TechNews - Windows 10 Threshold 2 in November - tech
(hx) 12:28 AM CEST - Sep,07 2015 - Post a comment
  • Windows 10 Threshold 2 rumored to launch in November - The update was previously scheduled for an October release date, but now this may have shifted to a later date, possibly in November. Keeping in mind that this gives Microsoft more time to work on optimization and other new features, the news isn't all that bad. Another interesting thing revealed is that Threshold 2 is internally being called "Windows 10 Update for November" or "Windows 10 November Update" but whether any of this name ends up being final is not confirmed, as of yet. Another possibility would be Microsoft not giving the update a specific name but releasing it as a general update. Windows Insiders have been using Threshold 2 builds for quite some time now and we know that the update will largely work on optimization, but will also tow along some new features such as extensions for Microsoft Edge, and possibly a universal Messaging app for the desktop.
  • Intel: Criminals getting better at data exfiltration - Enterprises tend to be highly focused on keeping attackers out of their systems, but most of the actual damage happens not when the bad guys first break in, but when they're able to successfully steal data -- and the techniques they're using to do this are getting steadily more sophisticated. One of the ways that attackers evade detection is to disguize the data before sending it out, according to a new report from Intel Security. For example, if a company's employees post pictures to Twitter, attackers can embed data into images so that the image still looks normal to the human eye, and attach the image to an otherwise harmless-sounding Twitter post. Gmail can also be used to smuggle data out, especially when the traffic is encrypted, he added. Another way attackers are using to hide their behavior is to leverage processors not normally monitored for suspicious activity -- like graphics processors.
  • Skype Overhauls Android and iOS Mobile Apps - Skype has released Skype Version 6.0 for Android and iOS, which completely redesigns the apps to make them more natural and intuitive. Skype 6.0 for Android tackles Material Design to give it a more native look; adds a floating action button for starting new conversations/calls; upgrades contacts search; and speeds up inbox management thanks to clearer read/unread indicators. Skype 6.0 for the iPhone and iPad has also been given a visual overhaul, which includes new swiping gestures to make calls and answer messages. Skype improved contact search for the iPhone/iPad app, as well. Last the iPad version of Skype now has all the features found on the iPhone version, including the new messaging function, large emoticons, and group chats. Skype 6.0 for Android and for iOS is free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store, respectively.
  • Chrome 45 brings faster performance - n Chrome 45, Google has implemented a new garbage collection system that attempts to clean up unused memory in idle tabs. This new system reduces RAM usage by around 10% on average, but Google saw even greater reductions (up to 25%) in complex web apps such as Gmail. Google also wants to make opening Chrome a much faster experience, and they're achieving this by prioritizing the restoration of your most recently viewed tabs after you launch the browser. Only users who have set their browser to "continue where you left off" will see these improvements, but it should make the process of returning to browsing much faster.
  • Google's latest Easter egg is a fun - Simply querying the phrase 'fun facts' or 'I'm feeling curious' will return a random piece of trivia. Examples I received include information regarding which U.S. presidents lived in a log cabin, why you hear the sound of the ocean in a seashell and clarifying if balsa is a hardwood or softwood (it's the latter, in case you were wondering). Preceding each fact is a large blue button that generates another random bit of information.
  • Google Has A New Logo - First there was that whole Alphabet announcement last month, now this logo change.
  • Amazon Video Now Offers Offline Playback - Want another great reason to have Amazon Prime?. Amazon today said Prime customers can now download videos for offline playback. The feature, part of Amazon Prime Instant Video, is compatible with Fire tablets, the Fire Phone, Android phones and tablets, and iOS devices, such as the iPhone. Amazon is offering an unknown percentage of its video library for offline playback, including televisions shows, classic movies, and newer cinematic releases. Not all videos are available for download/offline playback; compatible videos will be marked as such. Prime subscribers can download the video file via WiFi and will have between 15 to 30 days to watch the video (varies by title) before the viewing period ends. Offline viewing is only available to residents of the U.S.
  • The next iPhone could arrive with 3D Touch Display - According to 9to5Mac, the "Force Touch" display will be officially dubbed a "3D Touch Display". The "3D Touch Display" moniker will come from the three dimensions of pressure the new iPhone display will respond to. While users of the Apple Watch and MacBook will be familiar with two levels of pressure, the new display will offer a third level of sensitivity that will be unique to the iPhone. Naturally, this will offer a new dynamic to the iPhones interface which should be integrated fairly well into iOS 9. For event coverage, be sure to check back on September 9th, as we will be covering all the latest from Apple's September event.
  • Sony Reveals the Xperia Z5 In Small and Large Sizes with 4K Display - Sony has announced the Xperia Z5, its flagship smartphone, which features a 4k display. The handset relies on the same slim metal design from pervious generations of Xperia Z devices with glass on the front and back surfaces. The phone is waterproof and protects the handset from accidental spills. The Xperia Z5 features what Sony says is "the best camera" it has ever put in a phone by speeding up autofocus to 0.03 seconds, while also improving the pixel count to 23 million. The camera features Sony's G-Lens and uses "clear image zoom" to power 5x zooming with no loss in clarity. The camera also performs well at night and in low light thanks to a new night capture mode powered by the XMOR sensor. Last, video includes steady shot intelligent shake reduction. Sony added a fingerprint sensor to the screen lock button, which is positioned on the right edge. The phone will be offered in a 4.7-inch screen size with all the same features. The Z5 Premium has a 5.5-inch 4K display (with upscaling for full HD content). Sony didn't immediate say when the Z5 Premium and Z5 Compact will go on sale. Both handsets run Android.
