Total Annihilation creator backs the PC - briefly
(hx) 09:48 PM CEST - Sep,07 2010 - Post a comment / read (20)
Chris Taylor, the creator of PC hits Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege, offers an optimistic outlook on the future of the PC:
Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor reckons the phenomenal success of Steam means the PC version of upcoming multiplatform action role-playing game Dungeon Siege III will "compete" against the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions when it comes to sales.

"You've got almost every major player in the world buying a PC gaming company, whether it's Google investing in Zynga, Disney buying Playdom, EA buying Playfish, GameStop, the console videogame store, buying Kongregate, the free-to-play PC gaming company, Bobby Kotick announcing that 70 per cent of Activision Blizzard's revenue comes from the PC – 70 per cent!," Taylor told Eurogamer.

"When the next Star Wars launch is from BioWare, John Riccitiello [EA CEO] is probably going to have similar stories to tell. It won't be as big, but he's trying to do that. In other words, he's buying PC businesses and he's trying to do things in the PC space because the PC is where all the opportunity is. "It's apparently exciting enough for all those major players to all want to get into the business. I'm not saying consoles are shrinking. It's all growing. Everything is growing.

"It's amazing. It's like we love the drama of it."

OMFG this guy is a fucking retard too. Activision profits are all pc and makes up 70%! Wow, no fucking duh!!! Warcraft is PC!?!?! Oh yes and that definitely comprises all of PC world.. definitely a reason pc ain't dying. This is like a repeat of that moron from iD trying to say PC gaming ain't dying. It's not that PC gaming is dying/dying it's more the cost-entertainment ratio of pc compared to console is nowhere close. Sure you can have fun with a PC gaming at $1-2 grand for a PC but at the same time you can be sure at $400 (flat) you can play a game absolutely hassle free on console. On console, which PC will never have, is cheat free environments. When there are cheats on console they are banned. PC is for PC enthusiasts and PC and I don't care what any big-time pompous ass like Chris says, but for the average person a console will do better than a PC. The amount of exclusives for PC is but minute compared to console. Developers prime #1 platform is and will be for a long time CONSOLE. Get your head out of your ASS Chris. To me you just come off as another rich fuckhead trying to best another fuckhead at iD. And you FAILED.

Thanks for your balanced and unbiased opinion Tom.

Tom, try using your return key once in a while, then your ramble might be readable.
TL;DR

Csimbi(03:23 PM CEST - Sep,08 2010 )
Well, no surprise here. Everyone has a PC nowadays; no additional investment is needed to play games (as long as the hardware requirements are not sky high).

psolord(04:54 PM CEST - Sep,08 2010 )
Mr Taylor's support is very valuable for the PC.

Now if he just didn't tone down SupCom 2 as much, it would be great. Not a bad game at all, but still Sup Com 1 leaves a feeling of Superiority.

In any case they should at least had implemented some "unsafe" options so we could unlock unit number and such.

Also it was a bit small. They will release a new version later and they will require us to buy it again. Not gonna happen.

gx-x(06:05 PM CEST - Sep,08 2010 )
why is it always pc vs consoles? (and which consoles are we talking about? Console exclusives such as mario cart or super mario, legends of zelda and such crap can't (for me) even compare to bioshock 2, and BS 2 is no fun at all).

some of you have to realize that some people just hate using gamepads to play games. End. LEARNING to game (for fun ffs) with gamepad is a separate skillset that a lot of people don't want to have. Like I once said, to me it is like running with crutches or doing a mountain bike course in wheelchair. It's ok for driving games, but tps&fps...it's a chore rather than fun for many. So for me, that 400$ console would be just 400$ wasted.

Csimbi(07:11 PM CEST - Sep,08 2010 )
psolord> Not a bad game at all, but still Sup Com 1 leaves a feeling of Superiority.
A bit off-topic, but I have the same feeling. On top of that, the sequel was very short...
gx-x> to me it is like running with crutches or doing a mountain bike course in wheelchair
I like the second one, though it's not entirely impossible to play FPS games on consoles. Your aim is as good as when you're trying to shoot a sparrow with a cannon.

Too bad that is not the case though. Upgrades for gaming are needed every 6months to a year. If you want the best looking game experience. Just because people have a PC does not mean they can game.

First off anyone's support of PC is valuable because without blind idiots like Chris you would have zero for PC except valueware. Which is where it's all going anyhow. All Chris did was read the iD guys bs about PC not dying (saw him getting flamed everywhere and came to his defence) and elaborated on it. Ya he's as valuable to PC as is the crap clinging to my ass hair! Hahahaha! SupCom sucked, both of them so did the Dungeon Seige's he did. And what happened to his lame video's Kings and Castles or whatever that stupid shit was called.. I guess when you can't make games start making retarded videos..

Dude, since you are clearly not following the PC gaming market, why on earth are you commenting on things you don't know anything about?

Yes a well upgraded PC will give you best results, but that sure as hell does not mean that the PC of yesteryear (which is now a very cheap machine) cannot provide decent gaming experience.

Here are some videos I have made on my small gaming rig. It features a C2D E6600 and a 4850 512MB. The whole system does not cost more than 300$ now.

YouTube - SINGULARITY 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - RACE DRIVER GRID 1920x1080 4XAA ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - DIRT 2 BENCHMARK 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - BAD COMPANY 2 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - FEAR 2 1920x1080 4XAA ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - CALL OF DUTY IV 1920x1080 4XAA ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - LOST PLANET 2 BENCHMARK DX9 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - SUPREME COMMANDER 2 1920x1080 ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - MAFIA 2 BENCHMARK 1920x1080 NOAA ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

YouTube - KANE AND LYNCH 2 DOG DAYS 1920x1080 4XAA ATI 4850 @750MHz E6600 @3.0GHz

As you can see, it runs perfectly fine, with framerates far above what the fucktard consoles can do. And at superb 1:1 pixel mapped 1080P, unlike the 720P blurred fuckfest you usually see on a console.

So pleaaaase, stop arguing against the PC because your points are always moot, regarding this subject.

==============

As for Chris Taylors support, of course it is needed man. As is everyones on any platform.

gx-x(06:52 PM CEST - Sep,09 2010 )
to game in 30fps (which is what is 90% of console titles limited to) you really don't need more than 300-400$.

my rig:

c2d e8200@4ghz - ~90$
dfi lanparty p45 t2rs turbo - 90$
2x2gb ram ddr2 800 @1000mhz - ~50$
ati 5850 ~240$
case(chieftec)+psu (brand 750W)+keyboard+mice (logitech) ~150$ (but it's a choice, I have logitec wave set you can save 50$ on that)
hdd 1tb - ~80$

screen is a matter of choice. You can hook up 42" LCDTV if you want.

so all in all, you can have a VERY decent gaming machine under 800$, and not for gaming only. Get a 4890 instead of 5850 and shave off a 100 or more $...

Tom(08:49 PM CEST - Sep,09 2010 )
psolord,

You are so full of shit. $300 for that, my ass. Try more like $500+ once you add memory motherboard, screen, hard drive, case, psu, dvd, keyboard and mouse. LCD will cost you $100 easy for the cheapest piece of shit. And then your fps in the games was 30-40fps and it was choppy and tearing. Mafia was a tearing festival of crap! Give it a rest! Don't fucking waste my time with your bs. Not following gaming market. You are fucking clueless bud and don't assume you know fuck all about me and gaming, cuz you don't know shit.

And gx-x don't tell me this BS about hooking up your TV, next to nobody does that anyhow. I do have to say $800 is more reasonable, at least better than psolords bs. But even then it would be a piece of shit you have to upgrade down the road. Anyone who has a brain on their shoulder and wants to save money gaming today with the latest titles will likely buy a console for $400 period. And like I said, with no fucking lame ass cheaters.

Yes, everyone has a PC but if you are going to game on PC you want to do it at good quality with no hiccups. You aren't gonna do that with a shit pc. People have PC's to cruise net, blah blah on Facebook and look at porn and read their emails and play Farmville garbage... that's what the home PC is for a lot of people.

c2d e8200@4ghz - ~90$ (whatever man.. at least $180 - $200 for that)
dfi lanparty p45 t2rs turbo - 90$
2x2gb ram ddr2 800 @1000mhz - ~50$ (Ya right $50.. try ~$90)
ati 5850 ~240$ (ya sure, barely.. though i'd like to see where you get it for $240... try more like $280+ then add taxes)
case(chieftec)+psu (brand 750W)+keyboard+mice (logitech) ~150$ (but it's a choice, I have logitec wave set you can save 50$ on that) (again for a piece of shit combination, sure)
hdd 1tb - ~80$ (Ya for a total piece of shit, like a WD green drive)

Learn how to add buddy... you are talking around $750~1000 for that and that's because i got rid of your BS pricing on the ram at $50. F U, 4 GB or ram is at the least 85-90 on some of the best online shops...Now add taxes to all of that.. we are talking nearly 1 grand...But please back your prices up with some actual links to online stores selling for those prices.. you wont cuz you know you are full of shit.

Maybe a lot of morons come to this site and that's what you two bank on but for anyone with a brain on their shoulders know you two are talking complete bs.

Hey little Tom fucktard, Mafia 2 is tearing because I use vsync off in all videos. These are performance videos. If you don't want tearing you can turn vsync on. You know what vsync is, right?

30-40fps in very heavy games like, Bad Company 2, Lost Planet 2, Mafia 2. Still the graphics quality is leaps and bounds ahead from the crappy consoles. Anyway, I used maxed settings for these games, for comparison reasons. If you tone down the settings a bit, you can jump to 60fps, still with 1080P and better quality than any current console.

You seem to conveniently turn a blind eye to the 60+ fps of Grid, Dirt 2, Singularity, Fear 2, COD4. Nice downplay there.

This my 4850s unboxing video. The one I used in that rig. It cost 50 euros. I bet you can find better deals in larger markets.

So FUCK YOU TOM. You can build a perfectly 1080P capable gaming PC with equal money as a PS3. How much a PS3 250GB costs?

350$

HAHAHAHA! With half the HDD to boot!

And no I don't include a monitor. Consoles don't have monitors either. Please don't tell me these fucktard excuses you usually use, like PCs need monitors while consoles don't. I use a HDTV with my PC.

As for the OS, yeah right....!

Now WHO's full of shit, shitbrain?

Csimbi(02:14 PM CEST - Sep,10 2010 )
psolord,
nowadays you can buy cheap and very well performing ITX boards (I have two Zotax boards here based on nVidia 9300; it's just great stuff) and tiny HTPC cases to go with them (as long as your graphic card fits). So, you won't need that clumsy ATX case. Your box would be smaller than most consoles...

BTW: Why do you argue with Tom? He's made his decision and does not listen to anyone. Yes, he's a bit stubborn about it, but so are we. Console guys brag about consoles, PC guys brag about consoles, but in the end it's your gaming needs and style that decide which one suits you better. A few hundred years ago everyone believed that Earth was flat. For a moment, try to imagine how Galileo felt. Tom believes in consoles, so no matter what you say, it will be console for him. So, let him be a console guy.

gx-x(04:20 PM CEST - Sep,10 2010 )
@Tom:

dude, I don't know where you buy hardware, but I payed for that stuff 10 to 20% more one year ago, except for 5850 which I picked up almost just after it was launched when prices were lower than they are now. I payed it 190 euros. c2d 8200 I payed 130 euros in August 2008. You can get phenom 2 for that money now. RAM is Geil black dragon, I payed it 55 euros one year ago. And honestly, you can't calculate screen into PC price because you don't calculate 800$ 42 LCD-TV into PS3 price do you? ;)

edit: looking at the prices now, yea, everything is more expensive. Memory went up quite a bit compared to last year. I guess it has to do with those typhoons hitting Taiwan last year, destroying few factories etc. Truth to be told, you don't have to get Geil, you can buy some crap it will work just fine. even 2gb is enough if you don't use x64 OS. As WD green being crap, well I disagree, it's a solid drive, quiet, fast, 2 years warranty, what more do you want? Raptors in RAID? Well buddy, shit like that is loud and quite expensive. It's a luxury item for many. Just don't tell me you were thinking of making 1TB with SSDs...that's just absurd. We are talking about a PC that can run games, SSD or raptor isn't needed for that. 200$ diNovo logitech set isn't needed either, so don't talk about shitty components, PS3 has shitty components inside to, xbox 360 has even more shitty components. AFAIK, you don't get raptors or SSDs with them do you?

Tom(06:34 PM CEST - Sep,10 2010 )
Yes.. PS3 has some really shitty components.. the best and upgradable blu-ray player you can buy and a nvidia video card.. not to mention a good quality seagate hard drive.. so what are the crap components again? Oh maybe the built in wireless or physical wire connector? Hmm, oh wait.. it must be the plastic they used.. right..

I didn't buy my LCD to just play on PS3, that would be totally assinine. And no I don't factor it into cost of PS3, because I had the screen way before I had my PS3. I might as well factor in my 3 year old THX sound system too eh? Give it a rest. Ya I love how all of sudden it becomes Euro's.. and even still if I am right.. 55 euro's is 80 bucks american and 130 is is 170 american.. Right there it's over $200, plus taxes.

You can say whatever you want fella about cheap pc's. I continue to build PC's for people so I am current with the prices all the time and you are full of shit or provide bills and stuff and back up your bullshit. In the meantime quit spouting bs. A $300 pc does not exist and if it did, it will buy you shit and your pc gaming experience will suck ass too. Gaming on pc is expensive and it's an ongoing expense to stay current with and enjoy games the way the were MEANT to be.

Quit wasting mine and everyone elses time with your BS

This isn't exactly true both are half truths. My 7800GTX 512mb cards and 8800 GTX's still play the latest and greatest up to 1900x1200 res fine with adjustments for certain ones. These two series products are long in the tooth and work fine except for extreme resolutions and maximum AA and shadows. They're installed on older systems like a X2 AMD dual core 4800+ and a Intel Quad Extreme 3.2. They get the job done.

I'm pretty sure I've said something already about the GTX460. Purchased one recently as a replacement and it runs any game for under two hundred dollars.

Comparing upkeep costs and total purchase is kind of silly considering everything involved. Consoles like one person said need to include the cost of your television as without it you can't play. We shouldn't forget all the money you spend on extra controllers and gizmos which actually almost double the cost of owning those systems like XBox and PS3 and Wii. One controller or even two nowadays aren't enough for everyone. Add in the cost of Xbox live membership on top of your monthly internet fees as well. Consoles are a huge money sink in comparison to PC and the only thing you can do with them is watch a movie maybe or play games!

PC's a complete system might cost you around 500-1000 dollars then another 150-1000 dollars for a respectable video card to play games on. Internet is a monthly fee and let's not forget the lil gizmos here either like mousepads or special laser gaming mice you can buy. It does get expensive. The major difference here though is you can find a job, work from home, tele commute, email, web browse, create actual games for consoles or pc or handheld phones, and various other uses that we find trivial nowadays. It's not just a game platform and it usually more than makes up for itself by handling everything fairly well.

I said, playing them the way they are meant to be played. Not dumbing them down. And I know what a 7800 and a 8800 can do as my wife plays the Sims. She no longer has those cards because it was choppy and crappy looking with an AMD dual core and running at measily 1680x1050. Let's see how DragonAge or TwoWorlds 2 plays with a 7800 or 8800 at 1920x1200 and high quality settings.

Fantastic, but a GTX460 is not going to work in everyone system, it will require upgrades. And then can you put the rest of the system together for $300, no, you can't.

I am still on my original controllers, I haven't bought anything for my PS3. Xbox sure, they soak you with network cards etc. Guitar hero, either for PC or console you need guitar or be a fag and play it with keyboard.. yippee. Consoles have bundles that include 2 controllers and even a cam and there are bundles on sale all the time. $449 usually or less. PC also has lots of games that charge a yearly fee, like Warcraft for example which is well more than a Xbox membership. Hell even Star Trek online is more expensive than Xbox live. You are a moron to say a console is a money sink in comparison to a PC. Totally retarded. Financially a PC is a a way bigger money hole. I don't buy $300+ $400+ upgrades for my console every year. And I don't just watch movies and stuff on my console, at one time I was able to use Linux on my PS3 and currently I stream media from a PC to my PS3 to my TV. And my PS3 feeds my PSP for games too. I can also cruise the net, check my mail and do almost anything you can do internet wise including playing online games. But nice try..

Baconnaise>

Everyone has a PC, that all been discussed before man. No duh you can do other things than game. Having a PC to game in comparison to a console is a different thing. And as for a TV required for a console, who the hell wouldn't have a TV in the first place? Talk about a weak argument to inflate console cost.. So F off about including that in the cost of a console. You could game with a PS3 on a damn 27" trinitron if you wanted. So are you going to factor in a 15 year old TV? give it a rest.

Seriously, who's the next moron to try and say an everyday person would rather run to a store and buy a PC rather than a console to game. Gaming companies are profiting from console, not PC. Other than the gayCraft games there is no PC game I can think of that outsold it's console counterpart. And Chris can BS and that iD guy can BS that PC ain't dying but all they are doing is pushing their own businesses because they too are in denial.

P.S. I really don't care to continue this conversation. I am not going to keep responding to idiotic comparisons. A $300 pc is junk for gaming a $300 gaming pc doesn't exist unless it's second hand. Yes, maybe at $1000 you can do it, but a PC always needs upgrading. A console doesn't. A TV is a given in any household and to say that factors into the cost is just totally retarded. You might also say, I need a computer chair and a computer desk and shelves for all my media..Some of your points are just totally ill-founded and have no logic and or truth and as far as I am concerned this topic is beyond conversing about. It's pointless talking to some of you because it's like talking to an 8year old that wants to go ride his bike in a rain storm outside and fighting to try and convince me. Gaming today is more popular on console and it will continue to be that way unless lots of roadblocks on PC are eliminated. They haven't eliminated any of them in +20 years and they aren't about too.

Tom> Yes..

I built a system for you with links galore so you can feast your eyes on. You asked for links.

So if someone backs his opinion with hard PROOFS, is waisting your time? Of course he is, if he proves you wrong.

Look again, since you obviously missed something. With the same money you need for a PS3, you get a very decent PC, with Conroe based architecture and a Radeon 4850 1GB. More than enough for excellent 1080P gaming and some toning down of the settings when needed.

On top of that, it's a freagin PC, which you can use to do millions of things.

Consoles cannot do that. End of story.

gx-x(04:52 PM CEST - Sep,11 2010 )
well Tom, actually it's not even euros, it's dinars (RSD) my country uses it's own currency. I could provide bills but I am not going to for more than one obvious reason. I have nothing to prove to you, psolord gave you some prices, which you ignore. You are also ignoring what I said about increase in price for RAM and 58xx cards since last year. You can try and actually check that fact yourself. I am selling my 5850 with 2 more years warranty for 200 euros atm so if you have anyone that can collect in Serbia there you go. You will even get the bill saying it was payed 19.600rsd (1 euro ~ 100rsd).

As for shitty ps3 parts, here you go, nvidia 7xxx series GPU powering your graphics together with 1ghz crappy cell cpu's and some rambus outdated RAM which market rejected long time ago. I wasn't talking about the quality of build, I was referring to crap old hardware inside which alone isn't worth more than 50$

as for LCDTV, I don;t see your point? I told you 2 times you can hook up PC to that screen, together with ps3, xbox or whatever. You don't need dedicated PC screen, that was my point.

Also, good luck with watching ripped movies, downloads and internet browsing on your PS3 and it's BR player lol. Who cares about the quality of BR player anyway? Most people use it just to put games in it.

For large arrays, redundant boot drives, or advanced RAID modes we strongly recommend using a dedicated hardware controller card, but for simple configurations like mirroring or pooling there are options within Windows 10 which can be used without needing special hardware. This guide will cover a couple of those options and how to set them up. (1212 hits)
