. The Arcade model will carry on at its $200 price tag, while the 60GB Xbox 360 Pro will officially be discontinued. That leaves the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite to take on Sony's upcoming PS3 Slim, which also ships with a 120GB HDD.

WHAT THE FUCK is going on with gamers... have we got a mass majority noobs as gamers or what nowadays... gone are the days of 100fps ..100hz refresh rates on crt monitors... took a step backards to shitty slow laggy 60hz Lcd's that seem to be barely improving at all... and maximum 60fps synced fps and an even more stupid console market.. and now 30FPS is fine!??! jeesh

wtf is going on... even the games are less replayable with more focus on gfx bling bling shit and less on gameplay, modding.

"No Diablo III in 2010 - Blizzard CEO"

meeh no surprise consider how delayed SC2 is already.

"World of Warcraft: Cataclysm "

yup always that cash cow to milk.. only level 85 eh.. i guess they're trying to not reach 100cap...can squeeze a few more expansions in... let the grind begin again.. so glad I quit playing that years ago..I'd hate to have to try and catch up and get to the same level playing field in armor gear and bonuses even just for pvp as the lifeless noobs who've stayed on playing.

You are not alone. 30fps is barely playable for me ...

i swear they might aswel just give console gamers.. games that fucking play themselves.. while they sit holding controllers on the couch and watch the fucking game play itself( while spectating and looking at the pretty shaders/gfx).. fucking noobs playing fps with a controller.. never heard of such noob rubbish, get a fucking mouse. I think PC fps gamers should be allowed to jump into the same console game multiplayer servers to hand out cans of Whoop ass! I mean i'd feel better, getting to own the noobs buying fps console games and dragging the quality down on later ported pc games.

30fps is nearer fucking video playback speed..where you just sit and watch! .. not interactive gaming speeds..and especially not FPS games.. at a bare minimum 60fps and that's a fucking minimum for decent multiplayer ... obviously if you're trying to run everything on glittzy high on higher resolution just for the single player experience/wondering around levels/game world then fine accepting a slower avg fps of around 50fps... but 30fps is just a serious lowering of targets for a generation of noobs using 60hz lcd's.

I swear I just want lay the smackdown on this asshole.. "30fps" - "most good shooters"!!! those quotes don't even belong in the same fucking sentence -what a fucking retard... obviously wasn't ever much of proper PC fps gamer.. probably got his ass handed to him in multiplayer quake servers back in the day and went back to playing on the console with rest of noobs. oh well i guess even those iD software assholes think capped 60fps is good.. no wonder all there games starting from doom3 have sucked ass...what a joke things have become.

oh well I guess I should become a noob, then I can enjoy these lowering of standards from games to shitty OS improvements like win7.

Genoism(05:07 AM CEST - Aug,23 2009 )
you guys, no offence, are retarded. Go google how many fps the human eye can actually see. Then come back and tell me you need 60...

omg you are stupid.. does Google tell you everything? you think a human can't perceive more than 60fps?!?!?! LOL

mega fucking LOL actually!!!!

I suppose if you asked Google if you were a noob.. it should probably tell you yes tbh.

here is tip: don't fucking take the first answers you come across as fucking fact!

And btw if you really can't see or feel the difference with interaction in a game at 60fps at 60hz refresh.. and 100fps synced at 100hz.. or even without the game and notice the smoothness in response and motion from 60hz to 100hz(or even higher 200hz/fps+++ even tbh) then I feel sorry for you, you're letting us all down by believing such rubbish.

So don't underestimate your own eyes!

i cant believe how often this is miss quoted and missunderstood.

between 18 and 24 fps the human eye stops distinguishing between single frames and interprets the seen picture as a moving objekt.
that dosent meen you cant see the diffrence between 24 and 80 fps wich you can very easy. especially with fast movement the tearing on the screen edges becomes very visable.
and i hate to break it to you but your eye does not work like a camera, it dosent "take pictures".

only at an fps rate of around 80 hz it becomes undistinguishable.

that beeing said, with activated v sync i have no problem with 30 fps.
but i dont play games without vsync anymore.

I can't agree with you more! Even with your foul language! I was preparing to swear badly as well, but you covered me!

Are we sure he is talking about the PC version though? If he is, then he is a fucking jerk! I played Mass Effect 1 on a slighlty overclocked Radeon 4850 at 1080P and it was absolutely 60fps smooth. No framedrops whatsoever.

No with the coming of the Evergreen series and GT300 series, they want to get games back to the stoneage? These fucking consoles have destroyed PC gaming for good!

nah he was talking about the console version, but 30fps for a first-person-shooter shouldn't be so acceptable no in 2009 ffs (it should be 60fps at least tbh).. like oh yeah we just cap it down to 30fps now lol.. i mean jeesh, I know Mass Effect 2 a singleplayer game but I think too much focus on gfx is just silly.. specially when they have a game that has so many other good qualities going for it already, they could work on those areas more.

And even on the PC version the quality of gfx for fps rate was just a bit off considering the better hardware ...I don't think the unreal3 engine or even there modified version of it is all that good tbh.. a shame really as the game itself with RPG elements and gameplay etc was good and different... and has much potential to be awesome. I do look forward to seeing the Mass Effect 2 on the PC(well eventually... in some lame port with rubbishy console targeted UI) but I doubt it would be anything of an improvement that I'd want to see.

"These fucking consoles have destroyed PC gaming for good!"

yeah its definitely dumped things down and taken a step backwards in someways imo.

"only at an fps rate of around 80 hz it becomes undistinguishable. "

i beg to differ.. 80hz+ is still very much distinguishable in interaction.. obviously its harder to tell the difference in smaller gaps between refresh rates.. but i could tell 85hz from 100hz notice the slightly more smoother output.. I think if tested most people would tell a faster display from one running slower especially in direct comparison of both at the same time.

I can't wait to see a 24"+ lcd/or whatever other technology for pc desktop offer better refresh rates than the bloody crap 60hz that most are being chucked out with.

strangestsensation(05:12 PM CEST - Aug,24 2009 )
Depends on the game really for a lot of games a 30fps limit is no bother. If game has motion blur (adds to fluidity) etc like I'm sure Mass Effect will, the 30fps will probably not be noticeable. I've got games on PS3 capped at 30fps and I haven't been bothered by choppiness or eye strain. Typically in very fast paced games like UT or QW fps can be a problem but usually not capped unless there is motion blur etc. In a RPG/FPS like Mass Effect I'm sure 30fps will work fine. Google is a good resource for this type of argument because there is a lot of good articles on fps.
