- Google Chromebook, powered by MediaTek, is demoed at Computex
- The
Chromebook is running the 64-bit MT8173 SoC, which is based on
ARM's big.LITTLE technology and packs a set of more power-efficient
Cortex-A53 cores and a set of extremely powerful Cortex-A72 cores.
- Computex Microsoft Forum 2015 Product - In the video
--uploaded by a Computex attendee -- the tablet
can be seen at the 7:38 mark but the entire video is worth viewing.
The 9-inch tablet is said to come with a keyboard as well as a stylus
and a special arrangement to carry while taking notes. According to
Windows Central, Microsoft was quick to take the device off the stage
once the demo concluded.
- New York Regulator Issues Final Virtual Currency Rules - FYI,
New York state issued on Wednesday extensive
new rules for companies that operate in virtual currencies such as
bitcoin but did little to accommodate complaints that overly tight
regulation could hamper the nascent industry. The new rules, the first
by a state, create comprehensive guidelines for regulating digital
currency firms, according to the state's Department of Financial
Services, which developed the regulations.
- Windows 10 launches on July 29; registrations for free copies
- Microsoft has announced Windows 10
will be available starting on July 29. Windows 10 will be offered
as a free upgrade for those who own Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, as long
as they didn't pirate their copy of Microsoft's operating system. For
those who plan on downloading Windows 10 as soon as it becomes
available to them, Microsoft has released a new taskbar app that should
be available for those eligible for the upgrade. All you have to do is
click on Windows icon, input your email address, and you'll be prompted
when Windows 10 is available to download.
- Windows 10 Home users may not be able to opt out of Automatic
-
On July 29, users of Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium and
those on the non Pro version of Windows 8.1 will be able to upgrade to
Windows 10 Home for free. The interesting language in the specifications page for this upgrade path is also
the bit where it
mentions updates. "Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows
Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10
Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates."
- How to remove 'Download Windows 10' icon on Windows 7 - Microsoft
has slipped adware prompting users to upgrade to Windows 10 into Windows
Update, which for some was marked as important. It's an icon in the
taskbar, which has a menu of four options related to the offer and no
option for removing it. The file that runs this is, in my case,
"C:Windowssystem32GWXGWX.exe".
- Skype leveraged to distribute adware - Researchers with PhishMe
have identified and assisted in disrupting a campaign in which
Skype was being leveraged to distribute adware. The threat was
initially discovered when a PhishMe researcher was alerted on Skype
that a user was attempting to call them, according to a Wednesday post.
The user's name: "NEW VIDEO MESSAGE RECEIVED! VIEW AT
WWW.VIEWROR[dot]COM." Upon clicking the link, a voice tells the
recipient to click a download link in order to install a proprietary
video player needed to play the alleged video message. Once downloaded
and opened, the executable asks to run as administrator, and the user
is then presented with a screen to install many different components –
all of which are adware.
- String of characters can crash your Skype app for good - Users
have discovered that receiving a message with the characters
"http://:", without the quotes, renders many of Skype's apps unusable,
as they instantly crash. What's worse is that once that message is in
your chat history, the apps will crash continuously upon restarting. So
far it looks like the desktop version of Skype as well as iOS and
Android clients are vulnerable to this bug, while the Modern Windows
app and the Mac OS X clients are unaffected. Unfortunately there
doesn't seem to be any easy fix to this. The only workaround seems to
be quite convoluted, as the sender has to delete the message with the
characters, and then the receiver needs to install an older version of
Skype. However, it's not clear whether this actually works.
- Netflix Starts Testing Pre-Roll Ads? - Last week some
users noticed that Netflix was running post-roll ads
after shows ended. At that time everyone who was affected was using an
Xbox One to watch Netflix. Now we are receiving reports that Netflix is
testing ads before shows start, and we are hearing from Netflix
subscribers on other devices, including Roku and Tivo. Netflix released
the following statement: "We are always testing new things via the
service, many of which never see a rollout. We have nothing more to add
at this point." Some users are reporting that they are able to skip the
ads, while others say they could not; some users are reporting 20
second ads, and others are seeing longer ads; however, all reports say
the ads are for Netflix shows. Clearly Netflix is looking for
subscriber feedback by testing ads. Based on what we've heard, they are
trying a variety of ad formats to find the best fit for the service.
Since Netflix has made the ad testing public by testing on the general
subscriber base, it appears they are very serious about implementing
ads in some format. Later today, the CEO of Netflix Reed Hastings just
posted on his personal Facebook
account that there will be no ads on Netflix but he added "Just
adding
relevant cool trailers for other Netflix content you are likely to
love." So here is the question is a unskippable "trailer" that you did
not ask to see a ad or just a " trailer"? ;-)
