- Virtual Retinal Display (VRD) beams images onto your eyeballs
- Everyone seems to be pretty excited about the Oculus Rift VR
headset. The folks at Avegant are working on an even more intriguing
head-mounted display. Dubbed the Virtual Retinal
Display, the headset eschews LCD screens in favor of a micro-mirror
array that beams reflected light directly into the eyes. The current
prototype offers a resolution of 1280x800 per eye, but the perceived
resolution is supposedly much higher.
- Microsoft releases special Walking Dead TV commercial for
Windows - The clip continues the storyline from the two previous
Walking Dead ads, with the young couple who got together thanks to
the show and their use of Windows 8. The new commercial shows that the
two love-birds are moving in together, with the man using a Lenovo Yoga
notebook-tablet PC, running Windows 8.1, to Skype his girlfriend. He
walks down to the basement carrying a storage box but then trips and
falls to the bottom of the stairs. He then sees what he thinks is a
zombie coming to eat him, and freaks out, but it turns out it's just a
cardboard cut-out. His girlfriend, naturally, appears at the top of the
stairs and takes a picture of this funny moment with her Nokia Lumia
1020 Windows Phone.
- Fujitsu to launch "Arrows F-02F" tablet with 10.1-inch display
- Fujitsu has come up with a
new waterproof 10.1-inch tablet named Arrows Tabs F-02F in Japan
with NTT DoCoMo. The tablet is equipped with LTE 4.2 and comes with a
quad-core 2.2 GHz (MSM8974) processor and 2 GB RAM. The internal memory
of the slate is 64 GB but can be increased with the help of Micro SD
card. Other features include 1.3 MP camera, NFC, 1Seg TV tuner, and
Bluetooth 4.0. The tablet sports a WQXGA 10.1 inch LCD display with a
resolution of 2560×1600 pixels with a "Xevic" video engine. The rugged
tablet is water and dust proof with a rating of IPX5/8 and IP5X
respectively. The massive 9600mAh battery along with other power saving
features gives the tablet enough juice to power it for 1450 hours in
LTE, about 1500 hours in 3G, about 1250 hours in GSM. Another nifty
feature of the tablets is the fingerprint sensor mounted on the front
of the tablet. Along with basic authentication unlock feature, the
fingerprint sensor can be assigned to different profiles and be used to
switch between adult and child mode. The Fujitsu F-02F tablet will be
available for ~$200 approx on contract basis and will hit the market
shelves by mid-December.
- Samsung Announces the Galaxy Round with Curved Display - Samsung
today revealed the
Galaxy Round, an Android smartphone that features a curved display.
The Galaxy Round has a 5.7-inch full HD screen that has a slight curve
from side-to-side, which makes the device somewhat easier to hold
compared to traditional flat smartphones. The Galaxy Round has software
features, called Roll Effect and Ground Effect, that take advantage of
the curved shape to display information such as missed calls, battery
life, and the time/date when the device is tilted on a flat surface.
The Galaxy Round's screen may share dimensions with the Note 3, but the
device itself is lighter than the Note 3 at 5.43 ounces. It runs
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Samsung's customized software, including S
Voice, S Health, Story Album, and other apps. The Galaxy Round is
powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 3GB of
RAM. It comes with 32GB of built-in storage and supports microSD cards
up to 64GB. The main camera rates 13 megapixels and the user-facing
camera rates 2 megapixels. Both can capture 1080p HD video.
Connectivity options includes GSM/HSPA+/LTE, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac,
Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, USB 3.0, GPS/GLONASS, and NFC. The Round is
7.9mm thick and packs a 2,800mAh battery. Korea's SK Telecom will be
the first operator to offer the Galaxy Round, which goes on sale
tomorrow for about $1,000. Samsung did not immediately announce plans
to sell the device in the U.S.
- Leaked video of Nexus 5 prototype - The 7-minute
video that was uploaded on YouTube shows a Nexus 5 prototype device
which lacks the Nexus branding at the back. The date on the lockscreen
shows October 9th, and the video itself highlights the device hardware
from all angles and offers the clearest view of the Nexus 5 yet.
- Early Demand for iPhone 5C Vastly Over-Estimated? - Before
the launch of the colorful iPhone 5C, KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo estimated
that Apple would ship approximately 17 million units in September. The
early figures are in and they're several million shy of that estimate.
In fact, Kuo is now saying that Apple
shipped "only" 11.4 million iPhone 5C handsets last month.
That's still nothing to sneeze at, to be sure, but it does mean that
Apple and its retail partners may have been a little overly optimistic
about the appeal of the plastic iPhone 5C. Indeed, Kuo is also saying
that sales will be lower than his original estimate for the December
quarter, falling down to "just" 10.4 million. Again, this is hardly an
insignificant figure, but it is 10% lower than what early estimates had
it pegged at.
What's interesting is that while the flagship iPhone 5S hasn't really
received much in terms of advertising, it's the one that is
experiencing the shortage of stock. Meanwhile, you can waltz into just
about any Apple Store and happily snatch a iPhone 5C off the shelf… and
it's the iPhone 5C that has been receiving much of the marketing push.
- LG Announces G Pro Lite with 5.5-Inch Screen - LG has
announced the G Pro Lite,
a low-cost, big-screen Android smartphone that competes with the
Samsung Galaxy Mega. The G Pro Lite features a 5.5-inch qHD display and
a dual-core 1GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage.
The G Pro Lite comes with a stylus that is embedded in the phone and a
large 3,140mAh battery. It has an 8-megapixel main camera and a
1.3-megapixel user-facing camera. Wireless networking speeds are
limited to HSPA, and it also comes with Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, and GPS.
According to LG, the G Pro Lite includes many of the user interface
features seen on the G2, such as KnockOn for waking the screen,
QuickMemo, and QTranslator. The LG G Pro Lite is headed to Latin
American markets first, followed by others in Asia, Russia, China,
India, and the Middle East. LG did not announce plans to bring the G
Pro Lite to the U.S.
- T-Mobile Says LTE Available Nationwide - T-Mobile today
said that LTE
4G can be accessed by 202 million people in 233 markets around the
U.S., including 91 of the top 100 metro areas
- Nikon rolls out their 24.3-meagpixel D610 DSLR - The
D610 is a 24.3-meagpixel DSLR that used Nikon's EXPEED 3 imaging
engine that's designed to work well with wide tonal ranges as well as
speed up transfer to the memory card. ISO options range from 100 to
25,600. Other features include a 39-point auto focus, smarter scene
recognition, a new Quiet Continuous Shutter mode a 3.2-inch LCD,
100-percent optical viewfinder and much more. Nikon's put quite a bit
of their core technologies into the D610 model to ensure that
professionals have optimum settings to work with. Underlying features
like Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II 2016 pixel RGB Sensor will
help enhance image capture and perhaps bring the very best out of the
photos. This is a step up form the previous editions naturally and with
a price tag of $1999.95 for just the body, one would expect nothing but
the best. Masahiro Horie Nikon's Director of Marketing and Planning is
of the opinion that the D610's full frame sensor, expanded
depth-of-field control, wide dynamic range, high image quality, low
noise, fine color, and low-light capability will deliver just the right
kind of sharpness and fidelity to your photos.
- HTC's Next Smartphone May Include Fingerprint Sensor - HTC
is one week away from announcing a new smartphone that has a
fingerprint sensor, according to the Wall Street Journal. Citing
sources familiar with the company's plans, HTC will debut a device
called the HTC One Max, a larger version of the HTC One, on October 15.
Apple's iPhone 5s is the only other major smartphone to include a
fingerprint sensor. In addition to the fingerprint sensor, the One Max
will have a 5.9-inch display and an Ultrapixel camera, as well as Sense
5 features such as Blinkfeed. The One Max, like the One and One mini,
will run Google's Android operating system. HTC did not confirm any of
the details in the Journal's report.
- Tactile Rendering of 3D Features on Touch Surfaces - In this
project, we develop and apply a tactile rendering algorithm to
simulate rich 3D geometric features (such as bumps, ridges, edges,
protrusions, texture etc.) on touch screen surfaces. The underlying
hypothesis is that when a finger slides on an object then minute
surface variations are sensed by friction-sensitive mechanoreceptors in
the skin. Thus, modulating the friction forces between the fingertip
and the touch surface would create illusion of surface variations. We
propose that the perception of a 3D "bump" is created when local
gradients of the virtual bump are mapped to lateral friction forces.
- Ford demonstrates fully autonomous self parking car technology
- Parallel parking still remains to be the most challenging part
of driving a vehicle for many and they absolutely dread the idea of
parking their vehicles in tight spots. Though many high-end cars offer
assisted parking technology and it has been with us for quite some time
now, but auto-shows frequently demo the real life usability of park
assist systems and mock their failures under test. We feel the
technology still needs some fine-tuning, but Ford in a fresh attempt
has demoed their newly developed completely autonomous self parking
technology. Ford touts the system to be so advanced and foolproof
that the driver can actually step out of the vehicle and park the
car using just a smartphone with the help of an app. The car will
automatically search for an optimum spot and notify the driver!
- Mercedes-Benz TV: Autonomous long-distance drive - The video
posted by Mercedes goes on to show how close we are to seeing this
long time dream come true. Vehicles have more or less remained the same
ever since they were invented but this addition will be a huge leap
forward. Though most of us consider driving as pleasure and not a mere
necessity, but cases of accidents due to negligent driving are only
growing making the need of driverless cars pretty compelling. Engineers
at Mercedes are trying to factor every possible angle to make the
system foolproof. We might get to witness this technology built into
cars as early as 2020.
- Small cubes that self-assemble -Car Painted With Heat
Sensitive Paint - Known
as M-Blocks, the robots are cubes with no external moving parts.
Nonetheless, they're able to climb over and around one another, leap
through the air, roll across the ground, and even move while suspended
upside down from metallic surfaces. Inside each M-Block is a flywheel
that can reach speeds of 20,000 revolutions per minute; when the
flywheel is braked, it imparts its angular momentum to the cube. On
each edge of an M-Block, and on every face, are cleverly arranged
permanent magnets that allow any two cubes to attach to each other.
- Car Painted With Heat Sensitive Paint - Even though I'd
never do something like this to my car, the effect
is pretty damn neat

- Even Chuck Norris Might Be Terrified After Seeing This Prank!
- You might have heard that the remake of the movie Carrie has
been scheduled to hit theatres on the 18th of this month. What we have
for you here is a publicity stunt for the upcoming movie. It's an
awesome prank which involves a girl with telekinetic powers freaking
out in a coffee shop - terrifying the patrons in the process. In
the prank, the girl starts using her telekinetic powers after getting
angry with a stranger who knocks over her drink. Both the girl and the
stranger are, of course, actors and there are others who are sitting in
the cafe who are also in on the act. Fake walls, hidden pulleys, tables
which can be controlled remotely, and spring-loaded book shelves are
all being used in the prank, and the effect created by these things is
pretty awesome, and you can see that in the faces of the unsuspecting
customers in the cafe.
