TechNews - WinXP downgrade possible until 2020 - tech
(hx) 01:15 AM CEST - Jul,19 2010 - Post a comment / read (15)
  • Intel's new Core i7 970 six-core CPU listed  online - As expected, Intel's second hexa-core processor is starting to emerge in online listings from retailers. The new Core i7 970 will reportedly be priced around $115 lower than the range-topping Core i7 980X in the U.S. and will feature slightly toned down specs such as 3.2GHz clock speeds as well as a locked multiplier. Otherwise both chips sport the same 12MB L3 cache, are compatible with socket LGA 1366 boards and -- of course -- have six cores and twelve threads. The new Gulftown chip can be found in its boxed version from U.K. retailer Digital-Fusion for £705.52 (or around $1,090). The same site has the 980X for £801.22 ($1,230), so if the price relationship is retained for the U.S. market then its non-Extreme variant should retail for around $885.
  • Intel Pentium 4 Vs. Atom: A Battle Of The Generations - Performance-wise, there are benchmarks in which the old Pentium 4 still does well. This applies to workloads that haven’t been multi-threaded or coded to take advantage of newer instruction set enhancements, such as SSE3. All others, though, run much faster on the dual-core Atom D510, mostly thanks to its second processing core. The performance difference is glaring.
  • Microsoft extends Windows XP downgrade rights until 2020 - In an unusual move from Microsoft, the software giant announced that it will allow downgrade rights from Windows 7 to Windows XP Professional right up until 2020. Microsoft originally stated that users could downgrade to Windows XP 18 months after the debut of Windows 7, or until Windows 7 SP1, which is just around the corner. However, the company changed its mind once again, offering customers the chance to downgrade from Windows 7 to Windows XP Professional until 2020, the entire lifecycle of Windows 7.
  • Motorola's Droid X Sells Out on Day One - While Apple has been busy playing damage control on the antenna issues with its iPhone 4, Motorola has been clearing some headway of its own with the launch of the Droid X, which sold out on it's first day on the market. Keep up the fine work Motorola! On the launch of the Motorola Droid X, rumors surfaced that a chip known as 'eFuse' would brick the phone after any attempt to run custom ROMs. Motorola has stated this will not happen, but it does go into 'Recovery Mode' when booted with unauthorized software. Reinstalling the Motorola software will restore it to normal. So the phone will not become unusable, but it is quite possibly unhackable.
  • iOS 4.1 beta released, but does it fix the antenna issue? - Apple released the iOS 4.1 beta to developers today and all hopes that a software update will fix the antenna and signal issues has been lost.
  • Apple Defends iPhone Antenna, Offers Free Cases - In general, says Apple, users aren't calling AppleCare to complain, users aren't returning it in large numbers, and the data suggests that it doesn't lose any more signal strength than a number of competing products from other manufacturers (such as BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, Samsung Omnia II). Despite the evidence that suggests the iPhone 4's performance is on par with other devices, Apple wants to make all of its customers happy. First, Apple recommends that all iPhone owners update to iOS 4.0.1 to update the formula used to calculate signal strength
  • Nokia Statement Backs Apple's iPhone Defense - Nokia offered a statement to help put the iPhone 4 antenna issues into perspective. The company noted that it has invested thousands of hours studying how people use phones and has used the information learned to engineer antenna placement. Nokia said, 'Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand.' Nokia points out that antenna design is complex, and is one of its core competencies.
  • Apollo iPad Demo - Newspaper Of The Future? - Today, the company released their first application, dubbed APOLLO, for the iPad. Their lofty ambition is to become the number one daily destination of top personalized news content from around the Web, build a genuine Newspaper of the Future, and thus "deliver the final blow to the newspaper industry". The app crawls thousands of the top blogs and news sources on the Web within said categories, ranks them, and clusters related articles together.
  • RIAA paid more than $16,000,000 to recover only $391,000! - The RIAA paid Holmes Roberts & Owen $9,364,901 in 2008, Jenner & Block more than $7,000,000, and Cravath Swain & Moore $1.25 million, to pursue its "copyright infringement" claims, in order to recover a mere $391,000.
  • Theatrical Trailer for Fincher's The Social Network - The Social Network is directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker David Fincher, of superb films like Alien 3, Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button previously.
  • Early Promo Teaser for Weta Workshop's Wind in the Willows - It's only an early animated promo, while actual filming will start later this year.
  • Official Trailer for Australian Horror 'The Loved Ones' - Here's the official trailer for Sean Byrne's The Loved Ones, the cult horror audience award winner from last year's Toronto Film Fest. The film has been heralded as somewhat of a crazy new Australian cult classic in the works.
  • Boobs Galore in New Red Band Trailer for Middle Men - Paramount has debuted a very TNA-filled red band trailer for George Gallo's Middle Men, the comedy starring Luke Wilson about the origin of internet porn in the 90's. Paramount is bringing Middle Men to theaters August 6th.
  • The Expendables Call To Arms Trailer Demands - Lionsgate is bringing The Expendables (trailer) to theaters starting on August 13th later this summer. I cannot wait! :-)
  • Another Final Theatrical Trailer for Centurion - Magnolia Pictures is distributing it in the US. Centurion will hit limited theaters starting on August 27th as well as early online VOD and Xbox starting July 23rd
  • Brand New TV Spot for Avatar's Extended Re-Release - Fox has begun airing this new TV spot for the Special Edition re-release of James Cameron's Avatar, in theaters in August
  • First 2011 Buick Regal commercials plays up its German roots - Buick is now starting its full Regal ad campaign in the States and the first television spot doesn't hide the fact the Regal was honed in Germany before making its way to our shores. It certainly isn't a bad thing to brag about. And as for Buick's suggestion about creating an American Autobahn, consider our hands raised.
  • Meneo - Birth of the Santa Nalga (video) WTF? :-D - Alright, who put LSD in my coffee?!? ;-)
  • The chewing gum and helium experiment (video) - Check it out!
  • Pamela Anderson in a Bikini for PETA - Here's a computer-generated image of what Pamela Anderson might have looked like 15 years ago urging you to believe animals are just like people because PETA has to come up with crazy shit every month or they stop getting donations to pay their employees for not respecting the food chain.
  • Lindsay Lohan Sexy and Kinda Topless (video) - This sexy Lindsay Lohan topless photoshoot video for the August edition of GQ Germany shows Lindsay at really her finest in a very long time.
  • Miranda Talks Lingerie - What's better than photos of the delectable Miranda Kerr in her undies? How about a video of her modeling bras and panties?

Are they fucking dumb or what  anyway that was chump change to fuck around with lives and familes of those who got caught up in that bullshit. They probably ended up paying more in legal shit fees than what they had copied!.. that is beyond fucked up.

And who says the Lawyers and the infected authoritarianism injustice scum system aren't the pure fucking parasitic evil in the middle of the perceived battle of the good and bad.

No wonder they along with many other industries and self interest groups are into lobbying government and making corrupt morally inept law changes and policies, these corporate scumbags still haven't realized they are the stupid greedy narrow minded ones. Actually they probably do, its the idiots supporting and complacently letting it slide by who haven't once again realized the reasoning they've formed their opinions on are based on lies and manipulated data.

Get your priorities straight, more fucked things going on in this world than celebrities.

And I don't think she is fucked up given her life and the crowd she hangs around with, and look at other child hood stars coming from Disney corp. Its the media to be blamed the most who have fuck all else to do if it weren't for stalking celebrities that people are persuaded into idolizing and then tore down when they're private life is intruded on, like doing drugs because of societies retarded ignorances and support of corrupt laws once again. Americas injustice system is full of these parasites who need ways to easily criminalize people, it funds the police state. Drugs/Alcohol etc its all about the way its managed and regulated. Instead its mismanaged on purpose with lots of lies and institutions that can benefit from those who fall into its created pitfalls.

Anyway Lindsay sent the right message out to the scumbag judge her sentenced her recently. I think it was 'Fuck U' LOL :D Judges are cretinous overpaid parasite assholes anyway.

It's a sick uncivilized society we still live in really.

My priorities are right where I want them, who the fuck are you to tell me what my priorities should be? Fuck you.

She is fucked up, not saying she isn't a good actor. She is a decent actor but she's been given countless chances to clean up her life and she can't. She's considered a role model to some kids and her image has been slammed across every news headline around because she causes shit everywhere she goes. 3/4 of the time she acts like an immature brat. She needs time in the slammer to hopefully get her marbles straightened out. As for the vid, she looks freakingly gross and then she's a lesbian so who cares.

darknothing(08:36 PM CEST - Jul,19 2010 )
let the bitch die, who gives a fuck about her,

Sabot(09:16 PM CEST - Jul,19 2010 )
You can downgrade to windows to XP pro, sums up the fact that MORE people/offices aint leaving XP -carrot= buy win7 and you can go back to xp if you want BUT your stuck with no refund for 7.. A$$holes.

PoliticalMaestro(11:07 PM CEST - Jul,19 2010 )
Watched the Centurion film a month ago at the Cinema its worth seeing. Decent plot and cast (except the twat from Dr Who that plays the Nambian more like Noobian, sounded like an East End cockney prat). In all its has nice gore, action, story, atmospherics and credible acting in scenic England.

Tom(11:31 PM CEST - Jul,19 2010 )
Seriously, only a clueless fuck or a company with dumb ass administrator/IT personnel would want to downgrade from Win7.

Baconnaise(12:28 AM CEST - Jul,20 2010 )
Tom> Seriously, only a clueless fuck or a company with dumb ass administrator/IT personnel would want to downgrade from Win7.

I don't see how it's clueless or dumb if they had their budget cut and lost staff on top of that. Most of everything at where I work is still XP and 2k. The company let go a whole floor of people and little pocket here and there in the past five years. It must make sense to someone since they are concerned with the bottom line and profit.

Koogle(03:02 AM CEST - Jul,20 2010 )
Seriously, only a clueless dumb fuck or a company with dumb ass administrator/IT personnel would want to waste money getting downgraded to Win7 only to upgrade to the better and less stupid XP.

Amended that for you Tom aka just another stupid dumb fuck. The only reason IT often go for Win7 is because they are too stupid to learn anything else from what they've been trained on. Like replacing that DummIEs browser with the much better firefox.

As for Lohan jeeesh your biased opinions made up from her media exposed life is even more stupid (she ain't perfect but neither are you for being judgmental of her life when really you don't even have a clue). And just goes to show you are just another apathetic idiot who just doesn't get how the media works in building celebrities up, following them everywhere, only to bring them down to make their hypocritical points they want there mass audience being distracted with. Quite frankly I couldn't give a shit about USA's stupid laws on drugs alcohol driving etc, she fumbled up, like many many others, but their entire injustice system is built on illegal and stupid legislation to make wealthy the cretins who work for it.

and productivity, because any corporation forcing its drone force to use ill conceived and development junk like vis7a and its crap explorer needs their head sorting out.

XPsp3 is will be around for a while yet, Vis7a is nothing more than WinME, with 7 being WinME secondary edition.

Koogle(03:09 AM CEST - Jul,20 2010 )

I don't see XP having as much support as it still gets past 2012 (which is still another 2years away or at least until Win8 hopefully its less shit changes! but it really becomes a case of what a person uses the computer for, majority of desktops apps will continue to work including browsers, it will still get certain third party updates. Whatever happens XP will still be more popular and have more users than Linux by 2020 tongue.gif... nah I'm just kidding that would be fucking terrible if Linux doesn't start making some major leaps by next year.

And you can still enjoy brand new hardware on XPsp3/64 all the mainstream hardware developers put drivers out, ok maybe less so with xp64, but again it really depends on the hardware, XPsp3 32bit still outperforms Win7 in many things aswel as a less shit explorer shell, but with only 3gb available it would be a waste of a 4gb+comp, unless you really like a large ramdrive. And most who complain about drivers just didn't bother to look into things. And you can't compare win95 10+years on, it was replaced by win98/se on mass much quicker due to it being much better and stable. The fact is the market is stagnating due to poor innovation and real worthwhile improvements. MS have far more stiffer competition, XP is still that stiff competition with the market it has, as much as they have tried to market win7 as its better replacement lol... majority of stuff developed for XP inbetween that time of vista's development where MS majorly fucked up, is still being developed to work on XP, and even if it wasn't, new isn't always better, plenty people still use older production/etc software years later.

Otherwise Vista could have been the Win98 to Win95 instead it was more like the WinME resembling some junk that failed to do anything better, Win7 must be like the Windows Millennium Secondary Edition. Which has to mean that Win8 must be better or just worse as they continue to push out the noob consumer shit they want you to be using. No idea yet, but I still don't see myself bothering with Win7 until maybe later this year.

quote:
The only difference is that Win7 needs to use up more CPU to do the same things only crapper and slower than XP did with need for less CPU. Just bad on so many fronts, introduced things that haven't been fully developed or provide much use. Its like only now is IE9 coming out with GPU acceleration that has been tied to DX10/11 with Direct2d etc which imo will be inevitably fuck up and make slower other things in a trade off, for those who use other applications that have uses for the GPU. What is brain dead stupid is that Mozillatard corp have decided to nativity go with excluding a a far bigger OS Linux/XP/OSX market in favour of developing GPU accelerating using the same shitty APi that MS have sly infested within its Vis7a junk. Completely ignoing the fact their browser is also used on other platforms where GPU browser acceleration could have been provided with OpenGL etc, only Winshite7 has piss poor support for that.

Just a whole lot of FAIL going on really...

-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay-gqx18UTM

Actual noticeable user benefits so far? fuck all, they couldn't even be arsed to update the services.msc window size, still has to be fucking resized, and forgets last closed settings, moron development among so many other things... evolutionary pfff, Win7 is just slow for those who like to work fast and multitask alot.

It needs a more modern cpu with lots of cores and lots of ram, so you don't notice all the extra wastage and processes that do fuck all to really make any improvement over XP, complete waste really. I guess its just a good thing I didn't make those vids, could really have made Win7 look like a pile of stinking shit.

quote:
Windows XP was released on August 24, 2001. So it is almost 9 years old.

So practically 10years and still getting support for majority of peripheral hardware (which is really where lack of drivers issues crop up), heck even games are still getting dx9 support as its still a big market. Win95 barely made 5years before it was ignored in favour of Win98/2000 in drivers/software support. And no I don't see XP still getting much support in another 5years..

Though Vista is more abandoned than XP! So that was barely 2years if you think about, seeing as most its core fanboy audience was desperate to be using Vis7a even it was beta/rtm, even I considered those still be better marginally better than shitty Vista itself.

Which says a lot about what MS is upto here, trying to move into more regular upgrade cycles and providing marginally improved updates but mostly crap marketable noob feature enhancements that any third party/lone developer could do a better job of making and already do. They only put out some underhood core improvements that leave plenty of room for improvement. And DX10/11 could have been made to work with XP, it would be even more popular with a more lasting future. Instead MS found other ways that provided them with the excuse that they couldn't have possibly have done that... bullshit wink.gif Such as the WPF/DWM along with the poor WDDM all of which have been half assed implementations, that should have been kept back until fully developed.. instead they'll just do a vista > win7 and win8, where it all finally might have come together properly. Only by that time they'll have some other crap changes to make and break other things.

Baconnaise(05:22 PM CEST - Jul,20 2010 )
I'm pretty sure we still have xp and 2k due to the lease agreements. We also have some internal audit software and mis ticketing software that might require a few changes.

Vista and Win7 don't run everything that XP can perfectly. I've had trouble from older games that vista and win7 just won't play nice with but work perfectly on xp.

Tom(05:32 PM CEST - Jul,20 2010 )
Can you give a few examples, because I can even run Duke 3D without issue.

@ Koogle. Bud, I don't give a shit what you say as do probably 95% of the people here. All you do is whine and complain like a spoiled 10 year old. I don't even remember one positive thing you have ever said here. Go crawl back under your rock and go back to sucking your thumb.

Baconnaise(02:29 AM CEST - Jul,21 2010 )
Smaller games from popcap and bigfish etc. Vista and Win7 have issues with full screen mode, cursors, and other various little quirks despite any compat changes you can make.

Tom(06:28 PM CEST - Jul,21 2010 )
I'm playing Bejeweled without issue and I have another one I haven't touched in months, damn, can't remember the name but it works. Both are Popcap games. I imagine you are using the latest versions. About the only thing I have not been able to run is Rise of the Triad though I haven't given up yet. There is a GL wrapper or a change using some nvTools that apparently fixes it I just never got back to that. Asking for an OS to go back to Win95 days to me is absurd. Run a VM and play them through that.

Baconnaise(07:11 PM CEST - Jul,21 2010 )
I'm not worried about it as I already switched out the htpc and the kids can either play in windowed mode or play their flash games instead. If it screwed up my Bejeweled 2 Deluxe and Bejeweled Blitz my wife would complain and even I would be annoyed.
